I. Shadows of the Cursed Prince
Shadows of the Cursed Prince
"A prince that was once turned to a 'Wicked' Phantom after being mistreated by his family!"
The grand hall of St. Nocturne's eastern wing was preserved like a museum to a lost youth---curtains drawn to block the oppressive moonlight, silver candlesticks tarnished black, and portraits of the royal bloodline shrouded in dust.
To the rest of the realm, Prince Dominic was merely a broken recluse who had fled his family's cruel betrayals years ago, only to return as an elusive, shadow-bound noble who refused to step into the sun. But the dark rumors surrounding St. Nocturne underestimated the true depth of his curse.
He wasn't merely hiding. He was barely tangible.
Dominic stood near the high arched balcony, staring down at his hands. Where flesh and blood should have met the cool night air, there was only shifting smoke and threads of restless twilight. The dark magic that have saved his life where he ran into the abyss had claimed his humanity in return, weaving his soul into a spectral, shadow-manipulating phantom.
By night, the agonizing transformation took hold, stripping away his warmth and leaving behind a creature built of gloom, vengeance, and solitary hunger.
A soft click of the heavy oak doors echoed through the silence, followed by the light, deliberate rustle of silk.
"You shouldn't be in this wing, Princess," Dominic's voice drifted through the room, sounding less like a man and more like the whisper of wind through empty corridors.
Princess Vivienne of Lustrouria paused, her hand lingering on the brass door handle. She had come to St. Nocturne under the guise of an envoy signing a crucial peace treaty, but the whispers of a phantom hunting in the palace shadows had drawn her deeper into the castle's secret passages.
"I was told the Prince of St. Nocturne spent his evenings here," Vivienne replied softly, taking a cautious step into the dim light.
"Yet I find only shadows."
"They are one and the same," he replied.
Dominic stepped out from the veil of darkness. As the dim candlelight caught his frame, Vivienne's breath caught in her throat. The figure before her was terrifyingly ethereal. His midnight-black cloak seemed to meld seamlessly into the floor, black mist curling from his shoulders like living smoke.
Yet beneath the sinister mask resting across his face, his glowing eyes burned with a raw, agonizing human intensity.
"You're... the phantom," she whispered, the realization settling into the quiet space between them.
"I am the monster your court warned you about," Dominic growled softly, a plume of shadowy dark threads threads expanding from his silhouette, rising up the stone walls in a menacing display intended to drive her away.
"Leave before the darkness decides you don't belong here."
Instead of retreating, Vivienne stepped forward. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble, refusing to succumb to the intimidation.
"They told me you were evil, Dominic. But a monster doesn't hide away in a locked wing, burdened by the ghosts of what his family did to him."
The mention of his past struck him deeper than any blade. The shadow mist flared, swirling violently around the room before surging toward her. In an instant, Dominic crossed the chamber with supernatural speed, closing the distance until he pinned her against the edge of the mahogany desk.
The sudden proximity sent a jolt of static through the air. Vivienne felt the icy, intoxicating chill of his spectral form pressing against her, yet where his hands gripped the wood beside her hips, she could feel the heat of a beating heart fighting through the gloom.
“You do not know what I am,” Dominic hissed, his face inches from hers, his voice thick with a dangerous mix of threat and restraint.
“Then show me,” Vivienne murmured, her gaze locking onto his masked eyes. Without breaking contact, she lifted a trembling hand and pressed her warm, bare palm against his chest—right over his cold, shadowy heart.
The touch sent a shiver through Dominic’s ethereal frame. The black mist clinging to his shoulders hesitated, recoiling from the radiant warmth of her skin. For the first time in years, the phantom’s cold grasp loosened, yielding to a fierce, unspoken hunger for the human connection he had been denied for so long.
