Missing piece
Story
---
A girl named Tara lived in a house without any affection.
The house was never quiet, yet silence always found her.
Even when her brother’s laughter echoed from the courtyard and her two younger sisters argued over trivial things, she felt like a ghost wandering through her own home — unseen, unheard, unwanted.
She had studied well, but her heart belonged to the world of design and delicate gears, to the rhythm of architecture and the whisper of watch mechanics. Her father called it foolishness. Her mother called it obsession. Her siblings called it strange.
That night, the air smelled of alcohol and anger. Her father stumbled in, his voice rising like thunder.
“You’re a burden,” he shouted, his words slurred but sharp. “A waste. Unlucky.”
Each syllable struck her like shards of glass. She stood still, her eyes burning, her hands trembling, until he collapsed into sleep. Her mother turned away, pretending not to hear. Her siblings avoided her gaze.
Left alone, she sat before her desk — her sanctuary — where the miniature tower clock waited. It was a limited‑edition model she had bought with her own savings, a fragile dream she could hold. She worked on it with quiet precision, adjusting gears, aligning arches, breathing life into its tiny frame.
But when she reached the final step, her heart sank. The last piece was missing.
It was like watching a film stop before its climax — the ache of incompletion gnawed at her. She searched every corner of the house, every drawer, every shadow, but the piece was gone.
Finally, she found a similar part, not perfect but close enough. She fixed it in place, and the clock began to tick. The sound was soft yet powerful, as if time itself had awakened. A strange wave passed through her — not sound, not sight, but a pulse that rippled through her mind and heart.
Everyone else went on with their lives, unaware. But she felt it — a message, a vibration, a whisper of destiny.
