BLUE’S DIARY

Chapter One: Blue’s First Day at School

It was Blue’s first day at high school. Her mother dropped her off at the school and drove away.

Blue held her bag closely as she walked into the school, looking around nervously as she made her way down the walkway to her class.

Some girls looked at her and laughed.

“Oh my God, that hair is so dyed!” one girl said.

Blue ignored them and entered the classroom. She quietly took her seat.

After a few minutes, a slim-looking female teacher walked into the class.

Teacher: Good morning to you all.

Class: Good morning, Madam.

The teacher looked around the classroom.

Teacher: I can see a new face here. Miss, can you please tell us your name?

Blue stood up.

Blue: My name is Blue Mile.

A boy suddenly shouted:

Boy: Wow! Blue eyes!

The entire class burst into laughter, except for two girls, Mabel and Vera.

Mabel: I feel so sorry for her. It’s her first day and they are already making fun of her.

Vera: I feel sorry for her too.

The teacher frowned at the class.

Teacher: Class, do not make fun of her. And besides, how come you are named Blue?

Blue: Maybe it is because I have blue eyes.

Teacher: Hmm… that’s rare. African descendants usually don’t have blue eyes.

Blue: My dad is a white man. My mum is a black woman.

Akpos suddenly spoke up.

Akpos: Hmm… your mum si na…

Teacher: Akpos, go on your knees!

The entire class laughed again.

The teacher then turned to Blue.

Teacher: Akpos, you may now sit down. My dear, you are welcome to King’s Academy.

Blue: Thanks, Ma.

The teacher faced the class.

Teacher: Today I’m going to teach you about some African countries. But before I proceed, who can answer these questions?

She looked around.

Teacher: What is the capital of Nigeria?

Girl: Abuja.

Teacher: Good.

She asked another question.

Teacher: What is the capital of Turkey?

Boy: Ankara.

Teacher: Good. Now, Akpos, I will—

Akpos: Okay.

Teacher: What is the capital of Guinea-Bissau?

Akpos smiled confidently.

Akpos: Micheau… That simple question na bird cage na.

The teacher stared at him in confusion.

Teacher: What?

Akpos: Yes, Guinea bird cage.

The whole class started laughing.

The teacher shook her head.

Teacher: Akpos, please get out of my class and do not enter for the rest of the term!

Break Time

Blue was walking to the canteen during break when she mistakenly bumped into a girl.

The girl was drinking a can of Coca-Cola.

The drink spilled all over her.

It was Prisca.

Prisca: Are you blind?

Blue: No. I’m sorry.

Blue quickly tried to wipe the drink off with her handkerchief.

Prisca looked at her angrily.

Prisca: Get that dirty thing off me.

Her friends came over.

Sandra: What is happening here?

Prisca: I don’t know. This little thing just bumped into me.

Blue: Please, I’m very sorry.

Kate: So what can your sorry do?

Prisca: Please leave my sight.

Blue slowly walked away, feeling bad.

Sandra looked at Prisca.

Sandra: Isn’t that our new classmate?

Prisca: Yeah… that’s Blue. She doesn’t know who she’s messing with yet.

Kate: So do we like her?

Prisca rolled her eyes.

Prisca: No.

At Home

Later that day, Blue got home and saw her mum.

Mother: How was your first day at King’s Academy?

Blue: It was fine.

Mother: That’s good.

Blue walked into her room and shut the door.

She dropped her bag and sighed.

Blue: It was terrible.

She sat on her bed and brought out a diary.

She opened it and began to write.

Dear Diary,

My first day at King’s Academy wasn’t so good. I hope things will get better with time at school, and also I hope the girl who I spilled a drink on will forgive me as well.

Blue closed the diary and placed it beside her.

Just then, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown Number.

Blue frowned.

She picked up the phone.

Blue: Hello?

There was silence.

Blue waited.

Blue: Hello? Who is this?

Still nothing.

She pulled the phone away from her ear and looked at the screen.

The call was still connected.

Blue: Hello?

Suddenly, a voice spoke from the other end.

Unknown Voice: Blue…

Blue froze.

Her eyes widened.

Blue: Who are you?

There was another long silence.

Then the caller hung up.

Blue stared at her phone, completely confused.

She didn't know who had called her.

And she had no idea how that person knew her name.

Before she could think about it any further, her mother shouted from downstairs.

Mother: Blue, honey!

Blue quickly put her phone down.

Blue: Yes, Mum!

Mother: Dinner is ready.

Blue: Okay, Mum. I’m coming.

Blue looked at her phone one more time before leaving the room.

She had no idea that the strange phone call was only the beginning.
