Prologue/story summary
It was supposed to be a home.
At least, that was what Emma had once believed.
A home was supposed to be the place where a child ran when she was frightened. A place where someone noticed when she was hungry. A place where tears were wiped away instead of punished.
But Emma had learned very early that not every house was a home.
Sometimes, four walls could become a prison.
Emma was only eight when she lost her parents.
She had been too young to understand why the adults around her suddenly spoke in whispers, why people looked at her with pity, or why the house that had once been filled with her mother's laughter had become painfully quiet.
After her parents' death, Emma was taken in by her mother's family. Everyone told her she was lucky.
She believed them. For a while.
Then the kindness disappeared.
The smiles became cold.
The words became cruel.
And eventually, Emma understood that she had been welcomed into the house not because they loved her, but because they had nowhere else to put her.
She was fifteen when she finally stopped asking why.
Why was she treated differently?
Why could everyone else eat while she watched?
Why was she punished for things she hadn't done?
Why was she expected to serve people who would never consider serving her?
Why did the family that shared her blood seem to hate her existence?
Emma learned to keep quiet.
She learned to hide her tears.
She learned that complaining only made things worse.
And when there was no food for her, she learned to sleep with an empty stomach.
There were days when she was given nothing but leftovers.
Sometimes not even that.
Once, she went several days without proper food. By the time someone finally gave her something to eat, she was so weak that she could barely stand.
The food had been meant for the pets.
Emma ate it anyway.
Hunger didn't care about pride.
Neither did survival.
For years, she endured.
She tried to become the girl they wanted.
She worked harder.
She spoke less.
She apologized even when she wasn't wrong.
She tried everything.
Nothing changed.
Then, one day, Emma ran.
She didn't have a destination.
She didn't have money.
She didn't even have a proper plan.
She only knew one thing.
She couldn't stay.
So the girl who had once belonged to a wealthy family found herself wandering the streets with nowhere to sleep.
For the first time, she had no roof over her head.
No family.
No security.
No one to call her own.
But somehow, among strangers, Emma found something she had never received from her own relatives.
Kindness.
She met people who shared their food with her.
People who listened.
People who noticed when she was hurting.
And eventually, she told them everything.
They listened to the story of a little girl who had lost her parents and then lost almost everything else along with them.
They saw the scars her family had left behind.
And they became angry.
Very angry.
Because Emma's story didn't end with a runaway girl living on the streets.
There was something else.
Something her family had desperately tried to hide.
Emma's parents had left behind property.
Property that legally belonged to Emma.
And someone had taken it.
As the truth began to surface, the family that had once treated Emma as though she were worthless suddenly had something to fear.
Her friends began asking questions.
Evidence began appearing.
The police became involved.
And the people responsible were eventually forced to answer for child abuse, murder, and the unlawful takeover of Emma's inheritance.
But justice came with one devastating problem.
Emma was nowhere to be found. The victim didn't appear in the court room to witness her justice being served.
The people who had finally decided to fight for her were left searching for the girl who had spent years believing that nobody would ever fight for her. They knew the devastating truth tho... She really is gone
And somewhere out there... If not in person but in spirit
Emma was supposedly still alive. Or at least, that's what they hoped.
Because sometimes, the hardest part of finding justice isn't proving what happened.
It's finding the person who survived it.
