THE FROST AND THE FAULT LINE.

The porcelain teacup didn't just break; it shattered into a constellation of jagged white shards across the imported Danish oak floorboards, each piece catching the harsh, slate-gray light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Adane Johnson—Adah to the few people who hadn't yet proven themselves unworthy of the syllable—didn't flinch. She kept her chin tilted up, her posture rigid, and her dark eyes locked onto the towering man standing a mere three inches too close for professional comfort.

"You missed a spot," George murmured. His voice wasn't raised. It was low, rough, and dangerously intimate, carrying the flat, uncompromising cadence of a man accustomed to having his entire world bow to his whim. He looked down at the fragments of porcelain, then slowly raised his pale, piercing gaze to burn into hers. "Or is deliberate sabotage part of your standard housekeeping portfolio in Copenhagen, Ms. Johnson?"

Adah felt a hot, reckless spike of fury flare right beneath her ribs, instantly melting away the lingering chill of the Danish winter storm howling outside. She had survived the suffocating heat and broken promises of Dubai; she had crossed continents with a shattered heart, a locked-down body, and a zero-tolerance policy for arrogant men who thought a paycheck bought a person's soul. She certainly wasn't going to tremble before a blue-eyed Viking who looked like he carved his entire personality out of a glacier.

Except his gaze wasn't icy right now. It was scorching. His eyes raked slowly over her face, lingering with heavy, undisguised hunger on the curve of her lips before dropping to the sharp rise and fall of her chest beneath her cream-colored linen blouse.

"If I wanted to sabotage your precious minimalist estate, Mr. Sterling, I wouldn't waste a vintage teacup," Adah retorted, her voice dripping with a crisp, Ghanaian warmth that refused to be frozen out. She didn't drop to her knees to clean up the mess. Instead, she stepped forward, invading his space, her heavy locs brushing her shoulder. "I’d start with your heating system. Though judging by the frostbite on your disposition, it wouldn't make much difference."

A muscle twitched violently along George's jawline. For a fleeting second, something dangerously close to shock flickered in those cold eyes—an unfamiliar emotion from a man who usually commanded absolute, terrified obedience from everyone on his payroll.

"You have a remarkably dangerous tongue for someone standing on thin ice," George said, his voice dropping an octave as he closed the remaining distance.

He didn't just back her up; he backed her straight against the reinforced glass window, caging her in with the broad, solid wall of his chest. The sheer, heavy heat radiating off him clashed violently with the freezing winter air outside. He was broad-shouldered, stubborn-jawed, and wrapped in a thick cable-knit sweater that smelled of cedarwood and pure masculine authority.

"Most people cry or pack their bags when I remind them of their incompetence," George growled softly, bringing his face dangerously close to hers. She could feel his warm breath ghosting across her lips.

"Most people probably haven't survived working twelve-hour shifts in a gilded cage in the Middle East only to be treated like furniture," Adah fired back, her pulse hammering wildly against her ribs, completely betrayed by how intensely her body reacted to his nearness. She wasn't terrified; she was aching, hyper-aware of every single place his body nearly touched hers. "So spare me the boardroom intimidation tactics, George. I'm an estate manager, not your toy."

Silence slammed back down between them, heavy, suffocating, and dripping with raw, unadulterated sexual tension. The anger was a thin mask masking an explosive, mutual craving that neither of them wanted to admit.

George’s gaze locked onto her mouth, dark and turbulent, his fingers twitching at his sides as if fighting a violent internal war not to reach out and pull her flush against him.

And right there, amidst the shattered glass of a broken cup, Adah felt a terrifying, electric jolt shoot straight through her padlocked heart—the undeniable, breathless realization that her worst enemy was the only man alive who could make her burn.
