DEMONHUNTERZ: The Pact

Summary

The Circle K register groans. Evol Gemini drops lukewarm Mexican Coke and chicharrones on the counter. His right eye is tired, human green; his left is flat, unblinking gold, bought by a Goetic Prince when he was thirteen. The sliding doors hiss. Vexiel glides in, wearing an immaculate white linen suit that defies the Tucson heat. "Stolas is nesting on Mount Lemmon," Vexiel purrs. "The Bishop is losing his mind." Evol cracks a Coke. "Tell Mateo to hike up with a flashlight. I'm off." Vexiel steps close, the air frosting. "One day, that true-love clause triggers. Naberius collects. You're just a kid from a concrete box." Evol points down at Vexiel's Italian leather shoe. A squashed pink peach ring is stuck to the sole. Vexiel freezes. The celestial threat instantly deflates. Evol walks out into the desert night, climbs into his Ford Ranger, and glances in the mirror—one green eye, one gold. "We're getting tacos," Evol mutters. "Then we're climbing a mountain."

Prologue: The Pact

Prologue: The Pact

Real talk — that light don’t flicker, it hums, straight through concrete, straight through steel, right into the small of Evol’s back like the building’s got something to confess and forgot how.

Air’s thick. Floor stripper and old denim and blood — his blood, iron and warm, dripping off split knuckles onto orange cloth that gave up looking clean a long time ago.

You’re nothing. His mother’s voice, still living rent-free in his skull. A mistake I pay for every single day.

“Shut up.” To the concrete. Like concrete’s ever answered anybody. “Shut up... shut up...”

And the room drops. Not window-open cold — liquid-nitrogen cold, the kind that replaces the air instead of just chilling it. His breath comes out thick enough to grab. Frost crawls the cinderblock, grey and feathered, right over some other kid’s tally marks — some other kid who sat right here counting days that never came back around.

Then the silence rips.

Not a sound. A frequency. A thousand dead throats singing one note in a language nobody speaks anymore, and it sounds like stone dragging on stone at the bottom of something buried way too deep to dig back up. Beautiful. Horrific. Same breath.

The shadow by the toilet quits being a shadow.

Rises. Seven feet of it, man-shaped, like a man built out of oil and old smoke — and the smell hits before the shape even finishes: parchment, wet feathers, creosote after a storm, ozone cracking like a downed line looking for something to burn.

Charcoal suit. Fabric that eats light instead of holding it. Face too smooth to be real, mouth too wide to be kind. And behind him — not wings. Crane necks, dark and wet, beaks clicking in time with that choir like he’s the one conducting it.

Evol’s spine hits the wall before his brain even votes on it.

“Who — what are you?” Throat full of glass.

“I am the answer to a prayer you were too proud to speak, little king.” Three voices stacked in one — smooth as money, rough as gravel, thin as a whisper dragged over a headstone.

He doesn’t walk. The distance just quits. Collapses like it was never really there.

Crouched now. Trousers that don’t crease. Eyes flat and black like two mirrors polished with midnight, and inside them — this cell, burning slow and blue and silent, like it already happened and he’s just showing Evol the replay.

“Look at you.” A hand out, nails black horn, filed sharp. “Nephilim blood. High Court fire. Left in a concrete box by a woman who uses your heart for an ashtray.” A pause, almost delighted. “Deliciously absurd.”

“I don’t know you.” Barely words. Just air shaped like words.

“You know my mark.” The crane head lunges, beak an inch off his ear, exhaling smoke that tastes like dust and old copper. “Prince Naberius. Master of arts. Restorer of lost dignity. Lord of the quiet dead.” A beat. “And right now — I’ve got a deal for you.”

No pocket. He drags his hand through empty air and the air tears — violet, jagged, cold-lit like a wound that glows. Out of it comes a scroll, pale leather, geometry crawling across it like it’s alive. Circles inside squares. Symbols turning like gears with nowhere to go.

“A Life Pact.” All three voices at once, filling the room to the corners. “Not your soul — I’m a prince, not some corner peddler. I want your eyes. I want to ride behind your ribs while you tear this whole world open. My geometry. My command over seventy-two thrones. My fire — yours. My shadow in your skull so you never gotta sit in a room this empty again.”

The choir swells. Peaks. The light bursts, sparks raining white, and then it’s just him and the scroll and two black mirror eyes in the dark.

“And the price?” Evol’s chest is doing something it’s never done before.

“One clause.” The smile shows teeth that don’t belong in a human mouth. “This holds — unbroken, absolute, forever — until the second you find real love. Unselfish. The kind that don’t ask for nothing back.”

He leans in. His whisper could freeze blood standing still.

“True love,” Evol says. Small. Like saying it might summon it, might scare it off — he doesn’t know which.

“A door out you’ll never find.” Soft. Almost gentle, if a trap could be gentle. “We writing this, warlock, or not?”

No pen. He slits his own palm with a thumbnail black as the rest of him — blood coming up thick and dark, smelling like honey left too long over fire.

“Your blood’s the signature. Mine’s the seal.”

Evol looks down. Split knuckles. Blood he already gave this place for free, for a mother who never once said thank you. He thinks about the cuffs. Her face when they went on — that smile, finally getting what she wanted. He thinks about the hallway outside this door, grey and endless, leading nowhere but more of the same. Small. Weak. Alone. Forever, amen.

Not this time.

He presses his palm to the wound.

And the whole world flips inside out —

The choir doesn’t stop, it slams straight through his skull, cold shooting up his arm like glass turned liquid, veins shattering and freezing back over with black fire, back arching off the cot, a scream that never makes it past his teeth — gold pouring in behind his eyes, celestial roads, true names, the whole dark architecture of something older than the word for old, all of it landing at once, no warning, no mercy, just —

THOOM.

Air slams back like a door that finally unsticks.

Steam where the frost used to be. The rift snaps shut like it was never there.

He drops back on the cot, breathing like he just broke the surface after way too long under. Body’s on fire — not hurt-fire. Just heat. Like somebody drained the blood out and poured gold back in instead.

Naberius — gone. Just the cell now, and that dim orange light bleeding through the slot in the door like the building’s the only thing that noticed anything happened at all.

He sits up slow. Looks at his palm. No blood where the knuckles split — just a thin silver line, shaped like a crane’s wing, sinking under the skin like it’s been waiting there his whole life for a reason to show up.

And behind his eyes, something’s moved in. Ancient. Heavy. Settled against his spine like it already unpacked.

A fine start, little king. Silk and grave-dirt, both at once. Now... let’s go see what your mother’s up to.

He looks up. Steel mirror over the sink, scratched half to nothing.

Still thirteen. Right eye still his — dark green, still just a kid’s eye, still scared under all of it.

Left eye ain’t his no more. Nephilim grace, Goetic fire, burning flat and gold and permanent — bright enough to light up the whole damn cell on its own.

And he doesn’t look away from it. Not this time.
