Book 1 - Episode 1: The Letter in the Doorstep

BOOK I — Episode 1: “The Letter on the Doorstep”

Two years after Not Fade Away, Cleveland breathed like a wounded animal—slow, uneasy, waiting for the next strike. The Hellmouth here wasn’t as theatrical as Sunnydale’s had been. No gaping crater, no collapsing high school, no apocalyptic fireworks. Just a quiet, constant hum beneath the city, like a heartbeat that didn’t belong to anything human.

Buffy had learned to sleep through it. Or pretend to.

Willow and Dawn had taken the upstairs bedrooms in the little rental house on Lorain Avenue. Buffy took the downstairs room because she didn’t want to hear Dawn cry at night. Dawn thought she hid it well. She didn’t. Buffy didn’t tell her.

They were all pretending in their own ways.

Andrew’s confession had detonated everything.

Spike alive. Angel alive. A battle in Los Angeles. Giles knowing. Giles lying. Giles choosing to lie.

Buffy had fired him without raising her voice. That was how Dawn knew it was real.

Now, Cleveland was their attempt at normalcy. A doomed attempt, but an attempt.

Buffy patrolled alone most nights. Willow was rebuilding her magic after the Rome fiasco. Dawn was trying to be a college student again. Buffy was trying to be a Slayer who didn’t wake up expecting to see Spike’s ghost sitting on the edge of her bed.

She didn’t go looking for him. Not because she didn’t want to. But because Andrew had said Spike didn’t want her to know.

That hurt more than anything Giles had done.

Tonight, she returned from patrol just before dawn, boots muddy, knuckles bruised, hair damp from the mist rising off Lake Erie. She climbed the porch steps, already reaching for the door—

—and froze.

A folded piece of parchment lay on the welcome mat.

Not paper. Parchment. Old. Expensive. Wrong.

Buffy crouched, senses flaring. No scent she recognized. No magical residue Willow would’ve felt. Just… something oily beneath the surface. Something familiar in a way that made her stomach twist.

She opened it.

The handwriting was elegant. Precise. Cruel.

Slayer, you failed to kill me once. I’ve taken something of yours to repay the debt. Come alone. Or she dies again. —Vhal’Torak

Buffy’s breath stopped.

Vhal’Torak.

A demon she’d fought in Sunnydale. A demon she’d barely survived. A demon she’d believed destroyed when the Hellmouth collapsed.

And then she saw the second line.

She dies again.

Buffy’s pulse hammered.

No. No, no, no.

She flipped the parchment over.

A photograph was tucked inside.

Drusilla.

Chained. Beaten. Eyes wide with terror—real terror, not the dreamy madness Buffy remembered. Her face was different. Clear. Lucid. Sane.

And her eyes—God—her eyes were full of a soul.

Buffy staggered back against the door.

Dru. Souled. Sane. And captured by a demon who hated Buffy enough to cross dimensions to get revenge.

Buffy didn’t wake Willow. Didn’t wake Dawn. Didn’t leave a note.

She grabbed a sword, a stake, and the scythe.

And she went.

The Demon Slave Ring — Cleveland Underground

The entrance was beneath an abandoned textile mill. Buffy kicked the rusted door off its hinges and descended into the dark.

The smell hit her first—blood, sweat, despair. Then the sound—chains rattling, muffled cries, the wet thud of fists hitting flesh.

Buffy didn’t hesitate.

She tore through the first wave of demons—scaled brutes with serrated claws. She moved like she had something to prove. Like she had something to punish. Like she had something to save.

She reached the central chamber.

Drusilla hung from iron shackles, her white gown torn, her dark hair matted with blood. But her eyes—her eyes were clear. Focused. Terrified.

“Buffy…” Dru whispered. “You came.”

Buffy sliced through the chains.

“I’m getting you out,” she said, voice shaking.

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

Vhal’Torak stepped from the shadows—towering, armored in bone, eyes burning with old hatred.

“You took everything from me, Slayer,” he hissed. “Now I take what you cherish.”

Buffy stepped in front of Dru.

“You want me,” she said. “Come get me.”

The fight was brutal. Vicious. Close.

Buffy bled. Buffy broke bones. Buffy kept getting up.

And when she finally drove the scythe through Vhal’Torak’s chest, she whispered:

“That was for her.”

The demon collapsed, dissolving into ash.

Buffy turned to Dru.

The vampire trembled, soul flickering behind her eyes like a candle in a storm.

“You saved me,” Dru whispered. “You saved the monster who hurt you.”

“You’re not a monster,” Buffy said. “Not anymore.”

Dru sobbed—real, human sobs—and collapsed into Buffy’s arms.

The New Scooby

Willow cried when she saw Dru’s soul. Dawn hugged her. Buffy made her tea. And Xander—arriving the next morning with donuts and a suitcase—took one look at Dru and felt something shift in his chest.

Protectiveness. Recognition. Something he didn’t have a name for yet.

Dru looked at him like he was sunlight.

The Decision

Three days later, Buffy stood at the bus station with a duffel bag and the scythe strapped to her back.

Willow hugged her. Dawn kissed her cheek. Dru squeezed her hands and whispered, “Find him. He’s waiting.”

Buffy boarded the bus to Los Angeles.

She was done waiting.

She was done hurting.

She was going to find Spike.

And she was going to ask him why he didn’t want her to know he was alive.
