Bertrand Arramor has been a thief and assassin for nearly two hundred years. He's good at it, comfortable with it, and far too old to start developing a conscience now. Then he's given a contract to kill his own guildmaster. What should have been another job destroys the only life Bertrand has ever known. Abandoned by his guild, hunted for a crime he didn't commit, and haunted by memories he cannot explain, he is forced onto the roads of Andoria with little more than his skills and a growing suspicion that something is very wrong. Then Bertrand begins doing things an assassin shouldn't. He saves people he doesn't have to. Trusts people he shouldn't. Befriends a Fairy who gets entirely too close. And, worst of all, he starts to care. But becoming a better man doesn't make the world a better place. Something is moving behind the violence surrounding him, and Bertrand's search for the truth will carry him across Andoria and into a much larger game. Survival involves kings, killers, thieves, forgotten histories, and forces he doesn't yet understand. Bertrand has spent a lifetime learning how to survive in the dark. Now survival may require him to become the one thing he never intended to be. A hero.

Cynical Optimist : You can never go wrong with a B. E. Harmel story. The plot is intriguing and the protagonists are mature and sensible.I was a little disappointed with the stylized writing.
