The Reader's Codex of Aelin
THE POWERS BESTOWED
READER’S CODEX OF AELIN
A companion guide to the world of The Powers Bestowed
Aelin • The Brotherhood • Battle Cry • The World Beyond
FOR READERS
Welcome to Aelin
Aelin is more than a hidden island. It is an ancient, modern nation with its own counties, communities, institutions, traditions, technology, and history. At the heart of that history stands the Brotherhood of Aelin: five men entrusted with the protection of the island and the powers carried by five extraordinary amulets.
This Reader’s Codex is designed as a companion for people reading The Powers Bestowed on Royal Road and the other platforms where the novels appear. It gathers the worldbuilding that is useful while reading without turning the companion into an author-only encyclopedia.
SPOILER NOTE
This guide describes established worldbuilding, characters, places, institutions, and the broad history of the setting. Some entries reflect information available in The Rising as well as Origins. It intentionally avoids detailed plot recaps and future-story secrets.
A NOTE ABOUT CANON
The current novels and explicitly established author canon take precedence over older reference drafts. Where a detail has not been firmly established, this guide does not invent an answer.
1. Aelin at a Glance
Aelin is a large North Atlantic island nation hidden for centuries by the Veil. Its people are modern, educated, technologically capable, and culturally diverse. The island has five counties, each with a distinct identity, while the Brotherhood connects them as one national institution.

2. The Five Counties
The counties are not separate nations. They are distinct expressions of Aelinian life, connected by trade, government, education, culture, and the Brotherhood.
Harmonytis
The political heart of Aelin. It contains the Castle of the Elders, the Royal Residence, Congress, coastal fishing interests, orchards, berry cultivation, Lake Eiran, Gaelen Bay, Maethren’s Point, and Cardinal Point.
Neart
The agricultural heartland. Its fertile country supports grain, vegetables, orchard crops, herbs, bakeries, communal ovens, harvest traditions, and a strong culture of hospitality. Svaerdelheim is its county seat.
Léirstinach
The artistic and cultural center. Music, theatre, literature, storytelling, textiles, tapestries, schools, conservatories, and public art are part of everyday life. Valdric is located here, and Connor is its Governor.
Draíocht
The center of mining, higher learning, science, engineering, alchemy, blacksmithing, and research. Daerdon University serves as its county seat and is central to the island’s intellectual life.
Ainmhithe
The county of horses, ranching, dairies, veterinary education, wildlife, and animal welfare. Miles is its county seat, and Ricky is its Governor.

3. Life in Aelin
Aelin is a modern society rather than a technological time capsule. Its people have electricity, medicine, universities, engineering, broadcasting, agriculture, skilled trades, and organized government while retaining traditions shaped by centuries of separation.
·Aelinian society is a modern cultural melting pot shaped by immigration over time.
·Family, community responsibility, craftsmanship, stewardship, education, and loyalty to Aelin are recurring cultural values.
·Neart is especially associated with shared food, baking, harvest traditions, and hospitality.
·Léirstinach brings music, theatre, literature, storytelling, and textile arts into ordinary public life.
·Draíocht joins formal scholarship with guilds, practical craft, blacksmithing, science, alchemy, and engineering.
·Ainmhithe treats animal care as both an economic responsibility and a moral one.
4. Government & the Crown
Aelin combines an ancient monarchy with an elected Congress and county-level government. The High King is not merely ceremonial. The Prime Minister manages the daily affairs of government, while Congress provides the elected legislative body.
·The current High King is Jace Elias, who is also Guardian and Governor of Harmonytis.
·The current Prime Minister is Galena, Nathan Dallenger’s wife.
·Congress has 50 Representatives: ten from each of the five counties.
·Representatives are elected in county elections every seven years.
·Each county has a Governor who works with its ten Representatives on county matters.
·The Brotherhood holds major responsibilities for national protection and security.
Law and Public Safety
Aelin’s police officers are called constables, and the police service is the Constabulary. Serious violent crime is uncommon, and most ordinary disputes are handled locally before moving upward through county government and, when necessary, to the Crown.
·Aelin currently has no death penalty.
·Ordinary jails operate within counties, with a main prison in Ainmhithe.
·Two secure black sites hold exceptionally dangerous prisoners whose crimes caused grave harm to Aelinian citizens or the Brotherhood.
5. Technology, Transportation & Medicine
Aelin has modern scientific and engineering knowledge, but it makes deliberate choices about how technology is used.
Transportation
·There are no ordinary automobiles, large trucks, or conventional four-wheeled road fleets.
·Horse-drawn carriages remain the principal system for heavy freight between communities and counties.
·Motorcycles and mopeds provide faster personal transportation.
·The Aelinian Clean Air Act of 1929 established a long-running restriction on combustion-powered transportation.
·In The Rising, Nathan develops an early low-emission hybrid-style work vehicle for farms, ranches, stables, dairies, mines, and other heavy-duty work.
Power & Science
·Hydroelectric generation is a major source of electricity.
·Aelin maintains two substations in each county.
·Wind power is used in selected areas, notably Léirstinach and experimental Harmonytis installations.
·Daerdon University supports science, biology, engineering, alchemy, Veil studies, and research.
Medicine
Aelinian medicine is modern. The island supports professional doctors, emergency care, advanced hospitals, medical research, and a strong veterinary tradition, especially in Ainmhithe.
6. The Brotherhood of Aelin
The Brotherhood is a five-member institution that protects Aelin, carries the five amulets, preserves the knowledge of previous generations, and serves alongside the nation’s government. It is simultaneously a defensive force, a governing institution, a historical chain of inheritance, and a family.

7
Jace Elias
The prophesied generation toward which the long prophetic thread points.
8. The Prophecy
The prophetic thread begins with Caelmor, the Third Visionary. His vision came not as ordinary words but as an overwhelming wall of unfamiliar music and instruments from a future he could not understand. He eventually recognized what he had seen as Battle Cry and the five men who would become the Seventh Brotherhood.
THE BROTHERHOOD FIVE
The long prophetic wording is associated with a Brotherhood Five and an empathic three whose destiny is tied to the destruction of the Conqueror. Connor’s Seventh-Generation wording shifts from a future tense into present fulfillment.
Each later Visionary carries part of the prophetic continuum. The visions are not mechanical copies of one another. Together, they form the accumulated expectation that leads toward the Seventh Generation.
9. The Five Amulets
Agamore created the five amulets after Daeron and his generals had endured repeated narrow victories against Aldus. He intended to create powerful assets for the Crown. He did not understand how broad the powers would become.
The lost method
Agamore deliberately left no usable recipe. He did not record a complete list of ingredients, proportions, prayers, incantations, or construction sequence because he feared the knowledge could be turned against Aelin. The Brotherhood inherited the amulets and the knowledge learned from them, not the original formula.
What the first Brotherhood learned
The first five had no complete manual. They discovered their powers through direct experience. Over roughly a year, the amulets proved to be far more than enhanced battlefield tools. Aelin became extraordinarily difficult to defeat in siege and defense, yet Aldus continued attacking. The lesson was painful: winning battles did not end the war.
10. The Seventh Brotherhood
Jace Elias
Guardian • White Opal • Drummer
Jason Beánnú Elias is High King of Aelin, Governor of Harmonytis, Guardian of the Brotherhood, and drummer of Battle Cry. He is descended from Daeron’s bloodline. His natural empathy existed before the Guardian amulet and was amplified by it. Among his defining qualities are compassion, loyalty, humility, humor, and a fierce sense of responsibility.
Connor Braydee
Visionary • Emerald • Lead Singer / Violinist
Connor Thomas Braydee is Governor of Léirstinach and the Seventh Visionary. He carries the Emerald amulet and possesses clairvoyance, future sight, telepathic sensitivity, and broader mind-mage abilities. His prophetic role makes him the living end of the Visionary line.
Erik Hahn
Warrior • Blue Sapphire • Bassist
Erik Ivar Hahn is Governor of Neart, High General of the Aelinian armed forces, Warrior, and bassist of Battle Cry. He brings enormous physical strength, combat ability, endurance, and military leadership to the Brotherhood.
Nathan Dallenger
Conjurer • Garnet • Keyboardist
Nathaneal Alan Dallenger is Governor of Draíocht, Conjurer, scientist, engineer, and keyboardist of Battle Cry. He is deeply involved with research, alchemy, clean technology, and the maintenance and adaptation of the Veil.
Ricky Strathan
Sentinel • Onyx • Lead Guitarist
Richard Darren Strathan is Governor of Ainmhithe, Sentinel, and lead guitarist of Battle Cry. He is exceptionally agile and is known for teleportation, spatial portals, shapeshifting, reconnaissance, and a deep connection to animals.
11. The Empathic Three
The Seventh Generation is the first Brotherhood generation to contain the unprecedented Empathic Three: Jace, Connor, and Nathan.
Brother
Level
What Distinguishes Him
Nathan
Beta-level / minor empath
A comparatively restrained empathic ability that complements his Conjurer gifts and intellect.
Connor
Alpha-level empath
A powerful empath whose abilities combine with mind-mage and other psionic talents.
Jace
Omega-level / super empath
A natural empath before the amulet; the Guardian power amplifies an already extraordinary ability.
The Empathic Three do not replace the Brotherhood of Five. Erik and Ricky remain essential to the complete unit. The three-way bond is a special internal structure inside the larger Brotherhood.
12. The Veil
The Veil was created later than the Brotherhood. In 1155 AD, during Gaelen’s Second Generation, the Second Conjurer Daerdon created the Veil because Aelin needed a way to stop being reachable by Aldus.
·The Veil extends approximately five miles around Aelin as a protective zone.
·Its partly chemical and energetic composition produces a red hue.
·Against Aelin’s blue sky, that red component produces the island’s familiar lavender or purple sky.
·The Veil interferes with modern detection methods, including satellites, radar, and echolocation.
·Ships approaching Aelinian waters can be automatically redirected or transported away from the island.
·Earlier sailors sometimes interpreted the strange navigation effects through legends of mermaids, enchanted waters, and mysterious North Atlantic regions.
·Nathan’s modern work preserves the protective effect while making navigation and maritime redirection less disruptive.
The most important distinction
ALDUS KNOWS WHERE AELIN IS.
The Veil’s success is not that Aldus has forgotten the island’s location. He has known where Aelin is for centuries. The Veil prevents him from reaching it. He can know the location and still be unable to get there.
After Aelin becomes publicly known
Public knowledge of Aelin does not make the Veil optional. Aelin can trade, negotiate, offer assistance, and maintain international relationships without surrendering its physical security. The standing position is simple: the Veil remains until Aldus the Conqueror is dead.
13. Battle Cry
The current Brotherhood is also a rock band. Battle Cry began as five regular musicians from Reno and gradually became something far larger. Their public entertainment career and their Brotherhood responsibilities exist at the same time.
·Jace: drums
·Connor: lead vocals and violin
·Erik: bass
·Nathan: keyboards, songwriting, and backing vocals
·Ricky: lead guitar
This dual identity is historically unique. The Seventh Generation is the first Brotherhood to maintain a major entertainment career while also governing Aelin.
14. The World of Aelin
Notable Creatures
·Opaline Panthers
·Banded Silver Foxes
·Guardian Parakeets with white opaline shimmer
·Aelinian Humming Spiders, which can glow and change cycle colors
Notable Plants & Materials
·Guardian Rose
·Guardian Berry, a very sweet white berry unique to Aelin
·Aelinian White Shimmer-stone
·Aelinian Black Shimmerstone
·Aelinium, a rare metal accidentally created by Nathan during an attempted chemical cohesion of simple iron ore and Aelinian White Shimmer-stone

FOR THE READER
Aelin is bigger than the plot
The story of The Powers Bestowed is built on accumulated history. Aelin’s counties, traditions, technology, government, Brotherhood, amulets, and Veil are not separate pieces. They are parts of the same world, and the Seventh Brotherhood inherits all of them at once.
Battle Cry may have begun as five musicians from Reno, but the deeper story is the long road from ordinary lives to extraordinary responsibility. The Reader’s Codex exists so readers can pause, look something up, and step back into the story without losing their place.
The Codex is a companion, not a replacement for the novels. The books are where Aelin breathes, changes, surprises, and lives.
