Chapter 1 — The Man in the Black Suit
Rain hammered the glass roof of Meridian City like thousands of impatient fingers.
Mara Vale stood beneath the golden lights of the Grand Meridian Hotel, holding a champagne glass she had no intention of drinking. Across the ballroom, ministers, judges, billionaires and men who were rich enough to make laws instead of obeying them laughed beneath crystal chandeliers.
She had come for one reason: to steal a file.
The file belonged to Aurelius Group, the corporation that had quietly bought half the city’s waterfront. Its chairman, Victor Hale, had spent years pretending to be a respectable businessman while families disappeared from the neighborhoods he wanted to redevelop.
Mara knew because her father had been one of those families.
She slipped toward the private corridor.
Then a voice spoke behind her.
“You’re holding that glass like a weapon.”
Mara turned.
The man standing there looked as if the storm outside had been tailored into a suit. Tall, immaculate, calm. His black hair was swept back, and his eyes were so dark they seemed almost amused by the world.
“Maybe it is,” Mara said.
He glanced at the champagne flute. “Poor weapon. Too fragile.”
“Then I suppose you should be afraid of me.”
His mouth curved.
“My name is Adrian Cross.”
“I didn’t ask.”
“No. But you were going to.”
Before Mara could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
Victor Hale entered.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Mara noticed.
“Do you know him?” she whispered.
“I know what he does.”
“And?”
“I’ve spent seven years making men like him regret believing they’re untouchable.”
Mara stared at him.
“Who are you?”
Adrian looked toward the corridor she had been trying to enter.
“Tonight?” he said. “Your accomplice.”
Ten minutes later, the two strangers walked into Aurelius Group’s private archive together.
Neither knew that by sunrise, one would have a stolen ledger, the other would have an enemy, and both would have become targets of the most powerful criminal network in Meridian City.
