The Storm
The night Kade discovered the truth about himself, the sky turned completely black.
Not the normal darkness of night.
Something was wrong.
The wind had suddenly stopped. The streets of Lagos were unusually quiet, and even the usual sounds of cars and generators seemed distant.
Kade stood beside the window of his family's small apartment, staring at the sky.
“Why is everywhere so quiet?” he muttered.
His mother looked up from the kitchen.
“Kade.”
He turned.
“Go away from that window.”
“Why?”
“Just do it.”
There was something in her voice that made him stop arguing.
Kade stepped away.
Then—
BOOOOOOM!
Thunder exploded across the sky.
The entire building shook.
Kade jumped.
His mother dropped the cup in her hand.
For a few seconds, neither of them moved.
Then another thunderclap came.
BOOM!
This time, Kade felt something strange.
A sharp sensation travelled through his arm.
He grabbed his wrist.
“Mum…”
She looked at him.
Her face suddenly went pale.
“What?”
“My arm.”
Kade pulled up his sleeve.
A strange symbol had appeared on his skin.
It looked like a crack shaped like a lightning bolt.
His mother stared at it.
“No…”
“What is it?”
She didn't answer.
“Mum?”
She stepped backward.
“Kade… where did you get that?”
“I don't know! It just appeared!”
Another flash of lightning illuminated the entire room.
For one brief moment, Kade saw something outside the window.
A figure.
Standing on the rooftop opposite their building.
Tall.
Completely motionless.
Watching him.
Kade blinked.
The figure disappeared.
“Mum, someone was outside!”
His mother grabbed his arm.
“Don't look outside.”
“But—”
“Don't look outside!”
Kade had never heard fear in his mother's voice like that before.
Then the lights went out.
Everything became dark.
A low rumbling sound came from the sky.
Kade's heart began pounding.
And then he heard a voice.
Not from the room.
Not from outside.
From inside his head.
“My son…”
Kade froze.
His eyes widened.
“Mum…”
She looked at him.
“What?”
Kade swallowed.
“Someone just called me.”
His mother stared at him.
Then tears slowly appeared in her eyes.
Because she already knew.
The thunder struck.
KRAAAAAACK!
A massive bolt of lightning came down toward the building.
Kade raised his hand instinctively.
And the lightning stopped.
Right above him.
For several seconds, the entire room glowed white.
Kade stared at his hand in disbelief.
His mother whispered:
“Your father has awakened.”
Kade looked at her.
“My father?”
She had spent seventeen years refusing to talk about him.
Now she finally whispered the words Kade had never expected to hear.
“Your father was not a man.”
