Chapter 1
The Secret Beyond the Mountains
Arin had always dreamed of adventure. Every evening, he would climb the hill behind his village and stare at the mountains in the distance. The villagers said that nobody should ever cross those mountains because the land beyond them was filled with ancient ruins, wild forests, and secrets that were better left forgotten.
Arin didn’t believe them.
One rainy afternoon, while helping his grandfather clean the dusty attic, Arin noticed something strange beneath an old wooden chest. A loose floorboard moved when he stepped on it. He pulled it aside and discovered a small wooden box covered with mysterious symbols.
Inside was an ancient map.
Arin carefully unfolded it. It showed his village, the Whispering Woods, a huge mountain range, and a strange island floating high above the clouds. At the bottom of the map were five words:
FIND THE SKY CAVE BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Arin’s heart began beating faster.
“What is the Sky Cave?” he wondered.
He rushed downstairs and showed the map to his grandfather. The moment his grandfather saw it, his face became pale.
“Where did you find this?”
“In the attic. What is it?”
His grandfather quickly locked the door.
“Arin, you must listen carefully. That map has been hidden for years. I hoped nobody would ever find it.”
“Why?”
Before his grandfather could answer, a deep roar echoed from the forest.
The windows shook.
His grandfather looked outside.
Several red lights were moving between the trees.
“The Ash Riders,” he whispered.
“Who are they?”
“People who have been searching for that map.”
He handed Arin a small silver compass.
“Take the map and go through the secret tunnel beneath the house.”
“But I’m not leaving you!”
“You have to. The Sky Cave contains something that could protect this entire land.”
The front door suddenly burst open.
Dark-armored riders entered the house.
Arin ran toward an old bookshelf. His grandfather pulled a hidden lever, and the floor opened beneath Arin.
“Go!”
Arin jumped.
He fell into a dark tunnel just as the entrance closed above him.
For several minutes, he crawled through the narrow passage until he finally reached the other side. He emerged at the edge of the Whispering Woods.
The silver compass in his hand began glowing.
Its needle pointed toward the mountains.
Arin took a deep breath.
Then he began walking.
The forest was darker than he remembered. Strange noises came from between the trees, and the wind seemed to whisper his name.
After several hours, Arin heard footsteps behind him.
He turned.
A girl stood on a tree branch, holding a bow.
“You’re carrying something valuable,” she said.
Arin stepped backward.
“Who are you?”
“Lyra.”
“Are you one of the Ash Riders?”
Lyra laughed.
“If I were, you wouldn’t have noticed me.”
Arin showed her the map.
Her smile disappeared.
“Where did you get that?”
“My grandfather.”
“My mother disappeared years ago while searching for the Sky Cave.”
Arin looked at her.
“Then you know where it is?”
“No. But I know someone who might.”
They decided to travel together.
As evening arrived, they reached a broken stone bridge. Three enormous wolves with silver eyes blocked their path.
Lyra raised her bow.
But the largest wolf stepped forward.
“Why do you seek the Sky Cave?”
Arin stared.
The wolf had spoken.
“My grandfather said something inside could save our land.”
The wolf studied him.
“Then you must hurry. The darkness is waking.”
The wolves moved aside.
Arin and Lyra crossed the bridge.
For two days they traveled through forests and valleys. They climbed steep hills, crossed cold rivers, and discovered ancient stone statues hidden among the trees.
Finally, they reached the mountains.
The tallest peak disappeared into the clouds.
The compass began shining brighter.
“It’s here,” Arin said.
They started climbing.
The wind became stronger. Snow covered the rocks, and the path became difficult to see.
Suddenly, the mountain shook.
Lyra slipped.
“Arin!”
He grabbed her hand and pulled her back.
Then a huge shadow passed over them.
They looked up.
A magnificent silver dragon flew through the clouds.
It landed on a cliff above them.
“You carry the map of the First Guardians,” the dragon said.
Arin couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“What are the First Guardians?”
“They were warriors who protected this world long ago.”
The dragon pointed toward a wall of ice.
“The entrance is behind that wall.”
Arin pressed the silver compass against the ice.
A blue light spread across the mountain.
CRACK!
The ice split open.
A massive doorway appeared.
Beyond it was a breathtaking cave filled with hundreds of floating crystals. Their light made the walls sparkle like a sky full of stars.
At the center of the cave stood an ancient golden throne.
A warrior wearing golden armor sat upon it.
His eyes opened.
“You have finally arrived.”
“Who are you?” Arin asked.
“I am the last Guardian.”
Suddenly, explosions shook the cave.
The Ash Riders had found them.
Their leader marched into the chamber.
“Give us the map,” he demanded.
Arin held it tightly.
“No.”
The soldiers charged.
Lyra fired arrows while Arin ran between the crystals, trying to avoid the attackers.
But there were too many.
Arin stumbled and fell.
The leader approached.
Then the Guardian shouted, “Arin! You have been searching for the wrong treasure!”
Arin looked up.
“What?”
“The power you seek isn’t inside this cave. It is inside you.”
The silver compass suddenly flew from Arin’s hand.
A brilliant light surrounded him.
The ancient symbols on the walls began glowing.
A strange mark appeared on Arin’s palm.
The Ash Riders stopped.
Their leader whispered, “The Resonant...”
Arin slowly stood.
He felt a powerful energy flowing through him.
He raised his hand.
A wave of energy swept across the cave, sending the Ash Riders running from the chamber.
Silence returned.
The Guardian smiled.
“You have awakened.”
Arin looked at his hand.
“What am I?”
“A Resonant. Someone capable of awakening the ancient power of the First Guardians.”
The Guardian then revealed the truth.
The Ash Riders served an ancient enemy known as the Shadow King. Long ago, the First Guardians had defeated him and scattered seven magical crystals across the world. The crystals were created to prevent his return.
But now the Shadow King was beginning to awaken.
The seven crystals were the only things powerful enough to stop him.
Arin looked toward Lyra.
“Where are they?”
“Scattered across the world,” the Guardian answered. “One lies beyond the desert. Another rests beneath an ancient city. One is hidden inside a forest that moves. The others are even farther away.”
Arin looked through the doorway.
For the first time, he could see the world beyond the mountains.
Far away, seven beams of light rose into the sky.
He thought about his grandfather.
He thought about his village.
He was frightened, but he knew he couldn’t return home and pretend nothing had happened.
He tightened his grip on the compass.
“I’m going to find them.”
Lyra smiled.
“Then I’m coming with you.”
Together they stepped outside the Sky Cave.
The silver dragon flew above them as the sun rose over the mountains.
Behind them was the life they had always known.
Ahead was an enormous world filled with forgotten kingdoms, mysterious creatures, ancient secrets, and dangers they couldn’t imagine.
Arin looked toward the first beam of light.
He smiled.
His greatest adventure had begun.
