Chapter 1

“The Brother of the Madman”

A dark, character-driven Buffy/Angel Season 5 post “Not Fade Away” fanfiction scene centered on Kralik’s brother, Bill Jesse, who has captured Buffy after the fall of Wolfram & Hart.

Timeline: Angel Season 5, immediately after “Not Fade Away”

Premise: Kralik’s brother, Bill Jesse, survived the Watchers’ purge. He’s smarter than Kralik, colder, and he’s been waiting decades for a chance to finish what his brother started.

SCENE: The Ruins of Los Angeles

Smoke still curled upward from the cratered streets where Angel, Spike, and Illyria made their last stand. The city felt hollow—like something enormous had inhaled and never exhaled again.

Buffy came alone.

She’d felt the shift. The moment Angel’s team made their suicidal charge, something in the Slayer line shuddered. A warning. A pull. A whisper of go.

She arrived too late.

Bodies. Demon ash. Blood. The smell of magic burned raw.

And then— A voice behind her.

“You’re late, Slayer.”

Buffy spun, stake in hand.

The man standing there looked nothing like Kralik. Kralik had been a slobbering, twitching nightmare. This man was clean-cut, calm, dressed like a Watcher who’d stepped out of a funeral.

But his eyes— His eyes were Kralik’s.

“Who are you?” Not a question. A threat.

He smiled politely.

“Bill Jesse. Kralik was my brother.”

Buffy’s grip tightened. “I killed your brother.”

“Yes,” he said, stepping closer, “and I thank you for it. He was… messy. Impatient. I’m not.”

Before she could strike, something slammed into her spine—cold metal, enchanted, paralyzing. She hit the ground hard.

Bill crouched beside her, studying her like a specimen.

“You Slayers. You think the Cruciamentum was the worst thing the Watchers ever did.” He brushed hair from her face with clinical detachment. “My brother was only one experiment. I was another.”

Buffy tried to move. Nothing responded.

“What do you want?”

Bill’s smile widened.

“To finish his work. To break you. Properly.”

He lifted a small glass vial—glowing, pulsing, unmistakably mystical.

“Angel’s city is falling. His friends are dying. And you, Buffy Summers, are going to watch it all from the inside of your own mind.”

He injected the glowing liquid into her neck.

The world shattered.

SCENE: Inside the Nightmare

Buffy stood in a twisted version of Los Angeles—streets looping into impossible angles, buildings melting into shadow. Every sound echoed as if it came from underwater.

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

Angel. Bleeding. Broken. Accusing.

“You weren’t here.”

Another figure—Spike. Burned. Dust clinging to his skin like frost.

“We needed you, love.”

Buffy staggered back.

“This isn’t real.”

Bill’s voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere.

“It’s real enough to hurt.”

SCENE: The Real World

Buffy’s body hung suspended in a containment rig—chains etched with runes, a spell circle beneath her feet. Bill Jesse walked around her, adjusting instruments, humming softly.

“My brother tried brute force. I prefer psychology.”

He tapped a monitor showing Buffy’s nightmare.

“You Slayers are so strong. But grief? Guilt? That’s the poison that kills you slowly.”

He leaned close to her unconscious face.

“And when you break, Slayer… I will make you my masterpiece.”

jo987_123: The story could be longer, the ending feels like you've missed the last episode of a series that is never going to be shown again and no recording of it exists anywhere. A lot of continuity errors, she leaves her car in town/at college and then it's at home the next morning. She helped him out of his...
