A Note from the Author
Hi. Thank you for checking in.
I wrote this book the way you’re about to read it — a little disoriented, a little seduced, never quite sure which room I was standing in. Some chapters I wrote at 3 a.m. and didn’t fully trust the next morning. A few of them, if I’m honest, still don’t feel like mine.
This isn’t a story that plays fair, and I didn’t want it to. You’re going to get six people, six versions of the truth, and a house that has its own opinion about which version wins. Some things won’t add up. That’s not a mistake. That’s the guesthouse doing what it does.
A few things before you go further:
This book gets intimate — sometimes tender, sometimes hungry in ways that aren’t comfortable. It gets dark — grief, obsession, the kind of wanting that doesn’t ask permission. If you’re looking for a cozy stay, I’d check the reviews before you book this room.
I’d love to hear what you think as you go — which guest you trusted first, which one you stopped trusting, which room you’d never, ever ask for. Comment as you read. Yell at me. Tell me who you think the concierge really is. I read everything, even the theories that are more unhinged than the book itself. Especially those.
One last thing: if partway through, you feel like you’ve read a scene before — you probably have. Trust that feeling. Don’t trust it too much.
Thank you for staying. Try not to wander the halls alone.
