Chapter 1
THE POWER OF DREAM
Chapter One: Three Friends, Three Dreams
The afternoon sun hung over the university campus, casting soft shadows beneath the large trees scattered around the school grounds. Students moved from one lecture hall to another, some rushing to their next class, while others sat in groups discussing their plans for the future.
Under one of the biggest trees on campus, three close friends sat together.
Michael sat comfortably against the tree on the left. He was tall, medium-dark skinned, and dressed in stylish clothes that matched his confident personality. He always carried himself like someone who knew exactly where he was going in life.
Beside him sat John, a slim young man with dark-brown skin. His clothes were simple, but there was something different about him—a quiet determination that could be seen in the way he spoke and carried himself. A notebook rested on his lap.
Daniel sat on John's other side. He was medium-built, dressed smartly, and had a calm and friendly personality. He held a book in his hands as he listened to the conversation around him.
For a while, none of them spoke.
Then Michael broke the silence.
“Guys, we are almost done with school. Have you ever thought about what you want to become after graduation?”
John immediately closed his notebook.
“Of course,” he replied. “I want to become a politician.”
Michael raised his eyebrows.
“A politician?”
John nodded confidently.
“Yes. I want to serve my people and make a difference.”
Daniel smiled and closed his book.
“That’s a good dream,” he said. “For me, I want to become a journalist.”
Michael turned toward him.
“Journalist? That's actually a good one.”
Daniel smiled.
“Thank you.”
Michael then looked back at John.
“But you?”
John frowned slightly.
“What about me?”
Michael leaned forward with a mocking smile.
“Politics isn't for everybody, my friend.”
The smile on John's face slowly disappeared.
He knew Michael well enough to understand what was coming next.
Michael gave a small laugh.
“John, let's be honest. Politics isn't just about having a dream.”
“I know,” John replied quietly.
“You need connections. Money. People who can open doors for you.”
John said nothing.
Michael continued.
“Look at your family. Your parents can barely afford the things you need. How do you expect to enter politics?”
John lowered his eyes.
For a moment, he stared at the notebook on his lap.
Michael shrugged.
“You should think of something realistic.”
John slowly lifted his head.
“So because my parents are poor, I can't become successful?”
Michael shrugged again.
“I'm just telling you the truth.”
Daniel, who had been listening quietly, finally closed his book completely.
“Michael, why do you always talk to John like that?”
Michael looked at him.
“Because I'm being realistic.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You're being rude.”
Michael rolled his eyes.
“I'm only saying what everybody knows.”
Daniel turned toward John.
“John, don't listen to him.”
John looked at him.
Daniel's voice became softer.
“Where you come from doesn't determine where you're going.”
John remained silent.
“Don't allow anybody to convince you that your background is your destiny,” Daniel added.
A small smile returned to John's face.
“Thank you, Daniel.”
Michael laughed.
“You two can keep dreaming.”
Neither John nor Daniel answered him.
But John's dream remained alive.
Five Years Later
Five years passed.
The university campus looked different that evening. Instead of students rushing between lectures, the graduation grounds were filled with excitement. Graduates in their gowns celebrated with their families and friends. Cameras flashed everywhere as people took photographs and hugged one another.
Among the crowd stood the same three friends.
Michael stood on the left, still carrying himself with the same confidence.
John stood beside him, holding his graduation certificate tightly.
Daniel stood on the other side, smiling proudly.
They had made it.
After years of lectures, examinations, assignments and struggles, they were finally graduates.
Michael looked at the other two.
“Well… we finally made it.”
John smiled.
“Yes. Thank God.”
Daniel nodded.
“Congratulations, guys. We should be proud of ourselves.”
For a few seconds, the three friends simply looked at one another.
They knew things would soon change.
University had brought them together, but life outside the university could take them in completely different directions.
Then Michael's expression changed.
He looked directly at John.
“But John…”
John turned toward him.
“Yes?”
Michael stepped closer.
“I haven't forgotten what you said five years ago.”
John looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Michael smiled.
“You said you wanted to become a politician.”
John nodded.
“Yes. I still do.”
Michael laughed quietly.
“I'll be watching you.”
John frowned.
“Watching me?”
“Yes.”
Michael's smile became more challenging.
“I want to see how someone without money or connections is going to become a politician.”
John's expression became serious.
Before he could respond, Daniel stepped forward.
“Michael, enough.”
Michael turned toward him.
“What?”
“Why do you always have to put him down?”
Michael shook his head.
“I'm only telling him the reality of life.”
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
“Reality doesn't mean impossibility.”
Michael scoffed.
Daniel continued.
“You don't know what God has planned for John. So stop deciding his future for him.”
For the first time, Michael had nothing to say.
John looked from Daniel to Michael.
Then he finally spoke.
“Michael…”
Michael looked at him.
“You may believe that my parents' poverty will stop me.”
He paused.
“But I don't believe that.”
Michael remained silent.
John glanced briefly at Daniel before looking back at Michael.
“I don't know where life will take us after today.”
He took a slow breath.
“But one thing I know…”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“We will see.”
Daniel smiled proudly.
Michael's confident expression faded.
The three friends stood there for another moment before Michael finally turned and walked away.
John watched him leave.
Daniel remained beside him.
As the evening sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon, John looked toward the sky.
He had no money.
He had no powerful connections.
He had no idea what the future held.
But he still had his dream.
And sometimes, a dream is all a person needs to begin.
That day, three friends walked away from the university with three different dreams.
None of them knew that the next chapter of their lives would test their friendship, their character, and everything they believed about success.
To be continued…
