UPENDO ULIOJIFICHA

CHAPTER 1: A SURPRISE OF PAIN

Author: Frazia Thomas

The rain was falling angrily. Lightning struck every few minutes.

It was as if the sky itself was angry.

Outside the main gate of the rental house. A girl was kneeling in the mud.

Rainwater was streaming down her, from her head all the way to her back.

Her clothes were completely soaked and sticking to her body.

From inside the gate, the sound of a woman shouting could be heard.

_"Get out Freyna! I said get out of my house!_

_You shameless girl! How dare you do this disgrace inside my house?"_

It was the voice of Mrs. Rahel, Freyna's mother.

Passersby had stopped far away. Some were hiding under umbrellas.

They were taking pictures with their phones and whispering.

Freyna was silent. She just crossed her arms over her chest.

Without making any sound of crying or saying a single word to defend herself.

Because she knew that whatever she said wouldn't be understood.

FAMILY INTRODUCTION

Mrs. Rahel was a mother of 6 children.

A 52-year-old woman who didn't have a husband.

Her first child was Lameck, who lived with his father in a different region.

Then came three daughters: Evalyn who was married and lived next door to them,

Erasi who was a single mother just like her mother, and her... Freyna, 20 years old.

Last of all were Beti and the baby of the house, Pendo, Mrs. Rahel's last born.

But today, it was Freyna who was being cursed.

FLASH BACK A FEW DAYS BEFORE FREYNA WAS KICKED OUT

That day Mrs. Rahel's house had a guest.

It was Veranda, Mrs. Rahel's younger sister's daughter who had come from Musoma.

"Honestly, kids these days grow up so fast," Mrs. Rahel said happily.

"Vera, I left you so small. Today look at you, you've become a big beautiful girl!"

Veranda smiled and lowered her head shyly. "Thank you mama"

"And you look like aunt Fifi," Pendo added quickly.

Beti, who was busy with her schoolwork, just grunted. "Why don't they even look alike."

Suddenly Vera asked while looking around the living room.

"Mama... I don't see Freyna. Where is she?"

Mrs. Rahel's smile faded.

"Where else would she be but sleeping in her room.

Pendo, go wake her up."

A few minutes later, Freyna came out of the room.

Her face looked sleepy but when she saw Veranda, she smiled genuinely.

"Hi Vera," she said.

Veranda was surprised. "You remember me? It's been so many years."

"You haven't changed. You still have that same childhood face,"

Freyna laughed a little. It was her first time smiling with joy again after many days.

They talked, they remembered their aunts and cousins.

For a short time, the house was full of happiness.

And Freyna felt peace again.

But what she didn't know was that this was the beginning of her sorrow.

CUT TO HAPPINESS

At the same time, on the other side of town in a neighborhood full of big beautiful houses

and very peaceful and luxurious.

Inside one big house full of wealth, other noises were ruling.

"How many times have I talked to you about the issue of marriage, Frank?"

Mr. Jonas shouted angrily.

His son, Frank, a 28-year-old man wearing an expensive suit sighed with boredom.

"Dad I don't want to get married. And we already talked about this before."

"When will you stop changing women like clothes? The company needs you!"

Frank smiled sarcastically. "Company? Dad, when did I say I want the company?"

Mr. Jonas shook his head in anger full of disappointment.

"You don't need the company. But the company needs you. And you MUST get married, Frank."

Frank was standing in front of the window.

His expensive suit looked worthless in his eyes.

"Dad, you can give that company to Justin. Why me..."

His words were cut off by the sound of his phone.

_Triii! Triii! Triii!_

He took the phone out of his pocket. The name "RICHARD" lit up on the screen.

He hesitated for one second, then answered.

"What's up?" his voice was normal.

On the other side, his friend's voice was heard sounding serious.

"Clean bro. Where are you?"

"Home"

"Hee! At home?"

"Yes what's up. Why are you talking like that?"

Richard was silent for 3 seconds. Frank could only hear his heavy breathing.

"Bro... you mean you don't know?"

"Know... what? Get to the point"

There was silence. Frank's heart started beating fast for no reason.

"Vivian has been seen. She's in Tanzania... and today she's getting engaged."

Frank froze without saying anything, with the phone still at his ear.

The world stopped.

FLASHBACK: 4 YEARS AGO

HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

The light from the lamp was dim. The scent of Vivian's perfume filled the whole room.

Frank was lying on the bed. Vivian's head was resting on his chest.

She could hear the beating of his heart.

"Baby" Vivian said in a seductive voice. She closed her eyes and smiled.

"Promise me you'll never leave me."

Frank laughed while playing with Vivian's hair. "How could I leave you mama?

Tomorrow you're going to be mine forever. I can't even picture that day."

Vivian lifted her head and looked Frank in the eyes. With her eyes shining.

"Don't worry honey. Tomorrow I have a surprise for you my husband."

"What surprise?" Frank asked curiously.

Vivian kissed his forehead. "Don't rush hubby. But I'm telling you...

the surprise I'm going to give you tomorrow, you'll never forget for the rest of your life."

"I love you," Frank said and kissed her lovingly.

"I love you too," Vivian replied.

The next day arrived.

MR. JONAS'S HOUSE - EVENING

Outside, Mr. Jonas and Justin were welcoming guests with big smiles.

The wedding ceremony had been arranged. Everything was ready.

Inside, Frank was with his friend Richard. He was trembling with excitement.

"I can't believe I'm getting married today. I'm so nervous guys... huuu"

Richard patted his back. "Nervous about what bro?

You're about to become someone's husband. Calm down."

Frank smiled. He took out his phone. He was waiting for a message from Vivian.

Ding!

A message came in.

He opened the message quickly. His smile disappeared instantly.

His expression changed. His eyes widened. His hand started shaking.

"W...wh... what is this?" He spoke in a dead voice.

Richard noticed him. "Bro, what’s up?"

Frank didn't answer. He just stood frozen.

Richard, after seeing Frank frozen, staring at his phone...

He decided to lean over to look too.

On the screen was a picture of Vivian.

A picture of Vivian at the airport.

And she had the happiest smile.

And below it was just one message.

Richard opened his mouth. He said nothing. He took one step back.

Frank stared at that picture again and again.

His heart was breaking into pieces.

With fear. Gasping for breath.

He went to his contacts and immediately looked for Vivian's number saved as "My only sky". He called.

And the phone wasn't picked up but he was told.

"The number you are calling is not available"

Frank lost all strength. His hands were shaking like leaves.

Slowly he lifted his eyes. His face was twisted with anger and pain.

Then... with all the strength he had...

BAM!!

He smashed the phone on the floor. It shattered into pieces.

So badly it couldn't be repaired.

"NOOOOOO!!!" His voice tore through the entire house.

"Frank please calm down!" Richard said in fear and grabbed his shoulder.

But Frank pushed him away hard. Without saying a word, he ran to the door,

flung it open with force and ran outside like a madman.

Outside, Mr. Jonas and Justin were still welcoming guests with smiles.

Frank passed them like the wind. He said nothing. He didn't look at them.

"Brother!" Justin shouted. "What's going on?"

Mr. Jonas stood up and turned around in shock. "What's going on here?"

Richard came out behind him chasing him.

Justin followed them too.

INSIDE FRANK'S HEAD

As he was running. One voice kept replaying in his head. Vivian's message.

_Frank... today I want to say thank you.

Thank you so much... for your time... your money... and your stupid love._

_The truth is... I never loved you. And you were such a fool.

You never realized that._

_For me it was so easy, to take your heart... and all of this is because of your stupid kindness and mercy._

_Haaa! Oops... I almost forgot, isn't today our wedding day? ee... hahaha...

Go find someone else to marry because the woman you wanted to marry, Vivian.

She's already gone._

_And don't bother looking for me... because

you won't find me... never... goodbye Frank._

Those words were like knives. Each word stabbed his heart.

He ran faster. He didn't look left or right. Tears had blinded his eyes.

Suddenly... he found himself in the middle of a tarmac road.

Cars were passing at high speed.

_HOOONK!!_

The loud horn of a Scania truck blared repeatedly.

Frank turned around slowly. The truck was coming fast.

Its lights were shining like terrifying beams.

Frank stood still. He wasn't afraid.

"Fine... let's die," he whispered.

He closed his eyes. Ready for anything.

DUUUH

A strong wind. That left coldness behind, passed by.

His body flew in the air like paper. About 4 meters high. Then he came back down.

PAA!

His head hit the tarmac. Silence.

A lot of blood poured out of him.

In his state of losing consciousness. One big tear fell from his right eye.

A tear full of sadness, regret and disbelief at what had happened.

"Fraaaaankkk" Richard's voice tore through the air.

FLASH BACK TO NOW

Frank was startled by his father's voice.

That was calling him repeatedly.

And his phone was still at his ear.

"Frank! Hey Frank!" his father's voice was heard.

"Y-yes..." he replied in a weak voice.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes," he lied.

Mr. Jonas nodded. "I can see your mind isn't settled yet. Later, when you're okay, we’ll talk about the marriage and the company issue."

Mr. Jonas left.

Frank went back to the phone that had been on his ear the whole time. "Rich... can you hear me?"

"Yes bro. Why did you suddenly go silent?"

Frank swallowed hard. His voice sounded like a man who was dead inside. "Can you tell me... where has she been seen?"

Richard paused for a second. "She's at... T... hotel."

Frank hung up. He clenched his fist.

Veins of anger appeared on his neck. His eyes were red and full of deep hatred.

He stood up and went outside. He got on his motorcycle.

40 minutes later, he was in front of a big hotel. He went straight in and headed for the elevator.

His heart was beating like a drum.

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then he stepped out of the elevator.

The suite door was right in front of him.

Inside, soft and seductive music was playing.

Outside. Frank grabbed the door handle.

His hand was trembling.

And right there... he opened it.
