The Final Whistle

The stadium lights of the Turin academy pitch glared down through the damp night air, completely drowned out by the deafening roar of the student section. On the field, they were a flawless machine. Soren Vance, the untouchable Captain, and Rick, his Vice-Captain, moved with a terrifying, synchronized brilliance. Every pass was psychic; every strike was lethal. They had just secured the championship, playing a mathematically perfect game.

But the entire school knew the open secret: they absolutely despised each other.

The shrill blast of the referee's final whistle had barely faded when the tension finally snapped. While the rest of the team rushed the field in a frenzy of cheers, Rick didn't celebrate. He marched straight toward the center circle, grabbed Soren by the collar of his sweat-soaked jersey, and drove a hard, stinging punch right into his jaw.

The nearest players gasped, freezing in their tracks.

"What the hell were you trying to do out there?!" Rick yelled, his chest heaving as he shoved Soren backward.

Soren’s head snapped to the side, a red mark instantly blooming on his sharp jawline. Slowly, he turned back. He didn't look angry. Instead, that familiar, infuriating smirk curled across his lips.

"I just won us the championship, Dick," Soren drawled, lazily wiping a thumb across his lower lip. "You're welcome."

"Don't play dumb with me, Vance!" Rick snapped, his face flushed with a furious, unexplainable heat. "You kept crowding me on the left wing! You deliberately ran into me on the corner kick, grabbing my waist—you were trying to distract me the entire second half! Keep your damn hands to yourself!"

Soren’s smile only deepened. Instead of backing off, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, forcing Rick to hold his ground as Soren completely invaded his personal space. The captain leaned down, his frame casting a heavy shadow over Rick, bringing his face so agonizingly close that Rick could feel the heat of his breath.

"You get distracted too easily," Soren whispered, his voice dropping into a dark, teasing rumble meant only for Rick’s ears. His heavy gaze flicked down to Rick's lips before slowly meeting his furious, wide eyes. "You're soft

Rick snapped.

He didn't think; he just lunged, tackling the captain right there on the grass. They went down in a tangle of limbs and mud. Rick swung wildly, but Soren was faster, shifting his weight to catch Rick’s wrists. But it wasn't a defensive block. Soren used the momentum to roll them, pinning Rick to the turf.

His hands didn't just hold Rick down; they mapped him. Soren's long fingers gripped Rick's hips entirely too hard, his knee sliding deliberately between Rick’s thighs, rubbing dangerously close as they wrestled.

"Get your fucking hands off me, Vance!" Rick snarled, thrashing under him, his face burning completely out of control.

"Why so tense, Dick?" Soren laughed, his chest vibrating against Rick's. He effortlessly deflected another wild swing, his grip sliding down to grip Rick's waist with maddening possessiveness. "You didn't mind when I grabbed you like this on the pitch. You actually leaned into it."

"I will kill you! I swear to God!" Rick yelled, trying to buck him off, but the friction of their bodies only made his skin flush hotter.

"Careful," Soren purred, lowering his head until his lips brushed the shell of Rick’s ear. "Everyone’s watching. You're squirming a little too perfectly under me right now."

"Vance! Rick! That is enough!" The booming voice of the head coach shattered the chaos, accompanied by the shrill blowing of a whistle.

Heavy footsteps pounded toward them. But Soren didn't immediately move. He stayed right where he was, his body a heavy, suffocating blanket over Rick. Then, in the split second before he was pulled away, Soren’s mocking smile vanished. His eyes darkened, fixing on Rick’s mouth.

He crashed his lips down against Rick’s in a bruising, absolute kiss. It tasted like sweat, dirt, and electricity.

Then, the world shattered.

The blinding stadium lights fractured, dissolving into the flickering, cold fluorescent buzz of the academy bathroom.

The roar of the crowd was gone, replaced by the sharp, echoing sound of Rick’s own desperate moans. He was shoved against the freezing porcelain of the sink, his hands gripping the edges so hard his knuckles were bone-white.

He was crying, cursing, completely falling apart. It was a punishment, a desperate attempt to feel anything other than the suffocating terror of his bankruptcy and the looming mafia contract.

"Faster," Rick choked out, his voice cracking as he slammed his eyes shut. "Please, just go faster."

There was a sharp sting, the faint metallic scent of blood mixing with the damp air of the showers, but he didn't care. He welcomed the pain. It anchored him. He just wanted to be hollowed out, to let Soren destroy him completely.

Soren was everywhere. His heavy, searing hands gripped Rick’s bruising hips. His lips dragged down the back of Rick's neck, biting down hard enough to leave a permanent mark.

"You're mine," Soren’s voice rasped in his ear, breathless and rough, a dark promise cutting through the agonizing pleasure. "Only mine, Rick."

"More," Rick sobbed into the dark, completely surrendering to the one person he was supposed to hate. "Fuck, just do whatever you want..."

"Neros... Are you in there?"

Rick’s eyes snapped open.

He shot up in bed, his chest heaving violently, gasping for air as if he had been drowning. The cold bathroom tiles and the phantom weight of Soren's hands instantly vanished, replaced by the silence of his sprawling, empty luxury hotel room.

His sheets were drenched in cold sweat. His hands were trembling.

"Neros?" The voice came through the heavy oak door again—his manager. "We need to leave for the press conference in ten."

Rick squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his shaking palms against his face. Five years. It had been five years since that night in the bathroom, five years since Soren had vanished without a trace, and his brain was still replaying it like a torture film.

He was a pro player now. He had the money, the fame, the Neros FC captain's armband. But sitting alone in the dark, his heart pounding out of his chest, Rick knew the pathetic truth. He was still just the broken eighteen-year-old boy, completely haunted by a ghost he couldn't let go of.

The Bill Comes Due

"Give me five minutes!" Rick shouted back, his voice rasping against the dry ache in his throat.

He didn't wait for a response. He dragged his exhausted body off the mattress and stumbled into the massive, marble-tiled bathroom. Turning the shower dial all the way up, he stepped under the spray, letting the scalding water beat down on his trembling shoulders.

He pressed his forehead against the wet glass, closing his eyes. He wasn't eighteen anymore. He was twenty-three. The captain of Neros FC. A multimillionaire with his face plastered on billboards across Europe. But under the water, stripped of the designer clothes and the arrogant public mask, he was just a terrified kid who had sold his soul to the devil.

Why did I do it? he asked himself for the millionth time, the water mixing with the hot tears he refused to shed in daylight.

Survival. It was always just about survival. When he turned eighteen, his world had caved in entirely. The bankruptcy had stripped his family of everything, and the sudden accident shortly after had left him an orphan. He had been left with nothing but crippling debt and the shattering realization that his football career was over before it even began.

Then came the contract from the Turin underworld.

It was a stupid, suicidal decision, but he had been backed into a corner. They offered to erase the debt, fund his sports agency, and guarantee his path to the pros. In exchange, he had a five-year grace period to live his dream. After that, he belonged to them. He had agreed to marry the faceless heir of a mafia empire. For money. For fame. For the game he loved more than his own life. He had traded himself off like a piece of meat.

For five years, he had been running from that signature. He had buried himself in training, in matches, in fake smiles for the cameras, pretending the hourglass wasn't running out of sand.

But the sand was gone. The five years were up.

Today was the day he had to fly back to Turin. He had to walk the dark path he had chosen, walk into that estate, and hand his life over to a monster he had never even met.

Rick reached out and blindly twisted the water off. He grabbed a towel, wrapped it around his waist, and stared at his hollow, exhausted reflection in the steamed-up mirror. There was no more running.

He turned the handle, opened the bathroom door, and stepped out into the cold air of the bedroom, ready to face his execution.

"So, Rick, the fans are dying to know," the interviewer leaned forward, a bright, manufactured smile plastered on her face. "You’ve just finished a record-breaking season with Neros FC. You have the fame, the wealth, the looks. Is there a lucky someone waiting behind the scenes to celebrate with you?"

Rick didn't miss a beat. He flashed his signature, camera-ready smile—the one he had perfected over five miserable years. "Just the game, Sarah. Football is my only love right now. I’m entirely single and completely focused on bringing home the Champions League trophy next season."

Lie. A massive, suffocating lie.

"Well, Neros FC is incredibly lucky to have you!" she beamed. "Thank you for your time, Rick."

"Always a pleasure."

As the director called cut and the blinding studio lights dimmed, Rick’s smile instantly evaporated. The mask dropped. He thanked the crew with polite, hollow nods, his stomach already twisting into painful knots as he walked down the dimly lit backstage corridor toward the VIP exit.

The heavy metal doors pushed open to the underground parking garage.

They were already there.

Three men in immaculate, tailored black suits stood beside a sleek, heavily armored black SUV. They weren't club security. They didn't wear stadium badges. They stood with the terrifying, utterly still posture of men who belonged to the underworld.

Rick froze, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of his neck. This is it. The grace period is over.

A violent tremor ran through his hands. He shoved them deep into his jacket pockets, cursing his desperate, naive eighteen-year-old self. What the hell did I do? His mind raced with horrifying images of the faceless man he was contractually obligated to marry. What if the heir was a sadistic, disfigured old man? What if he was a violent psychopath who treated his partners like disposable property? He was walking blindly into a gilded cage.

He was so terrified he couldn't even lift his head. Keeping his eyes glued to the grey concrete floor, he forced his leaden legs to move forward. He didn't speak to the guards, and they didn't speak to him. One of them simply stepped aside and pulled open the heavy rear door of the SUV.

Rick slid onto the plush leather seat, his heart hammering against his ribs. The door slammed shut behind him with a final, vault-like thud.

As the locks engaged with a sharp, electronic click, Rick squeezed his eyes shut. There was no more running. There was no escape.

He belonged to them now.

"Congratulations, sir. Truly," the lead guard said, his usually stoic expression softening into a genuine, respectful smile. "We're all very happy for you."

He looked up at them, his hands folding nervously in his lap. He wasn’t sure what to say right now, the heavy reality of the impending wedding still settling over his chest. "Thank you," he finally murmured, his voice sounding small in the quiet room. He hesitated, biting the inside of his cheek before speaking again. "About... about him. The man I'm going to marry soon. What is he actually like?"

The two bodyguards exchanged a quick, knowing look. They just smiled, a quiet warmth in their eyes that immediately eased a fraction of his anxiety.

"You don't need to worry, sir. He is a formidable man, but he is fiercely protective of what is his," the taller guard reassured him in a steady tone. "In fact, he's the one who asked us to congratulate you this morning. He wanted to make sure you woke up knowing you were on his mind."

Before he could fully process the weight of that statement, the lead guard stepped forward, reaching inside his tailored jacket. He withdrew a small, impeccably wrapped velvet box and held it out. "He also instructed us to give you this."

He held it carefully, as if it might break, and opened it quietly. The tiny hinges made no sound as the lid fell back. He stared inside, completely stunned. Resting on the dark satin was a gift he never knew anyone would give him—something so rare and impossibly tailored to a passing, long-forgotten wish of his that it stole the breath from his lungs.

He just blinked, his eyes darting from the velvet box to the broad backs of his protectors. "Are you sure this is the gift?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

The guards had already resumed their standard positions, their posture rigid and professional. They didn't turn to look at him.

"Yes," the lead guard said simply.

Tucked neatly beneath the gift was a small piece of heavy, cream-colored cardstock. He pulled it out with careful fingers. There was no name, no signature, and no formal greeting. Written across the center in sharp, elegant ink was just a single, flirty line:

Just a little something to keep your heart racing until I can do it myself.

Resting on the dark, plush satin was a sleek, matte-black titanium chronograph watch with a distinctive, deep sapphire dial.

Rick stared at it, his breath completely catching in his throat. It wasn't just an expensive watch; it was a ghost from a life he had completely buried. When he was seventeen, right before his family’s finances had violently crumbled into bankruptcy, he had seen this exact, limited-edition timepiece in a luxury magazine. He had been so obsessed with it that he had ripped the page out and taped it to the inside of his football academy locker.

He used to stare at it before every match. He had promised himself he would buy it with his first pro paycheck. But then the bankruptcy hit, his parents died, and that locker was cleared out. He had thrown the crumpled magazine page into the trash, burying the childish dream along with his freedom.

How?

Rick's mind raced, his fingers trembling slightly as he brushed the cold titanium face. He had never spoken about this watch in any public interview. He had never mentioned it to his current manager, his teammates at Neros FC, or the media. The only place that wish had ever existed was inside a rusty metal locker in a high school he hadn't stepped foot in for five years.

Did the mafia family investigate him that deeply? Did they track down his old high school academy teammates? Did they interrogate the janitor who cleared his locker? The sheer level of surveillance required to uncover a secret this small and insignificant was terrifying.

Yet, as he read the flirty, elegant handwriting on the note again—Just a little something to keep your heart racing until I can do it myself—a strange, confusing heat crept up the back of his neck. A mafia don was supposed to be a cold, calculating monster. A man like that shouldn't care about a bankrupt teenager's forgotten locker-room dream. He shouldn't be sending him inside jokes about racing hearts.

He was expecting a collar, but instead, he was handed a piece of his lost youth.

Rick swallowed hard, carefully snapping the velvet box shut and clutching it tightly in his lap. The suffocating terror he had felt stepping into the SUV was suddenly warring with a deep, unsettling curiosity.
