Chapter 1
ASHLEY
Fourteen years ago…
The rain has turned my hiding place into mud and smudged the dirt across my face. I don’t know how long it’s been since Mommy left the playground, but I’ve been hiding under the triple slide waiting for her. The rain makes me wonder if I should go find one of the stores that’s open and hide out where it’s dry.
I sniffle. But then if she came back and couldn’t find me, she’d be scared.
“Mommy…” I whimper.
I hear the sound of footsteps nearby and sniffle deeply, trying not to cry out loud. I don’t want this stranger to find me. I scoot back a little more against the underside of the slide.
A man’s face appears around the edge of the plastic slide. He looks nice, but his skin is paler than normal for being in the South. Mommy always said not to trust strangers.
“Hi there, little one. Are you okay? I heard you calling for your mommy. Is she nearby?” His voice is gentle, but I don’t trust him.
I turn away and squeeze my eyes shut, squeezing my knees tighter to my chest. Maybe he’ll go away. Maybe I’ll disappear. Please, oh please, let me disappear.
“How long have you been out here? Sweetheart, you’re covered in mud. I was heading to McDonald’s to meet with a couple of kids your age that I take care of. Would you like to come with me? I can get you something to eat.”
I keep my eyes shut tight until he sighs and walks away. I count to thirty before opening them again. Maybe he won’t come back. If I run now, he’d never find me. But what if Mommy comes back?
I wait too long. I hear footsteps again, but then I hear the voices of little kids.
“Mr. Rocio, it’s raining outside. Why are we going to the park in the rain?”
“I told you Drew, there’s a little girl I’d like you to meet. She’s hiding.”
The footsteps get closer. “Why wouldn’t she want to come to McDonald’s? It’s dry and the food is yummy.”
“She wouldn’t talk to me, Mia. I’m hoping she’ll talk to the two of you.”
I hear running on the mulch and suddenly there’s a little boy and girl standing in front of me.
“Hey! Why are you sitting in the dirt?” The little boy asks. Drew.
The little girl smacks his arm. “Drew that’s rude! Hi, I’m Mia. Mr. Rocio said he wanted us to meet you. He takes care of us and wanted us to help see if he could take care of you too. Do you want to come to McDonald’s with us? The one we were just at has a playground inside!
“We got to go today as a reward for being so good. We didn’t have to be told to sit down and be quiet as much at school today!”
I look back and forth at the two kids in front of me. They look clean and happy. They don’t look hungry or like they need to hide from anyone. They have clean clothes on.
I nod and Mia holds her hand out to me. I take it and she helps me stand up.
“Mr. Rocio will buy you whatever you want! Even a chocolate shake! Except you have to eat your food first. That’s the rule.” Drew says as he stands next to me, bouncing on his feet.
The man they call Mr. Rocio smiles. “That’s right Drew. And for your help here, I’ll even get you all a chocolate chip cookie if you want.”
Mia and Drew squeal. “Yay! Come on, come on!”
They drag me forward with Mr. Rocio following behind us. I feel like I should still wait for Mommy but I’m so hungry. Maybe she’ll tell someone when she can’t find me and they’ll look for me. Maybe Mr. Rocio will tell someone, and they can make sure Mommy’s okay.

Present Day…
It’s not the heat in New Orleans that bothers me. I can take the heat. But the humidity is so fucking annoying. It feels like walking through the locker room at a public pool. I mean, ugh. People assume that May shouldn’t be that bad because it’s still spring, or early summer. No. Spring in New Orleans is a joke. It’s just another word for summer which is the nice way of saying sweat season.
I’m so grateful for the air conditioning in the town car as it drives me through the streets. The heat in Texas is bad too, but Waco is so much better than this.
It feels good to be coming home though. I’ve only been home on breaks when school was out. I loved being at Baylor, but nothing feels as good as home does after being away for so long.
Rocio was kind enough to take me in that day. He suspected and was right that my mother had abandoned me at the playground. After getting me fed, he brought me back to the house and gave me my own room, got me clothes, and put me in school.
When I was old enough to understand, he told me the truth about himself. He’s a vampyre and the Harbinger of his own clan. He has a soft spot for children and takes in kids who are in situations like mine was. When I was thirteen, he asked me if I wanted him to find a safe family for me to go to or volunteer to donate blood for his clan.
Since I’d been in his care for five years, I chose to stay and willingly donate blood. Until I was eighteen, I donated like I would’ve at a blood drive. In return, Rocio provided me with the best of everything. I got a great education, never had to worry about a roof over my head, or food in my stomach.
The town car pulls up in front of the beautiful creole style townhouse that Rocio maintains his residence at. I grin at the sight of it and get out. There’s a guy sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair.
“Are you going to help me with my bags or do you still only use your muscles for damsels in distress and other feats to impress?”
He laughs. “At least I get something out of helping damsels in distress. Usually. You just want my services for free.”
Drew comes down the steps, unlocks the gate, and wraps me a hug that lifts me off my feet. “Good to see you home Ash. Nice of you to finally grace us with your presence for more than a few weeks.”
I roll my eyes. “Not my fault you opted to work at a gym instead of going to college. Now am I lifting these bags myself or are you just going to stand there?”
He grins and hauls my suitcases up the front steps. We wave at the driver as he drives away.
“So, where’s the rest of your shit? I know you have more than this.”
I purse my lips at him. “It’ll be here in a couple of days. Even expedited shipping takes a while when packing up a dorm room.”
I open the front door and feel a gust of air. I turn around and grin as Rocio holds his arms open for me.
“It’s so good to have you home, my dear Ashley.” He says as he folds me into a hug.
“Thanks. Nothing beats the feeling of sleeping in a bed that isn’t a dorm bed.” I say.
He laughs. “Understandable. Get yourself settled in and come find me when you’re done.”
I nod and head upstairs with Drew. I open my door and smile softly. It’s exactly as I left it, but at least the staff doesn’t let anything get musty here. Everything I didn’t take with me to college is in the exact same place, but there’s not a speck of dust. It wouldn’t shock me if the cleaning staff took pictures of everything first before cleaning.
Drew sets my bags down. “Dude, you do realize you could’ve asked Rocio to pay for movers, right? You could have had everything brought out right away. Just like you could’ve asked him to pay for an apartment.”
I sigh and open my closet to pull out some clean sheets. “Tuition at Baylor is almost seventy grand a year. I couldn’t ask him to pay for an apartment on top of that. I wasn’t coming home enough to supply enough blood.” He sits on the couch that’s on the wall opposite my bed. “Like Rocio cares. He’d have put you up in a penthouse if you’d asked.”
I roll my eyes and finish making my bed so I can sit. I lean up against the wall. “He’d open a gym for you if you asked too, you know.”
Drew grins. “Yeah, but then I’d have to do admin work and I hate that shit. This way I just get to work out and look good for the ladies.”
I snort. “You’re so stupid.”
He glances at the made bed. “So, are we going to fuck now or what?”
I laugh. “I have to finish so I can go meet with Rocio.”
He smirks. “Well then let me help you finish.”
I lick my lips as he climbs onto the bed. He grabs my neck and brings his lips to mine, kissing me deeply and thoroughly. He snakes his hand down under the waistband of my jeans and rubs my clit over my panties. I moan and he slips his tongue in to tangle with mine.
We shift position until he’s laying over me and he strips my pants off in moments. He’s too impatient to take my top off and kisses down my body until he reaches my thighs. He pulls my panties to the side and licks at my wet pussy until I’m crying out and writhing under him.
He pulls his pants down and slides on a condom. I bite my lip at the look at him as he lines himself up. When he pushes into me, I groan.
“Fuck! You feel so goddamn good!” I say, my voice strained with desire.
He leans down to kiss my neck and thrusts slowly at first. “You’ve always felt so fucking good to fuck.”
Drew picks up the pace until he’s drilling into me hard enough to make my bed bang against the walls. Before long he has me screaming as my orgasm crashes into me like a freight train. We lay on my bed for a bit, catching our breath.
Once I’m breathing normally, I push his chest a bit to get him off me. “All right, you have to go now. Thank you for the very, passionate welcome home. But I do actually have finish unpacking so I can meet with Rocio.”
Once Drew leaves, I finally get everything unpacked. As much as I appreciate the man’s physique, our relationship is strictly friends-with-benefits. When were sixteen we were curious about sex and admitted to the physical attraction to each other, but there’s never been anything romantic.
I sigh and straighten my clothes. Time to see the principal.
