“Shadows of Blood and Moonlight”
The night air felt wrong.
Buffy Summers stood still in the cemetery, stake in hand, her instincts screaming. It wasn’t the usual “vamp lurking behind a crypt” wrong. This was older. Colder. As if something had stepped out of a different century and refused to leave.
Behind her, Spike lit a cigarette, squinting into the dark.
“Feel that, Slayer?” he muttered. “Like the air just got… posh and miserable.”
Buffy frowned. “That’s not a thing.”
“Is now.”
A slow, deliberate tap echoed across the stone path.
Not the shuffle of a fledgling. Not the predatory silence of a seasoned killer.
This was… measured.
Aristocratic.
From the shadows emerged a man dressed entirely out of time—dark coat, high collar, his presence commanding in a way that made even Buffy take a half-step back.
His eyes settled on her.
Hungry.
Not for blood.
For her.
“I have searched across oceans… across centuries,” he said, voice smooth and heavy with something ancient. “And at last… I have found you.”
Buffy blinked. “Okay, wow. That is a lot for a first introduction.”
Spike stiffened beside her.
And for the first time since Buffy had known him—
He looked… unsettled.
The Name That Changes Everything
Giles adjusted his glasses, staring at the old text like it might bite him.
“Barnabas Collins,” he read slowly. “An 18th-century vampire… cursed, resurrected multiple times. Obsessed with recreating a lost love.”
Willow leaned in. “So… romantic? Or super creepy?”
“Profoundly the latter,” Giles said.
Buffy crossed her arms. “Cool. Love that for me.”
Spike hadn’t said a word.
Buffy noticed.
“Okay, bleach boy, what’s with the brooding? That’s usually my thing.”
Spike exhaled sharply, jaw tight.
“I’ve heard of him.”
Everyone froze.
Giles looked up. “You have?”
Spike nodded slowly. “Stories. Whispers among the old ones. Vampires who’ve been around long enough… they talk.”
“And?” Buffy pressed.
Spike’s voice dropped.
“They don’t talk about him like he’s one of us.”
A beat.
“They talk like he’s something… worse.”
A Bride for Eternity
Barnabas watched from the shadows of the Bronze.
Music. Lights. Laughter.
So different from the world he had known.
But she…
She was the same.
The strength. The fire. The defiance.
It burned in her just as it had before.
“Josette…” he whispered.
Only this time—
She was called Buffy.
And this time…
He would not lose her.
The First Confrontation
Buffy didn’t wait.
She found him standing in the cemetery again, as if he belonged there.
“Okay, Count Dracula’s moodier cousin,” she said, twirling her stake. “We need to talk about boundaries. Specifically: mine.”
Barnabas turned, calm and composed.
“You fear me.”
Buffy smirked. “I slay things scarier than you before breakfast.”
“You misunderstand,” he said softly. “I would never harm you.”
“Yeah, they all say that right before the attempted biting.”
Barnabas stepped closer.
Spike appeared instantly between them, shoving Barnabas back.
“Back off, mate.”
For the first time—
Barnabas’s composure cracked.
His eyes narrowed.
“William.”
Buffy blinked. “Wait—hold up. What?”
Spike went rigid.
“You know him?” Buffy demanded.
Barnabas tilted his head slightly.
“A wayward child of darkness,” he said. “Turned in chaos… lacking discipline.”
Spike’s face darkened. “You don’t get to judge me.”
Buffy looked between them. “Okay, I’m gonna need a lot more context here.”
The Connection
Later, under pressure (and Buffy’s very pointy stake), Spike finally admitted it.
“There’s… a line,” he said. “Not a bloodline like humans. But influence. Power. The way some vampires… shape others.”
Giles leaned forward. “You believe Barnabas is—?”
Spike nodded reluctantly.
“One of the first of a kind who… changed the rules. Not a Master, not like the ones you’ve faced. Something older. More… deliberate.”
Willow frowned. “So like vampire aristocracy?”
“Yeah,” Spike muttered. “And I’ve got just enough of that in me to recognize it.”
Buffy’s eyes widened. “So he’s like your… creepy vampire grandparent?”
Spike shot her a look. “Don’t say it like that.”
“You just said it like that.”
Love or Obsession
Barnabas approached Buffy again—this time not with force, but with quiet certainty.
“You feel it,” he said. “The connection between us.”
Buffy shook her head. “What I feel is deeply weirded out.”
“You are her,” he insisted. “Reborn. Returned to me.”
“I’m not your anything,” Buffy snapped. “I’m not your lost love, your destiny, your whatever gothic romance fantasy you’ve got going on.”
Barnabas’s expression softened… almost painfully.
“Then allow me,” he said, “to make you remember.”
He reached for her.
Spike intercepted him again—this time with a punch.
“Not happening.”
Barnabas barely flinched.
But his eyes darkened.
“You would defy me… for her?”
Spike didn’t hesitate.
“Yeah.”
The Choice
The final battle wasn’t just about strength.
It was about will.
Barnabas could overpower most things in Sunnydale—but Buffy wasn’t most things.
And she wasn’t Josette.
“I choose who I am,” Buffy said, circling him. “Not you. Not fate. Not some centuries-old obsession.”
Barnabas faltered.
Just for a second.
Spike saw it.
Buffy saw it.
And that was enough.
The End… Or Not
Barnabas stood at the edge of defeat, staring at Buffy—not with rage, but something far more dangerous.
Longing.
“You are not her,” he said quietly.
Buffy held her stake steady. “Finally, we agree on something.”
A long silence.
Then—
Barnabas stepped back into the shadows.
“I will not force what must be given freely,” he said. “But time… is patient.”
And just like that—
He was gone.
Aftermath
Buffy exhaled. “So… that happened.”
Willow looked uneasy. “He didn’t dust.”
Giles nodded grimly. “Which means he may return.”
Buffy groaned. “Great. Vampire stalker with a reincarnation complex.”
She glanced at Spike.
“You okay?”
Spike shrugged, but there was something unsettled in his eyes.
“Yeah,” he said. “Just… don’t like knowing there’s something out there that makes me look normal.”
Buffy smirked. “Don’t worry. You still don’t.”
He almost smiled.
Final Note
Somewhere beyond Sunnydale…
Barnabas Collins watched the moon.
Waiting.
Because unlike other monsters—
He didn’t just hunt.
He loved.
And that made him far more dangerous.
