Chapter 1

Sam woke before dawn, and the world around her felt wrong in a way that had no edges, no language, only weight. The ceiling above her was a slab of gray stone, the kind of color that belonged to morgues and winter oceans. A thin blade of light pressed through the blinds, pale and merciless. And beneath it, threading through the silence, was the soft, steady breathing of someone who should never have been there.

Memory did not return gently. It rose like a tide of cold water.

She slept with a patient.

A hand. A whispered word. The moment suspended between impulse and choice — the moment she had known exactly what she was doing, had felt the line beneath her feet, and stepped over it anyway.

Her stomach tightened. Her pulse throbbed in her throat.

She lay perfectly still, as if movement itself could summon judgment. Even shifting beneath the sheets felt dangerous, like disturbing the surface of a lake that hid something drowned beneath it. She feared waking Bunty. She feared the conversation that would follow. She feared silence even more.

But what she feared most was the truth she could no longer outrun: It had not happened to her. She had allowed it.

She had been trained for this — sculpted by years of supervision, ethics seminars, case conferences where other clinicians’ failures were dissected with surgical horror. She had spoken the vocabulary of danger fluently: transference, dependency, power imbalance, exploitation, countertransference. She had written those words in charts. She had taught them to residents. She had believed that knowledge was armor.

It was not.

You were supposed to be the safe person.

She slept with a patient.

The thought arrived without drama, without mercy. That made it worse.

Bunty had trusted her with the fragile architecture of her inner life — the fears she hid from everyone else, the humiliations, the old wounds she had carried like stones in her pockets. Piece by piece, Bunty had handed Sam the map of her loneliness. And Sam had used that intimacy for something it was never meant to become.

She wanted to call it love. The word came easily, like a warm lie.

I love her.

But even in the half-dark, she knew love was not supposed to demand that a patient abandon the protection of the relationship meant to heal her. Love was not supposed to make Bunty responsible for Sam’s emptiness. Love was not supposed to slip through the door marked treatment and pretend it had arrived by fate.

She imagined Bunty waking beside her.

Would she feel comfort? Or shame? Would she feel obligated now — to protect Sam’s career, her reputation, their secret? Would she think: If I regret this, will she stop caring for me?

Sam closed her eyes.

She wanted to believe Bunty had chosen freely. But she knew better than anyone that freedom inside a therapeutic bond was a complicated, haunted thing. A patient could say yes and still be answering years of abandonment, fear, admiration, hunger for approval. She could mistake attention for safety. She could confuse being seen by a clinician with being loved by an equal.

And Sam had known that. That was the unbearable part.

She slept with a patient.

Not that she had made a mistake. That she had recognized the danger and placed her own want above Bunty’s welfare anyway.

Her phone sat on the nightstand like a verdict.

There were things she should do. Document nothing false. Move out. Disappear. Throw her life away if necessary. Never see Bunty again. Keep paying for the apartment so Bunty and Maggie would not lose their home. Arrange for someone else — Margaret — to help her. Call an ethics consultant. Call an attorney. Tell the truth, even if it destroyed her.

None of it felt noble. It felt like sentencing herself.

Outside, the sky slowly paled as darkness bled into morning. Bunty could wake at any moment. Sam could not bear to see her asleep—or imagine facing her awake.

Now she understood how little good intentions mattered once a boundary had been crossed. You could not undo it. You could not make it harmless by being sorry. You could only stop. You could only refuse to deepen the harm.

Beside her, Bunty shifted in sleep.

Sam did not reach for her.

She sat up quietly, gathered the t‑shirt she had worn the night before. The room tilted. Sam had to sit back down.. She had to sit back down. The weight of what she had done settled into her bones, heavy and cold.

Her legs felt numb. Her future felt smaller. And dawn kept coming anyway.

She slept with a patient.

Biva: Quite good for a novella. Impressive writing style and we'll edited. Just one thing- Karla keeps referring herself to a stray cat and while at first it makes sense the analogy gets stale after a while.
