They actually feel like people...
"Memory of Dust feels like a fantasy world that existed before the reader arrived. The different valleys, strange creatures, Stonehunters, and especially the Nalastones all have their own history and rules, but the story rarely feels like it is stopping just to explain them. What hooked me most was the group around Zin. They actually feel like people who have spent years traveling and getting into trouble together. Dreedy’s stubborn confidence, Karagi’s dry attitude, Hiria’s compassion, and Forlee’s humor give the quieter scenes as much personality as the fights. Zin is also an interesting lead because he is clearly capable, but his biggest problem might be how willing he is to destroy himself for everyone around him. The magic is probably my favorite part. The stones don’t just give people convenient powers. Using them has consequences, they interact in unexpected ways, and the characters have to understand their limits rather than simply overpower whatever they encounter. The creature encounters especially make the exploration feel dangerous and unpredictable. There are also hints of something much bigger happening beyond the expeditions. Stones are disappearing, different valleys are making moves, and characters who initially seem completely separate are slowly becoming connected. It starts as an adventure about people hunting magical stones and gradually begins to feel like the opening of a much larger epic fantasy. Definitely interested to see where it goes."
