Chapter 1
CHAPTER 1
The rain had just stopped when Elena Carter stepped out of the airport.
For the first time in two years, she was home.
She stood beneath the airport lights with one hand wrapped around the handle of her suitcase and the other holding her phone. Her dark coat was still damp from the rain, and a few strands of her hair had escaped from the loose ponytail she had tied before landing.
She looked around and smiled.
Everything felt familiar.
The noise.
The traffic.
The cold evening air.
Even the smell of coffee coming from a small café near the entrance reminded her of home.
She had spent two years studying in America, far away from her family. She had worked hard, completed her degree, made friends, and built a life of her own.
But no matter how independent she became, there was still one place she wanted to return to.
Home.
Her phone vibrated.
Dad: Where are you?
Elena smiled.
She quickly typed:
Elena: I just left the airport. I’m waiting for the driver.
A reply appeared almost immediately.
Dad: Stay inside the airport. Don’t go anywhere alone.
Elena sighed.
“Still the same.”
Her father, Richard Carter, had always been protective.
Sometimes too protective.
He was one of the most successful businessmen in the country, and his name was known everywhere. He owned several companies, luxury hotels, properties, and investments across different countries.
But at home, he wasn’t the powerful businessman everyone feared.
He was simply Elena’s father.
And he worried about her constantly.
Elena put her phone away.
She waited.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Then twenty.
Still no driver.
She tried calling him.
No answer.
“Seriously?”
She looked at the time.
8:47 p.m.
She called again.
Nothing.
A black luxury sedan suddenly stopped in front of her.
The passenger window slowly lowered.
A man in a black suit looked at her.
“Miss Carter?”
Elena stepped closer.
“Yes?”
“Your father sent me.”
She frowned.
“My driver?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Elena looked around.
She had expected to see the familiar driver her father had used for years.
But this man was a stranger.
Still, she was exhausted after the flight.
“Okay.”
She put her suitcase in the trunk.
Before getting inside, she hesitated.
Something felt strange.
But she couldn’t explain why.
She opened the back door.
“Thank you.”
The man nodded.
Elena got inside.
The door closed.
The car drove away.
For the first fifteen minutes, Elena didn’t say anything.
She watched the city through the window.
Buildings passed by.
Streetlights blurred into long golden lines.
She opened her phone and checked her messages.
Nothing from her father.
She frowned.
Then she noticed something.
The car wasn’t taking the usual route home.
Elena sat up straight.
“Excuse me?”
The driver didn’t answer.
She looked through the windshield.
The familiar streets had disappeared.
They were now driving through an unfamiliar area.
“Where are we going?”
Silence.
Elena’s stomach tightened.
She checked her phone.
No signal.
“What is happening?”
She tried calling her father.
The call didn’t connect.
She immediately reached for the door handle.
Locked.
Her breathing became faster.
“Stop the car.”
Nothing.
“Stop the car!”
The driver continued driving.
Elena grabbed the back of the front seat.
“Who are you?”
The man finally spoke.
“Please remain calm.”
“Calm?”
Her voice shook with anger.
“You just took me somewhere I don’t recognize!”
No answer.
The car turned onto a narrow road surrounded by trees.
Elena stared outside.
There were no houses.
No shops.
No pedestrians.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Her heart pounded.
She tried the door again.
Locked.
Then she heard the sound of another vehicle behind them.
A black SUV was following.
Elena knew something was wrong.
She didn’t know where they were going.
She didn’t know who these people were.
And she had no idea why they had taken her.
Twenty minutes later, enormous iron gates appeared ahead.
The gates opened.
The car drove through.
Elena stared.
Behind the gates stood an enormous mansion.
It looked less like a home and more like a private palace.
The property was surrounded by tall stone walls, cameras, security guards, and huge gardens.
The car stopped at the entrance.
Elena didn’t move.
The driver stepped out.
Two security guards approached.
The back door opened.
“Miss Carter.”
Elena immediately moved to the opposite side.
“Don’t come near me.”
One of the guards stopped.
“Please come inside.”
“No.”
She stepped out of the car and looked around.
“Where am I?”
Nobody answered.
“Who brought me here?”
Still nothing.
Elena turned toward the gate.
She started walking.
Then she heard footsteps behind her.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
She stopped.
A young man was walking down the mansion’s grand staircase.
He was dressed completely in black.
His expression was cold.
His dark hair was slightly messy, and his eyes were fixed directly on Elena.
The guards immediately moved aside.
Elena stared at him.
“Who are you?”
The man stopped several feet away.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he said,
“Ethan Blackwood.”
The name meant nothing to Elena.
She shook her head.
“I don’t know you.”
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“I know.”
Elena’s confusion turned into anger.
“I want to go home.”
“You can’t.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“You’re staying here.”
“Who do you think you are?”
Ethan’s expression didn’t change.
“The person who brought you here.”
Elena stared at him.
“You kidnapped me.”
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
Her face went pale.
“Why?”
Ethan looked at her for several seconds.
Then he said quietly,
“Because of your father.”
Elena froze.
“My father?”
“Richard Carter.”
“What does my father have to do with this?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Everything.”
Elena shook her head.
“No. Whatever problem you have with my father, you need to deal with him. Not me.”
“I tried.”
“And?”
“He refused to listen.”
“So you kidnapped me?”
Ethan’s voice remained calm.
“You’re the one person he will never ignore.”
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
“You are insane.”
“Maybe.”
He turned toward the mansion.
“Take her inside.”
Elena immediately stepped backward.
“No.”
Two guards approached.
She raised her voice.
“Don’t touch me!”
They stopped.
Ethan looked back at her.
Elena’s eyes were filled with anger and fear.
“Listen to me,” she said. “I don’t know what happened between you and my father, but I had nothing to do with it.”
Ethan studied her face.
“I know.”
That answer confused her.
“If you know that, then why am I here?”
“Because sometimes the only way to reach someone’s heart...”
He paused.
“...is through the person they love most.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know my father.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“I knew him before you ever knew what his name meant.”
He walked past her.
“Take her to the east wing.”
Elena watched him disappear inside the mansion.
For the first time in her life, she felt completely powerless.
THE EAST WING
The bedroom was enormous.
A huge bed stood in the center.
There was a private bathroom, a wardrobe filled with clothes, a sitting area, and enormous windows overlooking the gardens.
Everything was expensive.
Everything was beautiful.
And everything felt like a cage.
Elena stood near the window.
She looked down.
Security guards were everywhere.
She tried the door.
Locked.
She tried again.
Nothing.
She grabbed her phone.
Still no signal.
“Great.”
She threw herself onto the edge of the bed.
Her mind raced.
Why had Ethan Blackwood taken her?
Who was he?
And what had happened between him and her father?
She knew her father had enemies.
Every powerful businessman did.
But she had never imagined that one of them would come after her.
A knock came at the door.
Elena stood up.
The door opened.
A woman in her forties entered carrying a tray of food.
“You should eat.”
“I’m not hungry.”
The woman placed the tray on the table.
“My name is Mrs. Wilson. I manage the house.”
“I don’t care.”
Mrs. Wilson looked at her sympathetically.
“You should eat something.”
“Why are you helping him?”
“I’m not.”
“Then help me leave.”
The woman lowered her eyes.
“I can’t.”
Elena’s voice softened.
“Please.”
Mrs. Wilson looked at her.
“I truly am sorry.”
Then she left.
The door locked again.
Elena stared at it.
A tear slowly rolled down her cheek.
She wiped it away.
“No.”
She whispered to herself.
“I’m not going to cry.”
She stood up.
She wasn’t going to sit there and wait.
She needed a way out.
THE FIRST ESCAPE
Two hours later, the mansion had become quiet.
Elena waited.
She carefully opened the balcony door.
Cold air entered the room.
She looked down.
The balcony was several meters above the ground.
But there was a large tree close to the side of the mansion.
If she could reach it, she might be able to climb down.
She looked around.
No guards.
She tied two bedsheets together.
Slowly, she lowered them over the balcony.
Her hands shook.
“This has to work.”
She climbed over the railing.
One foot.
Then the other.
She held the sheets tightly.
She was almost halfway down when—
“Elena.”
She froze.
That voice.
Ethan.
She slowly looked upward.
He stood on the balcony above her.
His arms were crossed.
His expression was unreadable.
Elena’s face turned red with anger.
“Don’t move.”
Ethan stared at the makeshift rope.
“You could get hurt.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
“I want to go home!”
“I know.”
“Then let me go!”
Ethan didn’t answer.
Elena climbed back onto the balcony.
The moment her feet touched the ground, she turned toward him.
“You can’t keep me here forever.”
“I don’t intend to.”
“Then open the gate.”
“Not yet.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“You think you can control everyone because you’re rich?”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I know what power can do.”
“Apparently you also know what cruelty can do.”
For the first time, Ethan looked genuinely affected.
But it lasted only a moment.
He turned away.
“Get some sleep.”
Elena stared at him.
“I hate you.”
Ethan stopped.
He didn’t look back.
“I didn’t bring you here to be liked.”
He walked away.
The door closed.
Elena stood alone on the balcony.
She looked toward the dark sky.
She didn’t know it yet, but that night was only the beginning.
TEN YEARS AGO
Across the city, Richard Carter stood inside his private office.
His hands were shaking.
His assistant stood across from him.
“Sir, we’ve searched everywhere.”
Richard didn’t answer.
“Elena’s phone was turned off shortly after she left the airport.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“What about the driver?”
“Missing.”
Richard’s face became pale.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a man’s voice.
“Mr. Carter.”
Richard froze.
He knew that voice.
He hadn’t heard it in years.
But he could never forget it.
“Ethan.”
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You remember me.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe.”
“If you touch her—”
“Relax.”
Ethan’s voice remained calm.
“I didn’t hurt her.”
Richard clenched his fist.
“Why are you doing this?”
“You know why.”
“I already told you. I had nothing to do with what happened to your family.”
“You lied.”
“I didn’t.”
“Ten years ago, my father trusted you.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“We were partners.”
“No.”
Ethan’s voice became colder.
“You were supposed to be family.”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“Then my father lost everything.”
“It wasn’t my fault.”
“And somehow...”
Ethan paused.
“...you became richer.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You’re blaming me for something I didn’t do.”
“I’ll find the truth.”
“And if you don’t?”
“Then your daughter stays with me until you give me the answers I want.”
Richard’s voice broke with anger.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Ethan laughed quietly.
“Maybe.”
The call ended.
Richard stood completely still.
His assistant looked at him.
“Sir?”
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
“Ethan Blackwood has Elena.”
The assistant’s face changed.
“What are we going to do?”
Richard looked out through the window.
For ten years, he had tried to bury the past.
He had hoped it would remain buried forever.
But now the past had returned.
And it had taken his daughter with it.
“We bring her home.”
THE FOLLOWING MORNING
Elena woke up early.
She hadn’t slept much.
She walked toward the window.
The mansion looked peaceful in the morning sunlight.
But she knew better.
She was still trapped.
A knock came at the door.
Before she could answer, Ethan entered.
He was holding a folder.
Elena immediately crossed her arms.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“I already told you. I don’t know anything.”
“Then we’ll start with what you do know.”
He placed the folder on the table.
Elena looked at it.
“What is that?”
“Your father’s history.”
She hesitated.
Then she opened it.
Photographs.
Business documents.
Newspaper articles.
Old company records.
And one photograph made her stop.
It showed two young men standing together.
One was Ethan’s father.
The other was Richard Carter.
They were smiling.
They looked like close friends.
Elena stared at the photograph.
“I’ve never seen this.”
“I know.”
She turned another page.
A headline caught her attention.
BLACKWOOD INDUSTRIES COLLAPSES AFTER FINANCIAL SCANDAL
She looked at Ethan.
“What happened?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
“My father lost everything.”
Elena looked back at the documents.
“And you think my father caused it.”
“I don’t think.”
Ethan’s eyes met hers.
“I know.”
Elena shook her head.
“Then prove it.”
Ethan went silent.
She continued.
“If you have evidence, show me.”
“I will.”
“And if you don’t?”
His expression hardened.
“Then you’ll know.”
Elena closed the folder.
“I still don’t believe you.”
Ethan nodded.
“Good.”
She looked surprised.
“Good?”
“I don’t want you to believe me because I’m telling you something.”
He picked up the folder.
“I want you to see the truth yourself.”
He turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“One more thing.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
“Your father is already looking for you.”
Her heart sank.
“Is he okay?”
Ethan looked at her for a moment.
“He’s angry.”
“Of course he is.”
“He’ll come for you.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“And when he does?”
Ethan opened the door.
“Then the war begins.”
The door closed.
Elena stood alone in the enormous room.
She looked down at the photograph again.
Two men.
Two families.
One forgotten betrayal.
And a secret that had survived for ten years.
She had been brought into Ethan Blackwood’s world because of her father.
But she was beginning to realize something terrifying.
Maybe she wasn’t just a hostage.
Maybe she was the missing piece of a mystery that nobody had been able to solve.
And somewhere beneath all the anger, Ethan Blackwood knew something she didn’t.
Something that could destroy both their families.
To be continued...
