Another World — Twin Drama

Newlyweds Cass Winthrop and Lila Quince adopt twins; they affectionately name Francesca “Frankie” in honor of Cass’s deceased wife, Frankie Frame, and the other. Mackenzie “Mac” Winthrop-Quince is named in honor of Mac Cory. In other news, Jake and Vicky are frantic when they learn their twins are missing from the hospital nursery. Is the not-so-dead-Grant Harrison somehow involved? Also, Rachel and Carl host a tribute dinner in honor of Mackenzie “Mac” Cory, but Amanda’s daughter, Alexandra “Alli” Fowler, has news that stuns the family.

Chapter One — The Night Everything Changed

Cass Winthrop had never expected happiness to feel this quiet.

The Winthrop house—once a monument to chaos, heartbreak, and the occasional flaming casserole—had settled into a warm, steady hum. Lila Quince Winthrop moved through the living room with the soft, instinctive grace of a woman who had finally found the life she’d been chasing. In her arms, one of the newly adopted twins let out a tiny sigh.

“Mac’s already got your dramatic flair,” Lila whispered, brushing a curl from the baby’s forehead.

Cass looked up from the rocking chair where he held the other twin. Francesca—Frankie—blinked up at him with wide, solemn eyes, as if she already understood the weight of her name. Cass swallowed hard. Even now, years later, the memory of Frankie Frame’s laughter could still knock the breath out of him.

“She’s got her mother’s stare,” Cass murmured. “That ‘I know what you’re up to, Winthrop’ look.”

Lila crossed to him, touching his shoulder. “She’s ours now. Both of them. And we’re going to give them a life full of love, not ghosts.”

Cass nodded, though the ghosts never truly left Bay City. They only waited for the next door to open.

Chapter Two — The Missing Twins

Across town, the hospital erupted into panic.

Jake McKinnon’s voice echoed down the corridor, sharp and frantic. “They were right here! Vicky, they were right here!”

Victoria Hudson McKinnon clutched the edge of the empty nursery bassinet, her breath coming in short, terrified bursts. “Bridget and Michael don’t just disappear. Someone took them. Jake—someone took our girls.”

Nurses scrambled. Security was called. Doctors whispered in tight clusters. But Vicky’s mind had already leapt to the one name she prayed she’d never have to think again.

“Grant,” she said, barely audible.

Jake froze. “Vicky… Grant Harrison is dead.”

Her eyes were wild, shining with a mother’s instinctive certainty. “No. He’s not. I can feel it. He’s alive, and he’s come back for them.”

Jake wanted to argue, but the truth was a cold, creeping thing: Grant Harrison had always been a man who slipped through cracks, who survived what should have killed him, who returned when everyone least expected it.

And if he was alive, he would do anything—anything—to reclaim what he believed was his.

Chapter Three — The Cory Dinner

Rachel Cory had hosted hundreds of dinners in her lifetime, but tonight’s felt different. The Cory mansion glowed with candlelight, portraits of Mac Cory watching over the gathering like benevolent ghosts. Carl Hutchins stood beside her, his hand resting lightly at her back, a gesture of solidarity and quiet pride.

“This is for Mac,” Rachel said softly. “For everything he built. For everything he believed in.”

Amanda Cory arrived with her daughter, Alli Fowler, who looked pale and distracted. Rachel noticed immediately.

“Darling, are you alright?”

Alli opened her mouth, closed it, then tried again. “I… I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure.”

Amanda’s expression tightened. “Alli, what’s going on?”

The room quieted. Even Carl’s usual sardonic calm shifted into alertness.

Alli swallowed. “I’ve been doing some digging into the Cory trust records. Something didn’t add up. And I found… I found something about Uncle Mac.”

Rachel’s breath caught. “What kind of something?”

Alli looked around the room, her voice trembling. “Mom… Grandma… Mac had a child. Another child. One no one knew about.”

The silence was absolute.

Carl’s eyes narrowed with the kind of interest that meant trouble.

Amanda’s face drained of color.

Rachel felt her heart drop into a place she hadn’t visited in decades.

“Who?” she whispered.

Alli took a shaky breath. “I don’t know yet. But whoever they are… they’re alive. And they’re claiming their share of the Cory legacy.”

Chapter Four — Threads Begin to Cross

Cass and Lila were still settling the twins into their new nursery when the phone rang. Cass answered, expecting a congratulatory call.

Instead, he heard Jake’s voice—raw, frantic, breaking.

“Cass… our twins are gone.”

Cass stood frozen, Frankie’s tiny hand curled around his finger.

Across town, Vicky stared at a security monitor showing a grainy figure slipping through a back exit with two bundled infants.

The figure moved with a familiar, predatory confidence.

Grant Harrison.

And in the Cory mansion, Rachel sank into a chair as Alli’s revelation rippled through the family like a shockwave.

A missing pair of twins. A resurrected enemy. A secret heir. A legacy about to fracture.

Bay City had always been a town of storms.

Tonight, three of them were about to collide.

Chapter Five — Grant’s First Move

The storm rolled in over Bay City like a warning.

Jake stood at the hospital’s security office, fists clenched, watching the grainy footage loop again and again. The figure in the video moved with a chilling calm—no hesitation, no panic, no rush. A man who believed he had every right to take what he wanted.

Vicky hovered behind him, arms wrapped around herself. “Jake… that’s him. I know it.”

Jake didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. The silhouette, the posture, the predatory stillness—it all pointed to one impossible truth.

Grant Harrison was alive.

And he had their twins.

Grant Harrison had always been a man of precision. He didn’t steal the twins out of desperation. He stole them because he had a plan.

The safehouse he’d chosen was tucked deep in the industrial outskirts of Bay City—an abandoned shipping office with boarded windows and a single working generator. Inside, Bridget and Michele slept in two makeshift cribs, unaware of the man pacing the room like a caged animal.

Grant paused beside them, studying their faces.

“They should have been mine,” he whispered. “All of this should have been mine.”

His voice cracked—not with remorse, but with the brittle edge of obsession. He touched the side of one crib, fingers trembling.

“You’re going to save me,” he murmured. “You’re going to give me back everything they stole.”

He turned toward the desk where a burner phone lay. A single number was written on a scrap of paper—one he had memorized long before tonight.

He dialed.

Cass Winthrop was rocking baby Frankie when his phone rang.

He answered without checking the caller ID, expecting Jake again.

Instead, a familiar voice slid through the line like poison.

“Hello, Cass.”

Cass froze. Lila, across the room, saw his expression and went still.

“Grant,” Cass said, barely breathing the name.

“Ah. You do remember me.” Grant sounded amused. “I was worried Bay City had forgotten.”

Cass’s pulse hammered. “Where are you? What have you done?”

Grant chuckled softly. “Relax. I haven’t done anything… yet. But I thought you’d like to know that I have something Jake and Vicky value very much.”

Cass stood, clutching Frankie protectively. “You took their twins.”

“I rescued them,” Grant corrected. “From a world that never gave me a chance. From people who destroyed my life. I’m simply reclaiming what’s mine.”

Cass’s voice sharpened. “Grant, listen to me. You’re sick. You need help.”

Grant’s tone shifted—calm, cold, terrifying. “I need leverage, Cass. And now I have it.”

Lila stepped closer, whispering, “Cass, what is he saying?”

Cass shook his head, signaling her to stay back.

Grant continued, “Tell Jake I’ll be in touch. And Cass… congratulations on the twins. I hear one of them is named Frankie. Touching. Nostalgic. Dangerous.”

Cass’s blood ran cold.

Grant hung up.

Across town, Vicky’s phone buzzed. A text. No number. No signature.

Just a photo.

Bridget and Michael—alive, unharmed, but unmistakably in Grant’s possession.

Vicky’s knees buckled. Jake caught her before she hit the floor.

“He’s taunting us,” Jake said, voice shaking with fury.

“No,” Vicky whispered. “He’s warning us.”

Meanwhile, at the Cory mansion, Rachel sat in her study, still reeling from Alli’s revelation. The Cory legacy had survived scandals, betrayals, and wars—but a secret child of Mac Cory threatened to unravel everything.

Amanda paced. “Mom, if this is true—if Dad had another child—this changes the entire trust. The entire estate.”

Carl watched them with a predator’s calm. “The timing is… interesting.”

Rachel looked up sharply. “What are you implying?”

Carl folded his hands. “That Bay City is rarely struck by one storm at a time. Someone benefits from chaos. Someone always does.”

Alli stepped forward, holding a folder. “There’s more. The heir… whoever they are… they’ve already contacted a lawyer.”

Rachel’s breath caught. “Who?”

Alli hesitated. “Cass Winthrop.”

Amanda’s eyes widened. “Cass? But he just adopted—”

Rachel stood, realization dawning like a dark sunrise.

“Carl was right,” she whispered. “This isn’t a coincidence. Someone is moving pieces across Bay City.”

And somewhere in a darkened safehouse, Grant Harrison stared at a map of Bay City pinned to the wall.

Three circles marked three locations:

The hospital. The Cory mansion. The Winthrop Quince home.

Grant smiled.

“Time to begin.”

Chapter Six — Cass and Lila Pulled Into the Investigation

Cass didn’t speak for a long moment after Grant hung up. The silence in the Winthrop Quince living room felt thick, electric, as if the air itself understood the danger now creeping toward their doorstep.

Lila stood in front of him, Felicity tucked against her shoulder, her voice low and steady. “Cass… what did he say?”

Cass swallowed hard. “He has Jake and Vicky’s twins. And he knows about ours.”

Lila’s grip tightened protectively around Mac. “He’s not coming near them. Not ever.”

Cass nodded, though the tremor in his hands betrayed him. “Grant doesn’t make idle threats. If he’s alive, he’s desperate. And desperate men do reckless things.”

Lila stepped closer, her voice fierce. “Then we fight back. We’ve done it before.”

Cass managed a thin smile. “Not against someone like Grant.”

Jake and Vicky arrived twenty minutes later, both looking hollowed out by fear. Vicky rushed to Cass, grabbing his arms.

“He called you,” she said. “Jake said he called you.”

Cass nodded. “He wanted me to know he has the twins. And he wanted me to know he’s watching.”

Jake’s jaw clenched. “He’s using them as leverage. For what?”

Cass hesitated. “I don’t know yet. But Grant doesn’t take hostages without a plan.”

Vicky’s voice cracked. “He sent me a picture. They’re alive, Cass. They’re alive.”

Lila touched Vicky’s shoulder gently. “We’re going to get them back.”

Jake turned to Cass. “We need to loop in the police.”

Cass shook his head. “Not yet.”

Jake stared at him. “Cass—”

“If we go to the police,” Cass said, “Grant will panic. And if he panics, he’ll disappear with the girls. He’s already proven he can vanish. We need to keep him talking.”

Jake paced, fists clenched. “So what? We just wait for him to call again?”

Cass exhaled slowly. “No. We make him call.”

Later that night, Cass sat alone in his home office, staring at the burner phone Grant had used. He replayed the call in his mind—Grant’s tone, his choice of words, the way he lingered on Frankie’s name.

Grant wasn’t just threatening Jake and Vicky.

He was warning Cass.

Cass reached for the file Alli Fowler had dropped off earlier that day—Mac Cory’s secret heir. He hadn’t had time to look at it, but now the folder felt heavier, more ominous.

He opened it.

Inside were trust documents, old financial ledgers, and a single name circled in red ink.

Cass froze.

The name wasn’t familiar.

But the handwriting was.

Grant Harrison.

Cass’s stomach dropped.

Grant had known about Mac’s secret heir long before Alli discovered it. He had been digging into the Cory legacy. He had been preparing something.

And now he had the leverage to execute it.

Meanwhile, Lila stood in the twins’ nursery, watching Frankie and Mac sleep. The soft glow of the nightlight cast gentle shadows across the room, but Lila felt none of its comfort.

She whispered, “Cass is right. Grant’s not just after Jake and Vicky.”

She touched Frankie’s tiny hand.

“He’s coming for us too.”

At the Cory mansion, Rachel sat in her study, staring at the same name Cass had just seen. Carl hovered nearby, watching her reaction with unsettling calm.

Rachel whispered, “This can’t be true.”

Carl’s voice was smooth. “It is. And someone has known for a very long time.”

Rachel looked up sharply. “You think Grant Harrison is involved.”

Carl smiled faintly. “I think Grant Harrison is never far from trouble.”

Amanda burst into the room. “Mom—Jake just called. The twins are missing. Grant might be alive.”

Rachel’s breath caught.

Carl’s eyes gleamed.

“Ah,” he murmured. “The storm grows.”

Back at the Winthrop Quince home, Cass finally made his decision.

He picked up his phone and dialed a number he hadn’t used in years.

When the voice answered, Cass said only one thing:

“Grant Harrison is alive. And I need your help.”

The voice on the other end replied, calm and deadly:

“I’ll be in Bay City by morning.”

Cass hung up, exhaling shakily.

Lila stepped into the doorway. “Who was that?”

Cass looked at her, eyes dark with resolve.

“Someone who knows how to hunt monsters.”

Chapter Seven — The Return of an Unexpected Ally

The next morning broke gray and heavy over Bay City, the kind of sky that warned of trouble long before the first crack of thunder. Cass stood at the window of his office, watching the clouds gather like an omen. He hadn’t slept. Neither had Lila. The twins had sensed the tension, waking every hour with soft cries that only deepened Cass’s resolve.

He checked his watch.

The ally he’d called should have arrived by now.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Cass felt the shift in the air—an old instinct, one he hadn’t used in years. He moved quickly, opening the door before Lila could reach it.

A tall figure stood on the porch, trench coat damp from the morning mist, eyes sharp and familiar.

Cass exhaled. “I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

The man stepped inside, voice low and steady. “You said, Grant Harrison. That’s all I needed.”

Lila appeared in the hallway, Mac in her arms. Her eyes widened. “Oh my God…It’s you.”

He nodded politely. “Mrs. Winthrop.”

Cass gestured toward the living room. “Come in, Morgan.”

Morgan Freeman—Bay City’s once brilliant, once broken doctor—set his bag down and surveyed the room with the calm of a man who had seen too much and survived more. He had left Bay City years ago, trying to outrun his own ghosts. But Cass knew one thing: Morgan understood Grant Harrison better than almost anyone alive.

And Morgan owed Cass a favor.

Lila’s voice trembled with relief. “Morgan, if Grant is alive—”

“He is,” Morgan said. “And if he’s taken Jake and Vicky’s girls, he’s not acting alone.”

Cass frowned. “What makes you say that?”

Morgan reached into his coat and pulled out a file—thin, worn, and marked with the seal of a private intelligence firm.

“I’ve been tracking rumors for months,” Morgan said. “Sightings. Financial movements. A man using aliases Grant used years ago. Someone has been helping him stay hidden.”

Cass felt a chill. “Who?”

Morgan hesitated. “I don’t know yet. But I know this—Grant isn’t just back. He’s organized.”

Lila sank onto the couch. “Why take the twins? Why now?”

Morgan’s gaze shifted to the nursery door, where Frankie’s soft cooing drifted through the house.

“Because Grant doesn’t just want revenge,” Morgan said. “He wants power. And he wants a legacy.”

Cass stiffened. “Legacy?”

Morgan nodded. “He’s been digging into the Cory trust records. He’s been looking for leverage. And if he knows about Mac Cory’s secret heir—”

Cass’s breath caught. “He does.”

Morgan’s expression hardened. “Then he’s building something bigger than a kidnapping.”

Across town, Jake and Vicky sat in their living room, waiting for Cass’s update. Vicky’s hands shook as she stared at the photo Grant had sent. Jake paced like a caged animal.

The doorbell rang.

Jake opened it—and froze.

“Morgan?” Jake whispered.

Morgan stepped inside. “I came as soon as Cass called.”

Vicky’s eyes filled with tears. “You know how Grant thinks.”

Morgan nodded. “I know how he obsesses.”

Jake swallowed hard. “Then tell us—why our girls?”

Morgan took a slow breath. “Because Grant believes he’s owed something. And he’s going to use your twins to get it.”

Vicky’s voice cracked. “Get what?”

Morgan looked at them with grim certainty.

“Control.”

At the Cory mansion, Rachel sat with Carl in the study, the name of Mac’s secret heir burning in her mind. Amanda paced, Alli hovered near the fireplace, and tension thickened the air.

A knock sounded.

Rachel rose, opening the door—and gasped.

“Morgan?”

Morgan stepped inside, nodding respectfully. “Rachel. Amanda. Alli.”

Carl’s eyes narrowed. “Well. The prodigal doctor returns.”

Morgan ignored him. “I need to know everything you’ve found about Mac’s heir.”

Rachel hesitated. “Morgan… why?”

“Because Grant Harrison already knows,” Morgan said. “And he’s using that information to destabilize Bay City.”

Amanda’s voice trembled. “He kidnapped Jake and Vicky’s twins.”

Morgan nodded. “And he’s not finished.”

Alli stepped forward. “Morgan… do you know who the heir is?”

Morgan looked at her, then at Rachel, then at Cass—who had just entered behind him.

“I don’t know the name,” Morgan said. “But I know one thing.”

Everyone leaned in.

Morgan’s voice dropped to a razor-thin whisper.

“Grant Harrison believes the heir is the key to taking down the Cory family. And he’s going to use those twins to force the heir out of hiding.”

Rachel’s breath caught.

Cass felt the room tilt.

Carl smiled darkly.

Amanda whispered, “Oh my God…”

Alli clutched the file to her chest.

Morgan straightened, eyes burning with purpose.

“We’re not dealing with a kidnapping,” he said. “We’re dealing with a takeover.”

Chapter Eight — Grant’s First Demand

The message arrived just after dawn.

Cass had been pacing the living room, unable to sit, unable to breathe normally. Lila fed the twins in the nursery, humming softly to keep her own nerves from unraveling. Jake and Vicky sat on the couch, hollow-eyed, waiting for something—anything—from the man who had stolen their twins.

Morgan stood near the window, arms folded, watching the street with the vigilance of someone who expected danger to walk right up the driveway.

Then Cass’s phone buzzed.

A single text. A single line.

“It’s time.”

Cass’s stomach dropped. “He’s making his first demand.”

Morgan stepped closer. “Open it.”

Cass tapped the screen.

A second message appeared—longer, deliberate, unmistakably Grant.

You want the twins back. You want peace. You want Bay City to stay standing. Then you will do exactly as I say. No police. No press. No interference. You will meet me tonight at the old Harborview Shipyard. Alone. Bring the Cory documents. All of them. Every page. Every secret. If you don’t… the girls disappear forever.

Vicky let out a strangled cry. Jake grabbed her, holding her as if she might collapse.

Lila stepped into the doorway, Mac on her hip, Frankie in her arms. “Cass… he wants the Cory documents? Why?”

Cass exchanged a grim look with Morgan. “Because Grant wants leverage. And the Cory heir is the biggest piece of leverage Bay City has ever seen.”

Morgan nodded. “He’s going to use the twins to force Cass to hand over the entire trust history. Once he has it, he can manipulate the heir, the estate, the family—everything.”

Jake’s voice cracked with fury. “Then give him the damn documents.”

Cass shook his head. “If I hand them over, Grant wins. He’ll have the power to destroy the Corys, destabilize the city, and vanish with your daughters anyway.”

Vicky’s voice trembled. “Cass… he has our babies.”

Cass’s eyes softened. “I know. And I swear to you—I will get them back. But we can’t walk into his trap blind.”

Morgan stepped forward. “Grant wants you alone. That means he’s planning something. He doesn’t just want the documents. He wants you.”

Lila stiffened. “Cass is not going anywhere alone.”

Morgan nodded. “He won’t. But Grant can’t know that.”

Jake paced, fists clenched. “So what do we do?”

Morgan opened his bag, pulling out a small device—compact, metallic, unmistakably tactical. “We prepare.”

Cass frowned. “What is that?”

“A signal scrambler,” Morgan said. “Grant will expect you to bring a phone. This will block any remote detonation, tracking, or interference.”

Vicky gasped. “Detonation?”

Morgan’s voice was calm. “Grant has used explosives before.”

Jake swore under his breath.

Cass exhaled slowly. “He wants me at the shipyard at nine. That gives us twelve hours.”

Morgan nodded. “Twelve hours to figure out what Grant really wants.”

At the Cory mansion, Rachel sat at her desk, staring at the same documents Grant demanded. Carl hovered nearby, watching her with unsettling interest.

Amanda burst into the room. “Mom—Cass just called. Grant made his first demand.”

Rachel’s breath caught. “What does he want?”

Amanda swallowed. “The Cory documents. All of them.”

Carl’s smile was thin and sharp. “Ah. So the game begins.”

Rachel stood, trembling. “If Grant gets those documents, he’ll know everything. Every secret. Every vulnerability.”

Amanda nodded. “And he’ll use them.”

Alli stepped forward, clutching her folder. “Grandma… I think I know why he wants them.”

Rachel turned. “Why?”

Alli opened the folder, revealing a single page—one she hadn’t shown before.

A birth certificate.

Rachel’s heart stopped.

Amanda gasped.

Carl’s eyes gleamed.

Alli whispered, “Grant wants the documents because he knows who the Cory heir is.”

Rachel’s voice broke. “Alli… who is it?”

Alli looked up, tears in her eyes.

“It’s someone we all know.”

Back at the Winthrop Quince home, Cass stared at Grant’s message again, feeling the weight of Bay City pressing down on him.

Morgan stepped beside him. “He’s escalating. He’ll make more demands.”

Cass nodded. “And we’ll be ready.”

Lila touched his arm. “Cass… promise me you won’t walk into that shipyard alone.”

Cass looked at her, then at the twins, then at Jake and Vicky.

“I promise.”

But his eyes said something else.

He knew Grant. He knew how Grant thought. And he knew one truth:

To save the twins, Cass Winthrop might have to walk straight into the lion’s den.

Chapter Nine — The Cory Heir Reveals Themselves

The Cory mansion had weathered decades of scandal, heartbreak, and triumph, but nothing had ever felt quite like this. The air was thick, charged, as if the walls themselves were bracing for impact. Rachel stood at the center of the study, the Cory documents spread across her desk like a map of buried sins. Amanda hovered near the fireplace, arms crossed tightly. Alli clutched the folder she’d been guarding for days.

Carl watched them all with the unsettling calm of a man who enjoyed storms.

Cass and Morgan arrived moments later, tension radiating off both of them. Cass looked at Rachel, then at the documents, then at Alli.

“Show us,” he said quietly.

Alli swallowed hard. “I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure. But after Grant’s demand… after everything… I can’t keep this to myself.”

She opened the folder.

Inside was the birth certificate—the one she had shown Rachel and Amanda—but now she revealed the second page beneath it. A notarized affidavit. A trust amendment. A name.

Rachel’s breath caught.

Amanda’s hand flew to her mouth.

Cass felt the room tilt.

Morgan’s eyes narrowed.

Carl smiled like a man watching a chessboard fall into place.

Alli whispered, “The Cory heir… is me.”

Silence.

Absolute, suffocating silence.

Rachel stared at her granddaughter, unable to speak. Amanda’s knees nearly buckled. Cass felt the shock ripple through him like electricity.

Morgan stepped forward slowly. “Alli… are you certain?”

Alli nodded, tears gathering. “I found the documents in a sealed trust file. Grandma, Mom… Mac set it up before he died. He left a portion of the Cory estate to a child born out of wedlock. A child he never publicly acknowledged. A child he wanted protected.”

Amanda whispered, “But… Alli… you’re my daughter. You’re not—”

Alli shook her head. “Mom… Mac wasn’t just my grandfather.”

Rachel’s voice finally broke through the silence, trembling. “Alli… darling… what are you saying?”

Alli held up the affidavit. “Mac had an affair years before he married you, Grandma. The woman left Bay City. She raised her child alone. That child grew up, had a daughter… me.”

Amanda staggered backward. “No… no, Alli, that would mean—”

“That Mac Cory was my biological grandfather,” Alli whispered. “Not yours.”

Rachel pressed a hand to her chest, breath shaking. “Oh, Amanda…”

Amanda’s eyes filled with tears. “Alli… why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t know,” Alli said. “Not until I started digging into the trust records. Not until I found the DNA confirmation Mac had ordered. He knew. He knew who I was. He just never told anyone.”

Cass sank into a chair, stunned. “Grant knows this.”

Morgan nodded grimly. “And he wants the documents to prove it. If he gets them, he can manipulate Alli, threaten the Cory estate, destabilize the entire family.”

Carl stepped forward, voice smooth. “And now we understand why Grant is moving so aggressively. He wants control of the Cory legacy. And the key to that legacy is standing right here.”

Alli trembled. “I didn’t ask for any of this.”

Rachel rushed to her, pulling her into a tight embrace. “You are family. You have always been family. Nothing changes that.”

Amanda joined them, tears streaming. “You are my daughter. That will never change.”

Alli clung to them both, shaking.

Morgan cleared his throat. “We need to protect her. Grant will come for her next.”

Cass nodded. “He’ll use the twins to force my hand. And once he has the documents, he’ll come after Alli.”

Rachel looked up, fierce and determined. “Then we stop him.”

Carl’s smile sharpened. “At last, something we agree on.”

Across town, in the dim light of the abandoned shipyard office, Grant Harrison stood over a table littered with maps, documents, and surveillance photos.

One photo sat at the center.

Alli Fowler.

Grant traced her face with a fingertip.

“The heir,” he whispered. “The key.”

He glanced at the two bassinets in the corner, where Bridget and Michael slept peacefully.

“Time to collect what’s mine.”

Chapter Ten — The Shipyard Meeting: Grant’s Hidden Partner Steps Into the Light

The Harborview Shipyard had been abandoned for years, left to rot under the weight of rusted cranes and forgotten cargo containers. Tonight, it felt like the edge of the world—silent, cold, and waiting.

Cass Winthrop stood at the entrance, the Cory documents locked inside a briefcase at his side. Morgan Winthrop remained hidden in the shadows behind a stack of shipping pallets, watching every angle, every movement. Jake and Vicky waited in a car several blocks away, ready to move the moment Cass gave the signal. Lila stayed home with the twins, praying silently, fiercely.

Cass stepped forward.

A single floodlight snapped on.

Grant Harrison emerged from the darkness.

He looked thinner, sharper, his eyes burning with a manic clarity that made Cass’s skin crawl. He carried himself like a man who believed he had already won.

“Cass,” Grant said, smiling faintly. “You came.”

Cass kept his voice steady. “Where are Bridget and Michael?”

Grant gestured lazily toward a small office building near the loading dock. “Safe. For now.”

Cass’s jaw tightened. “You said you wanted the documents.”

Grant nodded. “I did. And I still do. But first, I want to see you understand what’s happening.”

Cass exhaled slowly. “Grant, this isn’t going to end the way you think.”

Grant’s smile widened. “Oh, Cass. It already has.”

He snapped his fingers.

Another figure stepped out from behind a shipping container.

Cass froze.

Morgan stiffened in the shadows.

Jake, watching through binoculars from the car, whispered, “Oh my God…”

Vicky’s breath caught.

The figure walked into the light—calm, confident, familiar.

Jordan Stark.

Cass felt the world tilt.

Jordan Stark—once a powerful, enigmatic force in Bay City, once presumed dead, once the architect of some of the city’s darkest manipulations—now stood beside Grant Harrison as if he had never left.

Grant spread his arms. “You remember Jordan, don’t you? He’s been… instrumental.”

Jordan’s voice was smooth, controlled. “Hello, Cass.”

Cass swallowed hard. “You’re supposed to be dead.”

Jordan smiled faintly. “People in Bay City have a habit of returning when they’re needed.”

Morgan stepped out of the shadows, fury tightening his voice. “Jordan Stark. I should have known.”

Jordan nodded politely. “Morgan. Still playing the hero, I see.”

Grant stepped closer to Cass. “Jordan helped me disappear. Helped me rebuild. Helped me understand that Bay City is a chessboard—and the Cory legacy is the king.”

Cass’s voice sharpened. “You’re using Jake and Vicky’s daughters as pawns.”

Grant’s expression hardened. “I’m using them as leverage. The Cory documents, Cass. Hand them over.”

Jordan added, “You should know, Cass—Grant isn’t the only one who wants them. The heir is more valuable than you realize.”

Cass’s pulse hammered. “You know who the heir is.”

Jordan’s eyes gleamed. “Of course. And once we have the documents, we’ll have everything we need to control her.”

Cass’s breath caught. “Alli Fowler is off limits.”

Grant laughed. “Oh, Cass. You’re still so naïve.”

Jordan stepped forward. “The Cory empire is vulnerable. Alli Fowler is the key to unlocking it. And once she’s under our influence, Bay City will belong to us.”

Cass tightened his grip on the briefcase. “You’re not getting these documents.”

Grant’s smile vanished.

Jordan’s expression cooled.

Grant whispered, “Then the twins die.”

Cass’s heart slammed against his ribs.

Morgan stepped out fully now, voice sharp. “Grant—don’t do this.”

Grant turned, eyes wild. “I lost everything! My son, my career, my life! Bay City took it all from me. Now I’m taking it back.”

Jordan placed a hand on Grant’s shoulder. “Focus.”

Grant inhaled shakily, then pointed at Cass. “The documents. Now.”

Cass slowly set the briefcase on the ground.

Grant stepped forward.

Morgan tensed.

Jake and Vicky watched from the car, breathless.

Cass said quietly, “Grant… look at me.”

Grant paused.

Cass continued, voice steady. “You don’t have to do this. You can walk away. You can start over.”

Grant’s eyes flickered—pain, rage, desperation.

Then he whispered, “I already started over.”

Jordan reached for the briefcase.

A sudden sound cut through the air.

A baby’s cry.

Grant spun around.

Cass’s blood ran cold.

Morgan whispered, “No…”

Jordan’s smile sharpened.

From the office building, a shadow moved.

Someone was holding Bridget and Michele.

Not Grant.

Not Jordan.

A third figure.

A woman.

She stepped into the light.

Cass’s breath caught.

Jake and Vicky screamed inside the car.

Morgan swore under his breath.

Rachel Cory, watching through a remote feed Morgan had set up, gasped.

Amanda dropped to her knees.

Alli Fowler whispered, “No… no…”

The woman holding the twins smiled coldly.

Cindy Harrison.

Grant’sex-wifee. Jake’s former tormentor. A woman who had faked her death more than once. A woman who had always been two steps ahead of everyone.

Cindy rocked the babies gently.

“Hello, Bay City,” she purred. “Miss me?”

Grant smiled, triumphant.

Jordan folded his arms.

Cass felt the world collapse.

Cindy whispered, “Let’s finish what we started.”

caldwtd: A bit of sweet in a world of violence. I enjoyed this story, and angst of each character believing they should not have these feelings towards each other. I did struggle with her seeming to be a bad ass, but yet was always so negative about herself, her negativity was a bit too much for my liking, I...
