Prologue
July 2099 – Valles Marineris, Mars
Red dust kicked up across the survey drone’s outer shell as it descended further into the fracture beneath Valles Marineris. The machine had already lost two stabilizers and several of its forward sensors. Every few seconds, static crawled across the feed in the DrakeTech control room. From the safety on the planet's surface, technicians leaned toward their stations, watching the drone force itself deeper through a passage. It was digging toward a signal no human instrument had detected until six hours earlier.
“Depth is nineteen-point-four kilometers.”
“Pressure holding.”
“Signal delay increasing.”
The fracture narrowed around the drone, its black walls swallowing the survey lights.
Then the passage opened.
The drone stopped.
No one in the control room spoke.
A chamber extended beyond the range of its scanners. Pale surfaces rose out of the darkness in seamless curves, catching the drone’s light and holding it along the surface. Thin bands of gold moved inside the walls in slow, deliberate pulses.
The mapping software attempted a full scan.
The first model appeared above the technicians.
Then collapsed.
A second model replaced it. Corridors intersected without touching. Two walls occupied the same coordinates. The floor curved upward and returned beneath itself without forming a circle.
“Run it again.”
“I already did.”
A warning flashed across the display.
GEOMETRIC RECONSTRUCTION FAILED
The drone turned toward the nearest wall. Symbols emerged beneath its light—not carved or printed, but suspended inside the material.
DrakeTech’s translation system cycled through twelve dead languages before producing a partial match.
CINDARAN ORIGIN: 11.7% CONFIDENCE
One of the technicians looked toward the man standing behind them.
Silas Drake did not react.
Young enough that silver had only begun to touch his hair, he stood with one hand resting against the back of an empty chair. A secondary display beside him continued to scroll energy-shortage projections from Earth.
Brownout zones.
Grid failures.
Population-loss estimates.
Silas ignored them.
“Move forward,” he said.
The drone obeyed.
Dust lifted behind it in slow spirals, untouched for longer than human history could measure.
The chamber widened.
At its center floated a transparent monolith within a web of golden filaments. The filaments disappeared into the surrounding walls, each one pulsing with the same low rhythm. The vibration crossed the drone’s audio feed and passed through the control room speakers.
Several technicians flinched.
One pressed a hand against her jaw.
“I can feel that in my skull.”
The drone’s sensors swept across the structure.
Numbers climbed.
Then kept climbing.
A technician leaned closer to his display.
“That output can’t be right.”
“How far outside the scale?” Silas asked.
The technician swallowed.
“It exceeds the output of every active power generation system DrakeTech has.”
Another warning opened.
THERMAL SOURCE DETECTED
“That chamber has been sealed for at least forty thousand years,” someone said. “There shouldn’t be anything warm down there.”
Silas’s attention sharpened.
“Can it be moved?”
The technicians looked at him.
“We don’t know what it is yet.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Silence settled over the room.
Silas looked toward the drone operator.
“Bring it closer.”
The drone advanced.
Its lights passed over the transparent surface.
The golden lattice reacted.
A low hum rose through the speakers. The filaments brightened one after another, carrying light outward through the chamber in branching patterns.
“Sir, it’s responding to us.”
“I see it.”
The drone extended a sampling probe.
“Wait,” one of the technicians said. “We should establish containment before—”
“Continue.”
The probe touched the surface.
Light erupted through the chamber.
Data flooded every monitor at once. Symbols moved too quickly for the translation systems to hold them. Warning boxes multiplied across the feed.
POWER SURGE
SIGNAL CONTAMINATION
BIOLOGICAL READING DETECTED
“Pull the probe back!”
“Hold position,” Silas said.
The operator hesitated as the hum deepened.
For one second, every light in the control room dimmed.
Then the drone withdrew its probe.
The surge faded.
The golden filaments settled into a soft, steady glow.
The camera adjusted its focus.
Something rested inside the monolith.
A hand.
Small enough to fit inside Silas Drake’s palm.
The camera moved closer.
An infant floated within the transparent chamber, suspended in an amber fluid. Her eyes were closed. Fine strands of pale hair drifted around her face.
Light moved beneath her skin.
Thin golden veins brightened along her throat, crossed her chest, and disappeared beneath the curve of one tiny fist.
No one in the room moved.
The medical scanner searched for a heartbeat.
Found one.
Slow.
Steady.
The infant’s chest rose.
Then remained still.
A timer appeared beside the image.
Fifty-seven seconds passed before she breathed again.
“Is she human?” a technician whispered.
The system offered no answer.
Silas stepped closer to the main display.
The infant’s face filled the glass before him. Golden light passed beneath her closed eyelids, then faded.
For the first time since the chamber had opened, Silas smiled.
“She’s perfect.”
A technician looked back at him.
“Sir?”
“Lock the coordinates. Seal every survey record from this sector.”
He touched the glass where the infant’s face hovered.
“Prepare a retrieval team.”
“We don’t know whether removing her will destabilize the chamber.”
“Then make sure the team is expendable.”
No one answered.
The classification field blinked at the bottom of the display.
DISCOVERY TYPE: UNRESOLVED
The senior technician placed her hands over the console.
“What do we log this as?”
Silas watched the golden light move beneath the infant’s skin.
“Asset acquisition.”
The technician entered the designation.
BIOLOGICAL UNKNOWN disappeared from the display.
In its place appeared:
DRAKETECH ASSET — SECURED
Silas’s reflection settled over the sleeping child’s face.
Prologue, Part 2
MERIDIAN CIVIC EDUCATION ARCHIVE
APPROVED HISTORICAL SUMMARY
Public Distribution Edition — Revised 2270
2105 — THE ANIMA AWAKENING
When the comet Caelestis passed through Earth’s upper atmosphere, it revealed extraordinary potential within the human genome.
Across the world, ordinary citizens developed abilities once considered impossible. In the absence of coordinated oversight, early manifestations resulted in widespread accidents, medical emergencies, and civil instability.
Public institutions and responsible private partners began immediate research into the safe identification, treatment, and integration of Anima-affected citizens.
Humanity had entered its next age.
2130–2137 — THE CASCADES
Sabotage, failing national governments, unstable energy grids, and the misuse of unregulated abilities triggered a series of global disasters.
World-wide communications failure. Resource wars. Thermonuclear exchange destroyed entire cities.
Billions were displaced as the systems of the old world proved incapable of protecting them.
From that loss came a necessary lesson:
Power without accountability endangers everyone.
2141 — THE MERIDIAN COMPACT
DrakeTech and its civic partners established Meridian City as a protected center of reconstruction.
Power returned sector by sector. Medical production resumed. Atmospheric shielding, sea barriers, transportation networks, and secure housing allowed civilization to begin again.
Standing before the first restored grid, Silas Drake delivered the promise that would define the new city:
No citizen of Meridian would be abandoned.
2168 — THE HEROIC REGISTRATION ACCORD
To ensure that extraordinary abilities served the public safely, Meridian established the Hero’s Guild.
Registration provided Anima-affected citizens with training, medical support, housing opportunities, employment protections, and a lawful path to heroic service.
The Guild transformed uncertainty into accountability.
It transformed power into purpose.
2293 — MERIDIAN TODAY
For more than two centuries, Meridian has stood as proof that humanity can survive any catastrophe when it chooses unity over chaos.
Its towers remain bright.
Its borders remain secure.
Its licensed heroes protect millions at home and abroad.
Reconstruction continues across every district, carrying the promise of the Meridian Compact into a new generation.
The work is not finished.
But Meridian endures.
THE CITY SHINES BECAUSE WE STAND TOGETHER.
