BORN WHERE DREAMS WERE EXPENSIVE
CHAPTER ONE
BORN WHERE DREAMS WERE EXPENSIVE
I was born into a world where life did not come with guarantees.
I grew up knowing what struggle looked like.
I knew what it meant to see people work hard and still have very little to show for it.
I knew what it meant to have dreams while living in circumstances that constantly reminded you of your limitations.
I grew up in the ghetto.
But I never allowed the ghetto to completely convince me that I belonged there forever.
There was always something inside me that wanted more.
More for myself.
More for my family.
More for my future.
I wanted to become successful.
I wanted to make something meaningful out of my life.
I wanted to become the kind of man people would look at one day and say,
“He came from nothing, but he made something of himself.”
As a young boy, I did not have all the answers.
I did not know what career I would have.
I did not know exactly how I would become successful.
I did not know how long the journey would take.
But I had a dream.
And sometimes a dream is all a young person needs to keep moving.
The environment around me taught me many things.
It taught me that life could be hard.
It taught me that people could struggle silently.
It taught me that not everyone who smiled was happy.
It taught me that poverty was not just about money.
Poverty could also be a poverty of opportunity.
A poverty of knowledge.
A poverty of confidence.
A poverty of hope.
But I still hoped.
I believed that somehow my story could become different.
I believed that the circumstances surrounding my childhood were only the beginning.
I did not know that my biggest battle would not be poverty.
My biggest battle would eventually become myself.
As I grew older, my world changed.
I met new people.
I became more independent.
I started making more decisions for myself.
And gradually, I discovered a different side of life.
There were people who seemed to be enjoying everything I had always wanted.
They dressed well.
They went out.
They had money.
They knew where the parties were.
They knew the clubs.
They knew how to have fun.
They seemed confident.
They seemed free.
And I wanted to experience that life too.
At first, nothing seemed wrong.
It was just friendship.
Just hanging out.
Just enjoying ourselves.
Just trying to forget the stress of life.
But life rarely announces when a wrong turn is beginning.
Sometimes it begins with something that looks completely harmless.
A conversation.
A friendship.
An invitation.
A night out.
A drink.
A cigarette.
A decision.
Then another.
And another.
Until one day, you look around and realize you have traveled much farther than you intended.
That was what happened to me.
I was about to enter a season of my life that would test everything.
My dreams.
My values.
My faith.
My discipline.
My future.
But at the time, I had no idea.
I was simply a young man looking for friendship, excitement and acceptance.
I did not know that the people I was about to call friends would influence the direction of my life.
I did not know that some friendships are not friendships at all.
Some are simply temporary partnerships between people who are heading in the same wrong direction.
And I was about to learn that lesson.
The hard way.
