Chapter one
Imade my father proud.
I was his only child.
Well… his only true child, at least.
After my mother died from uterine cancer, my father was never the same after losing his mate and he never remarried, or chose a mate. Instead, he had many mistresses, and over the years, several illegitimate children were born.
But I was different.
I was his only legitimate heir who could take over the pack. The one who would carry his name.
I was proud to be his daughter.
I carried his Alpha blood, and the blood of my mother.
I was told from a young age that I was rare. That there weren’t many women born with Alpha blood, and those who were were considered incredibly valuable.
I was stronger than most wolves.
Even some men.
My father used to tell me how proud he was of me.
How special I was.
How I would bring great things to our family and I believed him.
I thought being his daughter meant I was loved but what I didn’t understand that, to him, I was also an opportunity.
when my father wanted to step down from his position as Alpha. He had one problem. He didn’t want his only legitimate daughter to become Alpha, what he wanted was a son, a man to take over his place.
Someone who could take over his pack and strengthen our family’s position.
So instead of letting me choose my own future, he chose one for me. I was essentially traded away like a bargaining chip.
A way to strengthen our pack.
A way to secure an alliance.
He spoke to the Moonlight Pack in Oregon, and that was how Jason became my chosen mate.
I remember the first time I was told.
I felt bad.
I knew Jodie. We were good friends.
I remembered going to the same pack school together. It wasn’t common for wolves to attend school with humans. We usually had schools specifically for werewolves, and sometimes wolves from packs states away would attend the same schools.
I knew Jodie and Jason had a relationship.
What I didn’t know was that he was her mate.
when I made the move down to Oregan I was excited at first. I thought maybe this was what the Moon Goddess wanted.
Maybe this was my destiny.
what I didn’t know then that my father wasn’t giving me a future. He was giving me away, and Jason wasn’t going to become my mate because he loved me.
He became my mate because I was valuable.
Because my blood was valuable.
Because our union would benefit my father’s pack.
I didn’t understand any of that back then.
I was just a daughter trying to make her father proud.
And I did. I gave him exactly what he wanted.
A strong Alpha bloodline.
A powerful alliance.
And eventually… An heir.
But I never imagined that the same blood my father once called my greatest gift would become the reason I would lose everything.
—
I had been hiding away with the Elders.
I had told them everything.
What Jason had done to me.
How he had forced himself on me, how he had become feral.. How I had become pregnant against my will.
The Elders promised they would protect me for the time being, but they told me I needed to find a pack to go home to wether it was my fathers pack or a new one..
I understood. I couldn’t stay hidden forever.
It had been two weeks since they told me that.
Two weeks of living in fear. Of wondering what Jason would do if he found me, what he would do to Jodie, what would he do to his unborn child.
Many things were running through my mind during the time I was waiting for the moment for when I felt free.
I was walking through the castle gardens when it happened.
Pain exploded through my chest.
I stopped in my tracks. It felt like someone had reached inside me and ripped my heart straight out.
I couldn’t breathe.
My knees nearly gave out beneath me.
I grabbed onto the stone railing beside me, trying to steady myself.
“What is happening?”
My heart was pounding painfully against my ribs.
Then I felt it.
The bond. Something had happened to Jason, then i felt it snap.
“Oh no.”
I didn’t want to believe it. But deep down, I already knew.
I quickly ran toward the Elders’ office.
I threw the doors open without knocking.
The Elders were in the middle of a meeting, but I didn’t care.
“I-I think…”
I struggled to catch my breath.
“I think Jason… died.”
The room went silent.
The Elders looked at one another before giving a small nod.
It was almost like they were having a conversation without saying a word.
They weren’t mind-linking.
They simply knew what the other was thinking.
After hundreds of years together, they had learned to understand each other without needing words.
They were some of the oldest werewolves alive. Some were more than four hundred years old.
Our kind didn’t age as quickly as humans, but we weren’t immortal.
We could still become sick, we could still develop cancer. We could still die.
Our first ancestor had been human before the Moon Goddess blessed him, and although her blessing changed our kind, it didn’t make us invincible.
One of the Elders finally looked back at me.
“Give us a moment, child.”
I nodded.
I slowly closed the door behind me.
For the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe.
Jason was gone.
My mate was gone.
And somehow, instead of feeling grief… I felt free.
I could finally leave.
I could finally go home.
I could finally start over. Or at least, that’s what I thought.
