Stormy Day
A Stormy Day
When the winds rolled over the hills of the grasslands, Kryrella sat patiently under a small tree.
She yawned, stretching her arms. The rays of sunlight fell onto her shoulders.
Clouds from afar were folding on top of each other, covering half the sky in a dark-grey, with a purple undertone.
As the winds blew harder, the thunder began rolling in the distance.
“Ugh, I wonder if Zevor thinks it’s gonna rain.” Kryrella exhaled, her back resting against the bark of the tree.
Just then, Zevor appeared beyond the hills.
As Kryrella laid her eyes on him, the air was warmed.
The thunder moaned again, followed by Zevor’s vermillion scarf flapping in the wind, his light brown sweater shielding him from the wind.
The dust below his feet, like plumes of the clouds above.
Kryrella smiled. It reached from cheek to cheek.
Her face, like rubies gleaming in the sunlight.
“Hi!” She waved eagerly.
“Hi!” Zevor waved back.
She was distraught.
She rubbed her fingers against the fibers of her clothes.
She looked around aimlessly, scratching her arm and clearing her throat.
“Hey what’s wrong?” Zevor asked as he walked over to her.
“-It’s nothing- I…” Kryrella paused, quickly turning her head, swatting her hair away from her mouth,”-Hey, do you think it’s gonna rain?”
Zevor sat beside her. He chuckled softly, “Hm…well, I have no doubt in my mind.”
He looked over at Kryrella, the soft yet sharp blue hues in his eyes pared through the moist air.
Kryrella placed her hand on the dark and coarse soil.
She leaned closer to Zevor, “Um…that’s nice. Uhh… well… never mind.”
“No wait, what? What is it, tell me.” Zevor’s voice was carried by the wind.
“No-I’ll tell you later maybe.” Kryrella scratched her head.
“Ah-wait! Kryrella…you can’t ask me to meet you here and then not…speak to me. What’s on your mind? …Is it something in particular?”
Kryrella’s lips shuddered.
Her eyelashes fluttered.
Her eyes were stuck facing the dirt.
She dug her nails into the soil and balled her fist.
Her skin tingled.
She licked her lips.
Finally, she inhaled deeply and released all of the tension tightening in her chest, “Right. Uh… I’m… really sorry. I don’t know where I’m going with this.”
“Woah, hey what’s wrong?” Zevor scooted in closer, the thunder rumbling behind him.
“I don’t…I don’t know what I’m doing okay, I got it out!”
“What do you mean you don’t know what you’re doing?”
“I mean I don’t know what I’m doing! I mean I feel so…difficult sometimes like every time I speak with you or Zazzory or anyone else, I’m just…wasting your time.”
“What!? Kryrella what are you talking about?”
“-I don’t know! -All I’m saying is, I’m sorry. For being…stubborn and difficult.”
Zevor’s eyes widened, “...Okay, look Kryrella, first, I don’t know where this is coming from. And second, even if you are a difficult person that doesn’t mean we don’t like spending time with you.”
“-That’s not what I mean!”
“Then, what did you mean?”
“...How do I know that no matter what I do, you won’t stop loving me?” Her eyes welled.
Zevor creased his mouth open but no words came out. Then, he spoke softly, “Comere K.” He opened his arms and swung his hands into his chest, “Come on.”
Kryrella looked away, stripping the bark off of the tree.
She waited a couple seconds and then looked up.
Zevor sat in front of her with his arms still out and his eyes beaming into hers.
The sun behind him-like melting gold.
Reluctantly, she crawled into his arms.
Zevor placed his back against the flayed bark of the tree.
He looked up into the darkening sky, “Understand this K…there isn’t a world or kingdom out there that I don’t love you. It’s the same with Zazzory and Tyreethyll and everyone else.”
Zevor gently scratched the top of her head.
The wind started to gain speed.
“Why did you ask me that?”
Kryrella choked on her words, “B-because…I…I thought I should I guess. I mean, I don’t feel…great…all the time. I don’t…sometimes I feel…bad. Very, very bad.”
“What do you mean very bad?”
“-I feel! …I feel like…scare-d… or…” She threw up her hands, “Great. Now I don’t know what I feel- I mean how I feel-er, know how I feel…I guess…ugh!”
“...Kryrella, listen to me. Relax. You are overthinking a lot. You are one of the most ornate and zealous things in my life, you and Zazzory both.” Zevor tapped the top of her head.
“You are very gifted.
You are expressive and amazingly talented at so many things.
For example, you love decorating and describing things in specific ways that make the ordinary seem extraordinary and the extraordinary spectacular.”
Kryrella leaned deeper into him.
“My little sister…is the most important aspect of my life. Yes, you are difficult and yes you’re a lot to handle, I’m not sugar-coating anything for you because I love you so much you deserve truth. But don’t put yourself down, do you understand?”
Kryrella shook her head slowly.
She began fidgeting with her fingers, snapping her nails under them.
“Zevor?” she said as she placed a dirty nail in her mouth.
“Yes?”
“...Do you…still think it’ll…rain?”
He smiled, teeth out, “Well…I still have no doubt in my mind that it will.”
“...If so…we should…go inside.” Her voice cracked.
“You know what, we’ll be fine. Let’s stay out here and…watch the weather roll by. We can wait for Zazzory to get home while we’re out here.”
“...Yeah. …That sounds nice.”
“Yeah.”
“Zevor?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you really think I’m…ornate?”
“Hmm, let’s see…
O for overzealous.
R for radiant.
N for nurturing- the way you care for plants and people.
A for altruistic.
T for troublemaker. And-
E for emotional. Let’s see…all together…yep, that spells ornate!”
“Heheh! You just made all that up!”
“No I didn’t. Trust me you are those things!”
“No I’m not!” Kryrella exploded in laughter.
The leaves captured the breeze.
The sky roared and was completely desaturated.
Lightning flashed in the clouds.
The grass braced for each wave of wind.
“Uh-oh. Now that sounds… like a storm!” He snickered.
“Let’s let the rain sing to us shall we?”
“Mhm.” Kryrella calmly agreed.
Zevor’s right eye shifted to a shimmering yellow. He held onto Kryrella tightly.
He looked up.
A small raindrop got close to Zevor, but the raindrop did not touch him.
When the rain began to pour, it washed over them.
“Ah, well…now we can enjoy the rain without getting wet.
Kryrella looked up in amazement.
The clouds above her, churning.
She then looked back down, “I really want to be able to control my spectrumaid.”
“Don’t worry. You will be able to control it one day. Zazzory and I will help you.”
“...Okay.”
As Zevor held Kryrella close and tight, the rain sang to them, the thunder rolled around them, caressing and holding them, the lightning illuminated the grasslands for them and the wind rocked them.
And Zevor and Kryrella peacefully fell asleep.
