The Gentlemen Return
THE GENTLEMEN RETURN
A complete, atmospheric one-shot: emotionally rich, cinematic, character-driven, and tense. No gore. No silliness. Just dread, silence, and the terror of losing Buffy.
The first sign is the moon.
A thin, sickle-sharp crescent hanging over Sunnydale like a blade. Willow notices it through her dorm window and shivers without knowing why.
The second sign is the scream.
Or rather—the absence of one.
Because when Buffy Summers vanishes from her bedroom sometime between 2:14 and 2:17 a.m., no one hears a thing. Not her gasp. Not the struggle. Not the soft, elegant glide of the Gentlemen’s feet across her floor.
By morning, Sunnydale is silent.
Again.
THE SCOOBIES DISCOVER THE TRUTH
Giles is the first to realize what’s happened.
He wakes with a start, throat tight, reaching for a voice that isn’t there. His mug shatters on the floor. He tries to curse—nothing. He tries to call Buffy—nothing.
Then he sees the envelope on his desk.
Cream colored. Sealed with wax. Stamped with a symbol he hoped never to see again.
A smiling, skeletal face.
Giles’ blood runs cold.
He tears it open.
Inside is a single card.
A drawing.
Buffy, asleep in her bed. Four Gentlemen hovering above her. Their long, pale fingers reaching.
And beneath it, in ornate script:
“We require the Slayer’s heart.”
Giles drops the card.
He doesn’t need a voice to scream.
THE SEARCH BEGINS
The Scoobies gather in the Magic Box.
Willow’s eyes are red. Xander is pacing so hard the floorboards groan. Anya clutches a crossbow like it’s a teddy bear. Tara keeps glancing at the door, as if Buffy might walk in at any moment.
Giles slams the Gentlemen’s card onto the table.
They all lean in.
Willow signs shakily: Buffy? Taken?
Giles nods.
Xander signs back, hands jerky with panic: We beat them before. We can again.
Giles shakes his head. He writes on a whiteboard:
They didn’t come for voices this time. They came for Buffy.
Willow’s breath catches. Tara squeezes her hand.
Anya signs: Why her? Why now?
Giles writes:
Because she’s the only thing they fear. And they want to unmake that fear.
The room goes still.
BUFFY WAKES
Somewhere underground—deep, cold, and echoing—Buffy opens her eyes.
She’s strapped to a stone table. Her wrists bound with silver filaments that burn her skin. Her throat tight with the familiar, suffocating silence.
The Gentlemen float around her in a slow, graceful circle.
Their smiles widen.
Buffy pulls at the restraints. They tighten.
A Gentleman leans close, his face inches from hers. His grin stretches impossibly wide.
He places a hand over her heart.
Buffy’s eyes blaze with fury.
She can’t scream. She can’t call for help.
But she can fight.
She jerks upward, slamming her forehead into the Gentleman’s face. He reels back, still smiling, but the crack in his porcelain skin spreads like a spiderweb.
Buffy smirks.
Even voiceless, she’s still the Slayer.
THE SCOOBIES FOLLOW THE CLUES
Willow and Tara work together, hands moving in silent synchronicity, weaving a tracking spell that glows faintly blue.
The light flickers.
Then shoots toward the floor.
Down.
Down.
Down.
Xander grabs weapons. Anya grabs more weapons. Giles grabs a flask of holy water and a very sharp axe.
They descend into the tunnels beneath Sunnydale.
The silence is suffocating.
Every footstep echoes like a heartbeat.
Willow signs: They’re close.
Giles nods.
They move faster.
THE RESCUE
They burst into the chamber just as a Gentleman raises a silver scalpel over Buffy’s chest.
Buffy’s eyes widen in relief.
Xander charges first, yelling a battle cry that no one can hear. He tackles the Gentleman, sending the scalpel skittering across the floor.
Willow and Tara unleash a silent blast of magic that sends two Gentlemen crashing into the wall.
Anya fires a crossbow bolt straight through another’s head. It cracks like porcelain.
Giles swings his axe with grim precision.
Buffy, freed by the chaos, rips her restraints apart and leaps to her feet.
She grabs the fallen scalpel.
And with one swift, furious motion—
She slices open the throat of the last Gentleman.
A scream explodes through the chamber.
Not from Buffy.
From the Gentlemen.
All of them.
Their bodies convulse. Their smiles shatter. Their forms collapse into dust.
And suddenly—
Voices return.
Buffy gasps.
Willow sobs. Xander yells, “Never again!” Anya mutters, “I hate floating murder men.” Tara whispers, “Buffy, are you okay?” Giles breathes, “Thank God.”
Buffy looks at all of them.
Her family.
Her voice trembles.
“I knew you’d find me.”
EPILOGUE
Back in the Magic Box, Buffy sits with a blanket around her shoulders, sipping tea.
Giles watches her with quiet worry.
“You’re sure you’re alright?”
Buffy nods.
“They wanted my heart,” she says softly. “But they forgot something.”
“What’s that?” Willow asks.
Buffy smiles.
“I don’t fight alone.”
The Scoobies exchange looks—tired, relieved, fiercely loyal.
Outside, the moon is full again.
Whole.
And Sunnydale breathes.
