Chapter 1 — It Couldn't Be Him
Alina's POV
Are you serious? You really wanna break up? But why? What will happen to me if you leave me?”
I tried to breathe, but my throat felt tight. My chest hurt, and my heart was beating so hard that I could hear it in my ears.
Why is this happening? Why is my heart beating so fast?
Am I going to die?
No…
I haven't even started my future yet.
I have to graduate college. I have to get a good job. I have to take care of Mom.
Then why does my chest hurt so much?
It felt like something inside me was breaking.
Is this really the end? Am I going to die here?
A loud alarm suddenly broke the silence.
My eyes flew open.
My heart was still beating fast as I lay frozen on my bed, staring at the white ceiling. My phone alarm kept ringing beside me.
A dream.
I dug my nails into my arm until it hurt.
Definitely a dream.
No.
A nightmare.
I looked at the clock on my nightstand.
8:15 AM.
My first day of college.
I'm Alina, a first-year student at Sunrise University. It had always been just me and my mom. We only had each other.
I had always planned everything carefully.
I was never late.
But because of one stupid nightmare, I was already late on my first day.
“Alina, honey!” Mom called from the kitchen. “Come have breakfast before you go!”
“I’m up! Leaving in five!”
I jumped out of bed and almost tripped over my blanket.
I quickly changed, grabbed a piece of toast from the kitchen, and put on my sneakers without even tying the laces.
“Where's my ID card? Where did I put it?”
I searched through everything on my desk until I finally found it.
I grabbed my backpack and ran toward the door.
“Mom, I'm leaving!”
“Wait, have a proper—”
“No time! Love you, bye!”
I shut the door and ran down the steps.
I was already running down the street when my phone started vibrating in my pocket.
I pulled it out and answered.
“Misha?”
“Where on earth are you?” Misha sounded worried. “Class starts in two minutes! Everyone is already sitting down. And Alina—you will not believe who just walked in—”
“Tell me inside!” I gasped, still running. “I'm literally running through the courtyard!”
“Hurry up before the professor locks the door!”
The call ended.
I ran up the stairs of the main building two at a time and rushed through the hallway.
Room 204.
The door was slightly open.
I took a deep breath and slipped inside.
“Sorry I'm late, sir. May I come in?”
The professor barely looked at me before waving toward the back.
“Go find a seat quickly.”
“Thank you, sir.”
I turned toward the rows of desks.
Then I saw him.
My foot froze in mid-air.
I couldn't breathe.
From the middle row, a familiar voice broke through the quiet classroom.
“Are you serious? You really wanna break up?”
My heart stopped.
“But why?”
A cold shiver ran down my back.
“What will happen to me if you leave me?”
I slowly looked up.
My eyes locked onto the boy sitting a few rows away.
That voice.
That exact voice.
It was the voice from my nightmare.
No.
It couldn't be.
It's not him… is it?

a reality or a dream? 👀
