Your comments, theories, reactions, and reviews genuinely mean a lot to me. Whether you’re screaming over a scene, getting angry at a character, predicting what will happen next, or simply enjoying the journey, don’t hesitate to share it in the comments.

I especially love hearing your thoughts about Elena and Alexander’s relationship, the contract marriage, their complicated past, and of course, Ethan and Lydia’s chaotic little enemies-to-lovers story.

If you enjoy a chapter, leaving a comment or review is one of the best ways to support the story and encourage me to keep writing. Even a short comment makes a difference.

So please read, react, theorize, and tell me what you think.

And remember—nothing is ever as simple as it looks in this story.

Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Regency Hotel hummed with the quiet, expensive energy of the nation’s corporate elite. Crystal chandeliers threw sharp reflections across tables draped in dark velvet, where executives in tailored tuxedos and evening gowns conversed over vintage champagne.

Alexander Blackwood sat at the center table reserved for top nominees, leaning back with effortless grace. Beside him sat his COO and long-time friend, Thomas Reed, along with Alexander’s secretary, who was meticulously reviewing the evening’s schedule on a tablet.

“The board is already preparing the press release for tomorrow morning,” Thomas said, taking a slow sip from his glass. “They’re just waiting for the official envelope to open.”

“It’s barely a formality at this point,” Alexander replied smoothly, adjusting the cuff of his jacket. “We’ve dominated the quarterly figures for three consecutive years. The award is ours.”

His secretary glanced up from her tablet, nodding in agreement. “Every major publication has you framed as the frontrunner, Mr. Blackwood. There isn’t a competitor in our sector with matching numbers.”

Before Alexander could reply, the sudden shift in the room’s energy caught his attention.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom opened, and a woman walked in.

She wore a striking black dress—fitted, modern, and undeniably high-fashion—that struck a flawless balance between absolute power and quiet elegance. The rich fabric was set off by tailored lines, paired with sparkling diamond accessories at her throat and wrist, and sharp, classic red-soled Louis Vuitton heels that clicked with measured authority against the polished marble floor.

Alexander paused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he watched her move toward a private table near the stage.

There was something undeniably familiar about her profile, the posture, the quiet intensity in her eyes. A faint, buried recollection pulled at the edge of his memory, but he couldn’t put a finger on where he had seen her before.

He leaned over toward Thomas. “Who is that?”

Thomas followed his gaze, taking out his phone to check the guest list. “That’s E. Hart. CEO of Vanguard Solutions.”

Alexander frowns slightly, searching his memory. “Hart... I know that name. I know her, but I can’t place where.”

His secretary quickly pulled up Vanguard’s executive file. “She keeps a remarkably low profile with the media, Mr. Blackwood, but her company quietly pulled off a massive restructuring in the logistics market this year. Vanguard swept past every major growth benchmark in thirty-six months.”

Alexander kept his gaze on her. The woman sat down gracefully, barely glancing around the room, completely unbothered by the eyes tracking her movement.

The lights in the hall dimmed, signaling the start of the main event. After a few preliminary categories, the presenter stepped up to the microphone, holding the gold envelope for the evening’s highest honor: Business Leader of the Year.

“This year’s recipient has completely redefined market execution,” the presenter announced, opening the envelope. “The award goes to... Elena Hart, Founder and CEO of Vanguard Solutions!”

A brief, stunned silence swept over the Blackwood table before polite applause broke out across the ballroom.

Alexander froze for a split second, his mind replaying the name. Elena Hart.

Elena stood up smoothly, adjusting her dress. She didn’t look thrilled, nor did she look overwhelmed. She walked up the stairs to the stage with calm, measured steps, her Louis Vuitton heels clicking firmly against the wooden floor.

Alexander watched her closely, his eyes locked on her face as she reached the podium.

As she took the glass trophy from the presenter, her eyes swept over the front tables. For a fraction of a second, her gaze landed directly on Alexander—cold, neutral, and completely devoid of emotion—before drifting away as if he were just another face in the crowd.

She stepped up to the microphone. The room waited for the standard, lengthy acceptance speech about vision, hard work, and gratitude.

Elena looked out at the audience, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly through the speakers.

“Time is money,” Elena said simply, her tone firm and concise. “And I won’t waste yours. Thank you.”

Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked off the stage, holding the trophy at her side, leaving the entire ballroom in a stunned, fascinated silence before the applause finally erupted.

Alexander remained seated, his hands slowly coming together to clap, his mind racing as the name and the face finally connected in his memory.

Night had settled over the city, and the sprawling Blackwood estate was completely quiet.

Alexander sat alone in his high-ceilinged study, the only illumination coming from the soft glow of the fireplace and the glass of scotch resting untouched in his hand. The crystal award trophy he usually brought home every year was missing from his desk. In its place was the memory of the cold, dismissive look Elena Hart had given him on that stage.

Elena Hart.

He leaned his head back against the leather chair, closing his eyes, and let his mind drift back ten years.

It was the final month of their senior year of high school. Alexander had already been the undisputed center of attention—handsome, wealthy, and the sole heir to Blackwood Enterprises.

He remembered walking down the quiet, sunlit hallway near the school library, carrying a stack of files for a student council meeting. He had been in a rush, irritated by some minor detail, when a girl stepped out from behind the door, blocking his path.

She was quiet, wearing an oversized, faded uniform sweater and thick, thick-rimmed glasses that hid half her face. Her hands were trembling as she clutched a small, carefully folded note to her chest.

Elena.

“A-Alexander,” she had stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, her cheeks burning red. “Can I... can I talk to you for a second?”

He had paused, looking at her with clear impatience, not even bothering to stop walking entirely. “Make it fast. I have a meeting.”

Gathering every ounce of courage she possessed, she swallowed hard and looked up at him through her glasses. “We’ve been in the same grade for two years now... and I’ve liked you since the very first day. I just... I wanted to tell you before we graduate. I really like you, Alexander.”

Alexander had stopped. He didn’t look touched. He didn’t even look polite.

He had looked her up and down—taking in her scuffed shoes, her baggy sweater, her anxious posture—and let out a sharp, mocking breath.

“Are you serious right now?” Alexander had said, his tone dripping with cold condescension. He stepped closer, towering over her until she shrank back against the library door. “Look at yourself, Elena. Look at your value compared to mine. My father owns half this city, and you’re just some nobody from a struggling family who can barely afford tuition.”

Elena’s face had drained of all color. Her eyes widened behind her glasses, brimming with sudden, painful tears.

“You’re not even remotely my type,” Alexander had continued brutally, without a drop of mercy. “You are nothing to me. Don’t ever approach me like this again—it’s embarrassing.”

He had shoved past her without another word, leaving her standing alone in the hallway, clutching her stupid little note while silent tears streamed down her face.

Back in the present, Alexander opened his eyes in the dark study.

He stared at his reflection in the glass window. The girl he had humiliated, the girl he had treated like absolute dirt because of his own bloated teenage arrogance, was the same woman who had just walked past him with Louis Vuitton heels, covered in diamonds, taking the title he believed belonged to him.

A cold, uneasy knot tightened in his chest.

Across the city, inside a sleek, modern penthouse high above the illuminated skyline, the night was entirely still.

Elena walked into her quiet bedroom, her Louis Vuitton heels clicking one last time against the hardwood floor before she unstrapped them and set them neatly in her closet. She removed her diamond necklace, placing the sparkling jewelry onto her marble vanity table, right next to the crystal award for Business Leader of the Year.

She picked up the heavy trophy, feeling its sharp edges and cold weight. A faint, quiet sigh escaped her lips.

Setting the award back down, she walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the distant headlights stream down the highway. Seeing Alexander Blackwood at the ballroom tonight had pulled a long-buried memory back into the light.

She leaned her forehead gently against the cool glass and closed her eyes, remembering ten years ago.

She had been sixteen when she first saw him across the crowded high school courtyard. He had been standing under the shade of the oak trees, surrounded by laughter and attention, radiating an effortless authority that drew everyone toward him. To a shy, quiet girl from a struggling family who usually tried to make herself invisible, Alexander had seemed like someone from an entirely different world.

For two long years, she had watched him silently. She remembered sitting three rows behind him in class, carefully taking notes while keeping him in the corner of her vision. She remembered the sharp pang of jealousy she had fought so hard to bury whenever he walked down the hallways arm-in-arm with the popular, glamorous girls of their grade. She had trained herself to look down at her shoes, telling herself over and over that she had no right to feel jealous—that a boy like Alexander Blackwood would never notice someone like her anyway.

Until that one afternoon in their senior year.

She had spent three nights building up the courage, writing and rewriting a small note until her fingers cramped. She had convinced herself that even if he didn’t feel the same way, at least he would know her truth before they graduated and went their separate ways.

She remembered the exact coldness of the hallway air behind the library. She remembered how her heart had hammered against her ribs as she stepped out to block his path.

And then she remembered his face.

The absolute disgust in his eyes. The brutal, mocking laughter in his voice as he towered over her, tearing her pride to pieces. Look at your value compared to mine... You are nothing to me.

Elena opened her eyes in the quiet dark of her penthouse.

Her reflection in the window was no longer the timid girl with thick glasses and a faded sweater. The girl who had cried herself to sleep on her thin bedroom mattress ten years ago was gone. In her place stood a woman who had fought through exhaustion, built an empire from nothing, and proven her worth to a world that had tried to dismiss her.

Elena stepped back from the glass, her expression setting into an unshakeable, calm mask. She turned off the bedroom light, sliding beneath the silk sheets, letting the darkness swallow the past whole.

She didn’t need his apology. She didn’t need his validation. And she certainly wasn’t that fragile girl anymore.
