Chapter 1
The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Chapter 1 β The First Rule
Elena opened her eyes.
For a few seconds, she didn't move.
She stared at the ceiling above her.
It was white.
Perfectly white.
There were no cracks, no stains, no light fixtures. Just a smooth, blank surface that seemed to stretch endlessly above her.
She blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Her head hurt.
Not like a normal headache. It felt deeper, almost as if someone had placed a heavy stone behind her eyes.
She slowly lifted her hand to her forehead.
βWhere am I?β
Her voice sounded strange in the room.
Too loud.
The sound bounced against the walls and returned to her like a whisper.
She sat up.
The mattress beneath her was thin and uncomfortable. There was no pillow. No blanket. No furniture except for a small metal table positioned about two meters away.
On the table sat an old black radio.
Elena stared at it.
She couldn't explain why, but something about the radio frightened her.
She looked around.
Four walls.
One door.
No windows.
No clock.
No camera that she could see.
She stood.
Her legs felt weak.
She took three careful steps toward the door.
The floor was cold beneath her bare feet.
She reached for the handle.
She pulled.
Nothing.
She tried again.
Harder.
Still nothing.
βHello?β
No response.
She knocked.
βIs anyone there?β
Silence.
Elena pressed her ear against the metal.
Nothing.
Not footsteps.
Not voices.
Not even the sound of a machine.
She stepped back.
Her breathing became faster.
βOkay.β
She forced herself to speak calmly.
βOkay, Elena. Think.β
She closed her eyes.
βMy name is Elena.β
That was true.
She was twenty-one.
She lived in Westbridge.
Her mother's name was Clara.
Her younger brother was Daniel.
She liked coffee without sugar.
She hated thunderstorms.
She loved blue.
She remembered going to university.
She remembered her bedroom.
She remembered her mother's voice.
She remembered Daniel laughing.
Then she stopped.
What had she done yesterday?
Elena frowned.
Nothing.
She couldn't remember.
What had she done the day before?
Nothing.
Last week?
Nothing.
Her heart began beating faster.
She tried harder.
She imagined her apartment.
The blue curtains.
The bookshelf beside her bed.
A photograph of Daniel sitting on her desk.
She could see everything.
But she couldn't remember the last time she had seen any of it.
βWhy can't I remember?β
Her voice trembled.
She turned toward the radio.
The old device sat silently on the table.
She walked toward it.
There was no power cable.
No batteries.
Nothing connecting it to anything.
Elena reached out.
Her finger touched the radio.
Click.
She jumped.
Static exploded from the speaker.
She pulled her hand away.
A man's voice came through.
βGood morning, Elena.β
She froze.
The voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
Elena stared at the radio.
βWho are you?β
A short silence.
Then the man laughed softly.
βThat isn't the first question you should ask.β
Elena stepped away.
βHow do you know my name?β
βI know much more than your name.β
βWhere am I?β
βThat's a better question.β
βWhere am I?β
βYou're exactly where you asked to be.β
Elena stared at the radio.
βI never asked to be here.β
The voice remained calm.
βYou don't remember asking.β
βI would remember something like this.β
βWould you?β
Elena swallowed.
βLet me out.β
βYou can leave.β
She looked at the locked door.
βYou're lying.β
βNo.β
βThen open the door.β
βI can't.β
βWhy?β
βBecause you haven't completed the first test.β
βWhat test?β
The radio clicked.
A small screen above the door suddenly came alive.
Red numbers appeared.
03:00:00
Elena stared at them.
The countdown began.
02:59:59
02:59:58
Her stomach dropped.
βWhat happens when it reaches zero?β
The man's voice became quieter.
βYou remember.β
βRemember what?β
βWhy you're here.β
Elena looked at the screen.
02:59:40
βWho are you?β
βYou'll know soon.β
βWhat do you want?β
βI want you to remember.β
βWhy?β
βBecause you asked me to make you forget.β
The radio went silent.
Elena didn't move.
Her mind struggled to understand the sentence.
Make you forget.
She looked at the walls.
βNo.β
Her voice was barely audible.
βI didn't.β
The radio remained silent.
Elena suddenly noticed something scratched into the wall beside the door.
She stepped closer.
Four words.
YOU ASKED ME TO FORGET.
Her heart stopped.
She touched the writing.
The scratches were deep.
Fresh.
Someone had carved them into the wall.
Below them was another sentence.
Smaller.
More disturbing.
Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.
It was hers.
DON'T TRUST ELENA.
She stepped backward.
βNo.β
She stared at the words.
βThat's impossible.β
She looked at her hands.
They were shaking.
She knew her own handwriting.
She had written hundreds of pages of notes at university.
She knew the shape of every letter.
The message was hers.
But why would she write:
Don't trust Elena?
She turned toward the radio.
βYou did this.β
No response.
βYou wrote that.β
Silence.
βYou want me to think I'm crazy.β
The radio clicked.
The voice returned.
βI don't want you to think anything.β
βThen what do you want?β
βI want you to choose.β
βChoose what?β
βTruth or memory.β
A second screen appeared beside the first.
Two buttons.
TRUTH
MEMORY
Elena stared at them.
βWhat happens if I choose memory?β
βYou'll see something you forgot.β
βAnd truth?β
βYou'll see something you don't want to believe.β
She hesitated.
βHow do I know either one is real?β
The voice laughed.
βYou don't.β
Elena stared at the two buttons.
The countdown continued.
02:47:12
She pressed MEMORY.
The screen went black.
Then a photograph appeared.
Elena stared.
It showed her family.
Her mother stood outside their old house.
Daniel stood beside her.
And Elena stood on the other side.
They were smiling.
It looked like an ordinary family photograph.
Except there was someone behind them.
A man.
His face had been scratched away.
Elena leaned closer.
She didn't recognize him.
She turned the photograph over.
Written on the back were five words.
ONE OF THEM IS LYING.
Elena's breathing stopped.
The radio spoke.
βWho?β
She looked at the photograph.
βMy mother?β
βNo.β
βDaniel?β
βNo.β
βMe?β
Silence.
Elena felt cold.
βYou're saying one of us lied?β
βI didn't say that.β
βThe photograph says it.β
βPhotographs don't speak.β
βThen what does it mean?β
βYou tell me.β
Elena stared at the photograph again.
Something about it bothered her.
Daniel's smile looked forced.
Her mother looked nervous.
And Elenaβ
Elena looked terrified.
She had never noticed that before.
She moved closer.
There was something behind her own shoulder.
A red mark.
Like blood.
She dropped the photograph.
βNo.β
A memory flashed.
A dark hallway.
Daniel standing in front of her.
He was crying.
βElena, promise me.β
She heard his voice clearly.
βPromise me you won't tell anyone.β
The memory vanished.
Elena grabbed the table.
Her knees nearly gave way.
βDaniel.β
The radio remained silent.
βWhat was he afraid of?β
No answer.
βTell me!β
The voice finally came.
βYou already know.β
βI don't.β
βYou just remembered.β
Elena closed her eyes.
Another memory came.
A red door.
Rain hitting a window.
Broken glass.
Daniel shouting.
Someone else screaming.
Thenβ
Nothing.
Elena opened her eyes.
She was breathing heavily.
βWho was there?β
The voice answered:
βYou were.β
She shook her head.
βNo.β
βYes.β
βI don't remember.β
βThat's why you're here.β
Elena walked back to the wall.
She looked at the words again.
YOU ASKED ME TO FORGET.
βDid I ask you?β
βYes.β
βWhy?β
The voice didn't answer.
βWhy did I ask you?β
βBecause you were afraid.β
βOf what?β
βOf yourself.β
Elena felt a chill run down her spine.
She stepped toward the door.
βI want to leave.β
βThen find the key.β
βWhere is it?β
βSomewhere you hid it.β
She searched the room again.
Under the mattress.
Nothing.
Behind the table.
Nothing.
Inside the radio.
Nothing.
She examined the walls.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a small crack beneath the table.
She crouched.
There was something inside.
A photograph.
Elena pulled it out.
Another picture.
This one showed Daniel.
He was standing alone.
Behind him was a hospital.
Elena stared at his face.
He looked frightened.
On the back was a message.
HE KNEW BEFORE YOU DID.
Elena whispered:
βKnew what?β
The radio clicked.
The voice answered:
βWho you really were.β
She threw the photograph away.
βStop!β
βWhy?β
βBecause you keep saying things without explaining them.β
βBecause explanations are dangerous.β
βWhy?β
βBecause once you understand the truth, you can't pretend you don't.β
Elena looked at the countdown.
02:12:34
More than two hours remained.
It felt like seconds.
She sat on the floor.
Her mind was racing.
Daniel.
Her mother.
The mysterious man.
The red door.
The blood.
The message.
And her own handwriting.
She tried to remember the last time she had seen Daniel.
Nothing.
She tried to remember his voice.
She could.
She tried to remember his face.
She could.
She tried to remember his birthday.
She could.
But when she tried to remember the last conversation they hadβ
Pain.
A sharp burst behind her eyes.
She cried out.
The room blurred.
Then a voice whispered inside her head.
Not the radio.
Her own voice.
Don't tell him.
Elena opened her eyes.
βTell who?β
The radio remained silent.
She stood.
βTell who?β
The voice answered.
βThat's the question.β
The screen changed.
A single sentence appeared.
WHO DID YOU LIE TO?
Elena stared.
Her mother?
Daniel?
The mysterious man?
Or herself?
She suddenly remembered a kitchen.
Daniel was sitting across from her.
His hands were shaking.
βYou promised you would tell me the truth.β
Elena heard herself answer:
βI am telling you the truth.β
Daniel looked at her.
βYou're lying.β
The memory vanished.
Elena gasped.
She put both hands over her mouth.
Daniel had known.
He had known she was lying.
But about what?
The countdown reached:
01:59:59
The door suddenly unlocked.
Elena stared at it.
She didn't move.
The radio spoke one final time.
βFor the first time tonight, you have a choice.β
Elena slowly reached for the handle.
βWhat choice?β
βStay here and remain the person you remember.β
She looked at the door.
βOr walk through it and discover who you really are.β
Elena opened the door.
A dark corridor waited outside.
There were two doors at the end.
One was marked:
TRUTH.
The other:
MEMORY.
Elena stared at them.
The radio behind her clicked one final time.
βChoose carefully.β
She stepped into the corridor.
The door behind her slammed shut.
Elena turned.
Locked.
She looked forward again.
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every light went out.
In complete darkness, someone whispered beside her ear:
βElenaβ¦β
She froze.
It was Daniel's voice.
βElena, don't trust him.β
The lights came back on.
No one was there.
But on the floor in front of her lay a small black envelope.
She picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Elena standing beside the mysterious man.
On the back, in her own handwriting, were six words:
I KILLED HIM THREE YEARS AGO.
Elena dropped the photograph.
The countdown on the wall changed.
01:58:00
And somewhere behind the walls, a man began laughing.
