This is a modern world populated entirely by beastmen—people who live ordinary human lives while carrying the instincts, senses, and physical traits of their animal species.

Predators and prey attend the same schools, work in the same cities, share the same streets, and live under the same laws.

But civilization doesn't erase instinct.

A deer may still hear a predator's footsteps before anyone else does.

A squirrel may still puff up when frightened.

A wolf may still feel the ancient weight of territory and protection.

A fox may still hide his true intentions behind a clever smile.

And sometimes, the hardest thing isn't fighting instinct.

It's learning to understand it.

🍃 THE HEART OF THIS STORY

At the center of the story is Xie Zhixia, a white-tailed deer who enters Apex Academy already knowing that he doesn't quite belong.

The academy is academically prestigious—but it is also overwhelmingly dominated by predator species.

For Zhixia, every unfamiliar scent, sudden movement, growl from across the hallway, and crowded classroom can trigger instincts he has spent years learning to manage.

But Zhixia isn't a helpless character.

He is cautious.

He is sensitive.

He is sometimes afraid.

And he is still brave.

His journey isn't about becoming fearless.

It's about realizing that being afraid doesn't mean being weak.

Then there's Jiang Hyesok.

A gray wolf.

Quiet. Disciplined. Intimidating.

The kind of student whose presence can make an entire hallway go silent.

But reputations rarely tell the whole story.

Hyesok has his own struggles with expectations, instinct, responsibility, and the way other people perceive him.

His journey is about learning that protecting someone doesn't mean deciding everything for them.

Their relationship will be a true slow burn.

No instant declarations.

No sudden transformation.

A remembered detail.

A quiet conversation.

A Eurasian red squirrel with a fluffy tail, endless energy, dramatic reactions, and approximately zero ability to remain calm around suspicious predators.

He is Zhixia's best friend, guide, emotional support system, and occasional source of unnecessary chaos.

And unfortunately for him...

There is a fox watching.

Lim Daniel.

Clever.

Charming.

Observant.

And far too entertained by Zhile's reactions.

Their relationship will have a completely different flavor from Hyesok and Zhixia's.

Basically, Daniel is going to tease the squirrel.

The squirrel is going to lose his mind.

Hyesok notices far more than he says.

He remembers things.

He watches.

He quietly helps.

And when he eventually realizes how much Zhixia matters to him, he'll have to learn the difference between protecting someone and controlling them.

THE TAIL HAS ENTERED MAXIMUM FLUFF MODE. 😭

But beneath the comedy is someone deeply loyal who refuses to leave his friends behind.

Zhile's story will be about discovering that courage doesn't always look like standing completely still.

Sometimes courage looks like being terrified and staying anyway.

Role: Side Love Interest

Sly • Intelligent • Playful • Charming • Calculating • Surprisingly protective

Daniel enjoys observing people.

Especially one particular squirrel.

He likes teasing Zhile because Zhile's reactions are simply too entertaining.

But Daniel isn't careless.

His playful personality hides a sharp awareness of danger and an unexpectedly serious protective instinct.

The more time he spends with Zhile, the harder it becomes to pretend that his interest is merely amusement.

His journey:

Teasing → Curiosity → Trust → Attachment → Realization → Confession

🍃 WHAT THIS STORY IS REALLY ABOUT

Although Blue Behind the Leaves has romance at its center, the story is about more than romance.

It's about fear.

About prejudice.

About the labels people inherit before they ever meet someone.

About growing up in a world that tells you:

And slowly discovering that people are far more complicated than the instincts attached to their species.

A wolf can choose kindness.

So please don't expect every chapter to deliver a huge romantic development.

Sometimes an entire chapter might revolve around something as simple as walking home together.

Someone remembering how another character takes their tea.

A friend noticing that something is wrong before anyone else does.

Those moments matter.

Because love isn't always loud.

Blue Behind the Leaves.

The title comes from the image at the heart of this story:

Standing beneath a canopy of leaves and looking upward.

At first, you only see green.

Branches.

Shadows.

Movement.

But when the wind shifts the leaves, you suddenly see something beyond them.

Blue sky.

Something that was there all along.

You simply couldn't see it yet.

That is what the story represents.

Fear can cover our vision.

Prejudice can become a wall.

Instinct can make us believe there is only one possible path.

But sometimes the leaves move.

And suddenly—

there is blue.
