Prologue – Back When Things Were Simple
Buffy Summers remembered the summers best.
Running barefoot through the grass behind the old apartment complex. Will trailing behind her, always a little breathless, always trying to keep up. He’d been small, bookish, and painfully earnest—more likely to quote poetry than throw a punch.
She used to call him “Will.” He used to call her “Buff.”
They’d promised to stay friends forever.
But forever ended the day Drusilla walked into Will’s life like a storm in velvet. And Angel—older, cooler, magnetic—became the center of Will’s universe. Suddenly Will wasn’t Will anymore. He was Spike. And Spike didn’t have room for childhood friends.
Especially not her.
He mocked her in the hallways. Laughed with Dru when she cried. Picked fights just to impress Angel.
Buffy learned to stop expecting apologies.
