And You Find Comfort In Hellos (Not Goodbyes, Not Goodbye)
Kaburagi had always for as long as he could remember never needed anyone. He never felt a connection, a strong desire to commit. He hated commitment, hated what it had done to his family – his parents committed to keep the lie going. They were truly a happy family.
So when he watched as their target pulled a well hidden switch blade from his pocket, he didn’t understand the hot, shaking anxiety that washed over him – worry. It was a strange feeling, locked him in place, all he could do was look on in horror. The knife stabbing through Onoe’s side like butter. Their target was gone, leaving nothing but a crumbling, coughing, bleeding Onoe.
Kaburagi’s inside were burning, a heavy feeling in each rushed step. The blood pooled around Onoe who was curled around his injured side, it stained his fingers and shirt and pants. Kaburagi couldn’t breathe.
“Onoe! Stay awake, you gotta stay awake.” Kaburagi watched himself from outside his body, his shaking hands prying Onoe’s fingers away from the stab wound so he could press his palms against it. Onoe squirmed a broken sob of protest leaving his lips. Kaburagi pressed on the wound harder, lightheaded and dizzy, the blood coating his hands like a thick layer of paint.
“Mm’ dizzy.” Onoe slurred, a weak hand tugging at Kaburagi’s arms, trying to stop the man from pressing any harder. Kaburagi kept a palm against the wound, using his free hand to wrap around Onoe’s waist, lifting the injured man off the ground. He protested, sobbing in pain, kicking and squirming weakly. More blood gushed from the open stab wound.
Outside of the dimly lit alley the streets were clearing. Kaburagi dragged himself down the street. “Open! Keep them open.” He peered down at the man in his arms, chest burning in worry at the glazed over eyes that fluttered between open and closed. “Please,” His voice cracked, “Someone help! Excuse me! I need help!”
He stopped outside a small shop. The lights were on, but the door was locked. There wasn’t anyone around, the stupid fucking target planned this. He swallowed the lump in his throat, the burn behind his eyes growing stronger, the pain in his chest weighing him down– He slammed his fist against the door. It left a splotch of burgundy smeared across the glass. He didn’t stop, he banged on the door over and over again.
For the first time in all his life, Kaburagi was scared. Kaburagi feared for someone else, someone that wasn’t him. “Please somebody.”
The waiting room was cold. It was packed with people and Kaburagi felt like he was suffocating. He never was good with people, always unsure on what persona to take on, how to fit in, how to be liked. He raised a shaky hand to his face. He had been given a change of clothes and a hot bucket of water to wash the blood off, but he could still see the ghost of it, could still smell it on his skin. He could still hear Onoe’s labored breathing, could hear each whimper and sob. He pressed his palms against his ears, curling in on himself. He could hardly breathe, panic washing over him.
He needed to run. He needed to get out. He was trapped in a situation that scared him. How could he leave though? Onoe was his light, without his light he’d be running blindly. He couldn’t leave Onoe.
“Haru!” Her voice bubbled over his anxious thoughts, her hand on his shoulder pulling him up for air.
“Nori?” He rubbed his eyes, pushing his bangs from his face. They were soaked with a cold sweat. “What are you doing here?”
“You called me. Said you were at the hospital. Are you okay?” Nori took the empty seat next to him. Her voice was a hushed whisper. If Kaburagi was in the right mind he probably would have laughed. Nori comforting him?
“It’s.” His voice cracked, a lump trapping the words in his throat.
“Are you Onoe Satoshi’s family?”
Kaburagi stood up, the blanket wrapped around his legs crumbling to the floor. His chest heaved. Nori wrapped a comforting hand around his arm– which he normally would have brushed off. “I’m–I’m yeah, he’s my, yeah.” He coughed. The nurse who had come to get him gave him a questioning look, but nonetheless waved him over to a secluded corner.
“Is he okay!?” Nori, who had no idea what was going on, spoke first. Kaburagi stiffened.
The nurse nodded dryly, “He’s currently stable, yes.” She peered at both of them, “We only accept one visitor at the moment. Is that okay? I can give you two a second to–”
“It’s his boyfriend.” Nori pushed Kaburagi forward, giving his hand one last squeeze for comfort. “Let me know how he is, Haru.”
The minute Nori’s warmth left him he choked in panic. It bloomed in his chest, clouding his eyesight as the nurse directed him across the first floor hallways. “Please try not to bombard him. He’s still coming out of it.”
All Kaburagi could do was nod, allowing the nurse to gently escort him into Onoe’s hospital room. The door closed softly behind him. The room was small, nothing but a white counter stacked with goods and a leaky sink. The bed was placed in the middle of the room, sheets white with a blue comforter.
Kaburagi was in a daze, the only thing bringing him out of it was a groggy giggle. Onoe was propped up by a few pillows, an IV in his arm and a bruise already forming around the tape. He was a giggling mess, eye’s staring at Kaburagi.
“You look so stupid!” Onoe raised the arm without an IV out, his fingers squeezing around the air. “What’s that face for! You’re gonna get wrinkles you know and then you’re gonna be ugly.”
Kaburagi inched towards the bed, allowing Onoe’s freehand to find his, “W-what?”
“I always tell Masa that my boyfriend is the prettiest! And–” Onoe slumped forward slightly, his lips turning up in displeasure before a sob broke through his lips. “Ow.”
Kaburagi crouched at his side, fingers shaking as they squeezed Onoe’s hand. “Onoe…You’re okay.” He used his thumb to wipe under Onoe’s eyes, the man who a second ago was crying laughed again.
“Why are you crying! You look stu-”
Kaburagi could hear the dry voice of the nurse telling him not to bombard him, but here he was pressing his tear soaked lips against Onoe’s. His chest bloomed with an overwhelming feeling of love mixed with worry. When they broke away, Onoe was flushed bright red, just like the first time they ever kissed.
Kaburagi wiped away his own tears. “You’re, you’re okay.” He pressed a kiss to the top of Onoe’s hand. Three words bubbled at his lips, “I love you. I love you so much.”
