Chapter 1
《Amelia's POV》
My eyes darted around the rather bright yet unfamiliar room. Where am I and why do I feel this pounding headache? I groaned, pushing my back off the small bed and took another look around only to realize that I was at the hospital.
How did I get here? I racked my brain, trying to get answers when the memories of last night came rushing in all at once.
The fire... my daughter... I was instantly filled with anxiety.
"Abby???" I called out immediately, my eyes darting frantically around the room.
"Abigail??" I stood up from the bed, about to go search for her when the door was pushed ooen from outside and a man, wearing a white robe walked in.
"You're awake." He muttered in surprise as he mkved closer to me but I ignored his words.
"Where's Abigail? My daughter.... she was with me last night. Is she still receiving treatment?" I asked him.
The expression on his face changed and that made me fear for the worst but I still had hope. I was able to safely pull her out of the fire before I lost all consciousness.
I shielded her with my body through our escape so I'm sure must be suffering just a minor injury. She should be fine, I made sure of it!
"Where's my daughter?" I was slowly starting to lose my patience because of his silence and that eerie look on his face but he just sighed.
"Why don't you calm down fir..."
"Don't you dare! Don't tell me to calm down!! Where's my daughter?!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, showing I had no time for his bullshit.
Seeing how hysterical I was, he had no choice but to take me there but why... why are we going to the hospital's morgue??
Each step we took, the more my fear increased. She can't be... my daughter can't be dead.. was what I had thought till I saw the half burnt body of the child I carried in my womb for nine months and nursed as my own for five years laying motionlessly on the cold table.
My face turned pale as I walked closer to her body.
"A...Abigail??" I called out in shock.
What?? How's she here? Why's she laying here?? I saved her! I pulled her out and she was fine when I did so why?? I laid on her body, the pain coming out as loud cries.
The loss felt so unbearable that I lost consciousness after just a few screams. When I came to again, I found myself back at the ward with a nurse watching over me.
I stared blankly at the ceiling, my daughter's once happy face haunting my thoughts like a ghost. All through this time, I was never visited or reached out to by my side called husband.
Why would he ever visit when he has his other family to tend to? But me... the only one I called my family is gone all because of my negligence. Why couldn't I have been a better mother? Why did I have to lose consciousness at that moment?
Abigail.... I'm so sorry.... Then, the tears fell freely, followed by my mournful sobs, startling the nurse.
"You're awake." I heard her surprised voice.
Why does everyone keep telling me that? It always reminds me of the fact that I'm alive and my daughter isn't. Seeing the situation I was in, she didn't bother me, just tended to my little wounds before leaving.
After crying for a while, I stood up drowsily from my bed and walked out of the ward. As I walked through the rather lonely hallway, I heard familiar voices laughing and chatting happily.
Five years was enough to let me know that the deep voice was my husband's and the rest should be from that woman and her son. So, he was in this hospital and couldn't even come to see me or our daughter??
Curiosity got the best of me and I peeked into the ward through the little opened space. There, I saw my husband; William tending to his first love; Adeline who seemed to be hospitalized with her son; Carl wrapped around his bossom.
We were all affected by the school's fire aince he enrolled her son at the same school our daughter attended but he didn't care about his own family. That genuine smile on his face, he had never shown me or my daughter that side of him ever since we came into his life.
I understand that he never loved me and the only reason we got together in the first place was because of a drunken mistake. I was a victim in this marriage too but he never cared about that, especially after his now single first love came back into the picture four years ago.
The man she left him for died, making her a widow plus single mother and that was enough for him to let go of all the hatred he once had for her, thereby neglecting his own family.
He would rather spend time with another man's child than take care of his own but it doesn't matter anymore since she's gone now. He can finally live the life he had always wanted, his first love by his side and a son that isn't even his.
Unable to watch how happy they are anymore, I walked away, drowning their excited laughter in my head. Getting to the rooftop, the evening's breeze hit me, sending a shiver round my body.
Ignoring the cold, I walked up to the edge and climbed unto the rails. My knuckles turned white as the cold hit harder but my mind had already been made.
I have no reason to live if my baby isn't here with me. She was the only one I could lean on in a place I felt unloved and unwanted but I fumbled her and now she's gone. I have no right to keep breathing if I couldn't even care for her as I should.
I sucked in an harsh breath and pulled the necklace I was wearing from my neck. I opened up the pendant and my eyes watered when I saw the photo of I and my daughter.
This feels right.
I shut my eyes again and was about to carry on when I suddenly heard a ping. My phone.... at this moment? Do I have to check the message?? Despite not wanting to, I still checked and it was from that woman. I was about to ignore it when I saw my daughter's face on the video.
I immediately pressed play and saw my daughter, standing up from my unconscious body at the fire yesterday. Wait... she was still alive then so why...
Just then, I saw William rushing into the school's premises, looking so scared and anxious that he walked past our daughter even though she was standing close to him.
Even after everything he had done to us, Abigail never hated him, I made sure of that since he was still her father. So, she chased after him, probably to help him but she never returned.
He in the other hand did with that woman and her son but my daughter.... my lips quivered as more tears poured out of my eyes. We were right there but as always, he only saw those two and now...
Another message came in from the same woman;
"You can see now... your daughter died because of your husband. Are you still going to play the perfect wife now?" That question felt like a slap on my face, pulling me back to reality.
No matter what I do or how much I tried, my daughter and I will never be good enough for him but why do I have to suffer and allow that woman and her bastard son enjoy the life my daughter was supposed to??
I turned back and pushed myself back onto the rooftop, my eyes on the new picture she just sent me.... one showcasing William, her and her son, all wrapped around one another like the perfect family.
I could feel my deep hatred for them rising. I can't allow her enjoy this, not even William. No! Over my bead body!!
She thinks she can have that life?? She will, after I've ruined them both! I'm going to take vengeance for my daughter!
