Chapter 1 — The Offer

The envelope was waiting for Lena when she got home.

It sat on the kitchen table beside a half-empty cup of coffee, its white surface almost painfully clean against the mess of unpaid bills surrounding it.

Lena stopped at the doorway.

For a moment, she didn't move.

She already knew what it was.

Another bill.

Another warning.

Another reminder that her family was running out of time.

She dropped her bag onto the floor and picked up the envelope.

Her fingers tightened around it when she saw the red stamp across the front.

FINAL NOTICE.

"No," she whispered.

She opened it anyway.

The words blurred for a second.

The bank was demanding payment within thirty days.

If they couldn't pay, the house would be taken.

Lena read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

Nothing changed.

Her family's home—the only place she had known since childhood—could disappear in thirty days.

She grabbed her phone and called her father.

No answer.

Again.

Still nothing.

"Dad, please pick up."

Voicemail.

She lowered the phone.

Her younger brother Ethan was at university. Her mother had been gone for years.

Which meant there was only one person left to fix this.

Her.

Except Lena had less than two hundred dollars in her bank account.

A quiet laugh escaped her.

It wasn't funny.

She sat down at the kitchen table and buried her face in her hands.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Lena froze.

Nobody visited them anymore.

She wiped her eyes and walked toward the door.

When she opened it, a man in a black suit was standing on the porch.

He looked at her.

Then he said, "Lena Carter?"

"Yes."

"I'm here on behalf of Mr. Adrian Blackwood."

The name meant nothing to her.

"Who?"

The man handed her a black envelope.

"Mr. Blackwood would like to speak with you."

Lena stared at the envelope.

"About what?"

"He didn't say."

She almost closed the door.

Then she noticed something.

The envelope had her father's name written on it.

Daniel Carter.

Her stomach dropped.

"Wait."

She took the envelope.

The man stepped back.

"Mr. Blackwood is waiting for you at the Blackwood Tower."

"Why?"

This time, the man looked directly into her eyes.

"Because he knows what happened to your father."

Lena's heart stopped.

"What do you mean?"

But the man had already turned around.

"Tonight. Eight o'clock."

Then he walked away.

Lena stood in the doorway, the black envelope trembling in her hand.

She opened it.

Inside was a single card.

An address.

A time.

And one sentence.

Come alone.

---

At exactly eight o'clock, Lena stood in front of Blackwood Tower.

The building disappeared into the night sky.

She had never been anywhere like this.

The lobby looked more expensive than her entire house.

Marble floors.

Crystal lights.

People in perfectly tailored suits.

She almost turned around.

Then a voice came from behind her.

"You came."

Lena turned.

And forgot how to breathe.

The man standing behind her was tall, dressed in a black suit with no visible wrinkle.

Dark hair.

Sharp jaw.

Cold gray eyes.

He looked younger than she expected.

But there was something about him that made the entire room seem quieter.

"Adrian Blackwood?"

His eyes moved over her face.

"Yes."

"You know my father?"

"I did."

Lena's expression hardened.

"Did?"

Adrian said nothing.

She stepped closer.

"Where is he?"

"That's not why I asked you here."

"Then why am I here?"

Adrian reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the table between them.

Lena opened it.

Her eyes widened.

Inside were documents about her family's debt.

Every single detail.

The amount.

The bank.

The house.

Even Ethan's university fees.

She looked up.

"How do you know all this?"

"I know how much you need."

Lena's voice became colder.

"I don't need your money."

"You do."

"I said I don't."

Adrian leaned back.

"Your house will be taken in thirty days."

Lena said nothing.

"And your brother will have to leave university if you can't pay his tuition."

Her hands clenched.

"You've been investigating my family."

"I've been investigating your father."

"Why?"

Adrian's expression changed.

For the first time, there was something almost human in his eyes.

Regret.

"Because ten years ago, your father was blamed for something he didn't do."

Lena stared at him.

"What?"

"I can prove it."

Her heart began beating faster.

"Then prove it."

"I will."

Adrian pushed another document across the table.

But this time, there was something else written on it.

A contract.

Lena looked at the first page.

Then the second.

Then back at him.

"What is this?"

"A deal."

She laughed bitterly.

"Of course it is."

Adrian's eyes didn't leave hers.

"For the next ninety days, I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend."

Silence.

Lena stared at him.

Then she laughed again.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"I'm not."

"You brought me here to offer me money to pretend to date you?"

"Yes."

"Why me?"

Adrian paused.

Then he said quietly,

"Because you're the one person my family would never expect me to choose."

Lena looked down at the contract again.

There was something wrong with this.

She could feel it.

Adrian Blackwood wasn't offering her a way out.

He was offering her a way into something.

Something she didn't understand.

She pushed the contract back toward him.

"No."

Adrian didn't react.

"Think carefully."

"I already have."

"You have thirty days."

Lena stood.

"And you have five seconds before I walk out."

Adrian finally smiled.

It wasn't warm.

It wasn't kind.

It was the smile of a man who already knew how this would end.

"Then I'll give you five seconds."

He slid one final photograph across the table.

Lena glanced at it.

And froze.

It was a photograph of her father.

Ten years younger.

Standing beside another man.

A man Lena recognized immediately.

Adrian's father.

But that wasn't what made her blood run cold.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

If anything happens to me, never trust the Blackwoods.

Lena slowly looked up.

Adrian was watching her.

"Now," he said, "you understand why I chose you."

And suddenly, the contract wasn't the most frightening thing in the room.
