My Hero Academia: Sandstorm Hero

Ren Kitagawa forced his eyes open against a blinding white glare.

The world in front of him was pure white.

[System] Welcome, host. You have become one of the rare few selected to transmigrate.

'A dream?'

That was Ren's first thought. Out of habit, he pinched himself.

No pain.

"So it is a dream," he muttered. "A pretty realistic one, though. My head feels weirdly light."

With that, he closed his eyes again.

If his head had not been spinning, he might have treated this like a lucid dream and started steering the story himself.

[System] Well... you could call it a dream. The difference is that everything happening now is real.

"Mm."

Ren did not bother arguing.

[System] As a transmigrator, you will receive a randomized starter package from the system.

"Mm."

Ren gave another absentminded reply.

[System] Congratulations, host. You have obtained the power of the Suna Suna no Mi, the Sand-Sand Fruit. Enhanced version: no weakness to seawater.

[System] Congratulations, host. You have obtained Conqueror's Haki.

[System] Congratulations, host. You have obtained Observation Haki.

[System] Congratulations, host. You have obtained Armament Haki.

[System] World transfer commencing: My Hero Academia.

[System] Rewards issued. Enjoy your transmigration, host.

"Mm."

Most of it slipped past him. Only a few words drifted through the haze: My Hero Academia.

Then a sharp pain tore through his skull.

His eyes snapped open.

The first thing he saw was a ceiling he did not recognize.

An oxygen tube rested against his face.

He looked around. A hospital bed. White walls. Medical equipment.

'A hospital?'

'What happened? How did I end up here?'

For a moment, Ren was completely lost.

Then a woman rushed into the room, her face lighting up with frantic relief.

"Ren! You're finally awake!"

The instant she spoke, a flood of unfamiliar memories slammed into his mind.

Ren's expression shifted with them. One second he almost smiled; the next his face went blank.

"Doctor! Doctor!" the woman shouted toward the hallway. "Something's wrong! I think the accident did something to his head!"

Several nurses hurried in at the sound of her voice.

Ren quickly forced himself to speak.

"Mom... I'm fine."

Hearing him call her that made the woman burst into tears. She pulled him into her arms and held him tight.

After a while, Ren managed to get his mother to leave by saying he needed to rest.

Only then did he finally begin sorting through what he had learned.

This really was the world of My Hero Academia.

In this life, his full name was Ren Kitagawa.

Just as the system had said in that white space, he now possessed the Sand-Sand Fruit and all three types of Haki.

He had not tested the seawater immunity yet.

But there was one thing he already understood. Because the system had given him those powers, the body's original Quirk had been erased. From now on, the only abilities he could use were the ones the system had left him.

Of course, having them and mastering them were two different things.

How far he could develop those powers would depend on him.

As for why this body had ended up in the hospital, the answer was simple: a car accident. The previous Ren had been hit and suffered a head injury.

That explained why his head had felt so dizzy in the white space.

He did not know what to feel.

The system was not quite like the ones he knew from stories. It had dropped a starter package into his lap, then vanished.

In other words, if he wanted to survive in this world, he would have to rely on himself.

"Systems really are getting lazy these days," Ren sighed. "They toss you a few things and disappear."

A few days later, Ren was finally discharged.

He had not been able to test the Sand-Sand Fruit while he was still in the hospital. Now, at last, he had the chance.

Inside his room, Ren let his body slowly dissolve.

Grains of sand spilled to the floor.

Then the sand gathered again, rising little by little until it rebuilt itself into a human shape.

"Not bad," Ren murmured.

The Sand-Sand Fruit was a Logia-type Devil Fruit from One Piece. It allowed its user to turn any part of the body into sand, shape that sand into weapons, and attack by transforming the body itself.

It could drain moisture from living things and objects, dry out rock or soil until it crumbled back into sand, pull water from beneath the desert to create quicksand, and gather sand in the palm to form a sandstorm.

In One Piece, the fruit's most famous user was Crocodile. Unfortunately for him, Luffy discovered early on that water could make his body tangible, then used that weakness to beat him.

Ren's version was different.

The system had called it an enhanced version, immune to the standard Devil Fruit weakness of seawater. If seawater did not work, ordinary water should not either.

To be sure, Ren tested it himself.

The weakness was gone.
