Chapter 1: The Price of My Silence Zürich
The computer screen dimly lit the fourth-floor office of a private bank on Bahnhofstrasse. Valeria ran her hand through her blonde hair, feeling a cold sweat on the back of her neck. Outside, the light snowfall covered the city in perfect stillness, contrasting sharply with the chaos inside her mind. For three years, her job had been simple: financial auditing for top international clients. But the numbers tonight made no sense. Or, rather, they made a sense far too dangerous. A series of suspicious transfers, masked as investments in Swiss real estate funds, led directly to two destinations: Bogota and Sinaloa. Over eighty million Swiss francs had passed through shell accounts in the last six months. It was the drug money of the Colombian cartel led by Mateo Vargas, laundered with the direct complicity of the bank’s director. The office door swung open abruptly. Valeria froze, quickly closing the main tab. In the doorway stood Mr. Keller, her direct supervisor, with his winter coat over his shoulders and an unusually fixed gaze. “Still here, Valeria? You take your work too seriously,” he said, stepping slowly toward her desk. “Just a few routine checks left, Mr. Keller. I’m finished,” she lied, trying to control her voice. Keller stopped right beside her chair, his eyes reflecting in the half-empty screen. “Some people don’t understand that in Switzerland, discretion is worth more than gold. Silence pays royally, Valeria. But indiscretion... indiscretion has a price far too high.” 4 Valeria felt her heart race out of her chest. Keller knew. She grabbed her bag from the desk, her fingers brushing against the USB flash drive onto which she had managed to download all the evidence of the transactions just a few minutes ago. “Good night, Mr. Keller,” she said, rising abruptly and walking past him without looking back. As the elevator descended toward the parking lot, Valeria knew that her quiet life in Zürich had just come to an end. From that moment on, she was a target.
