The Call That Wasn't His
She had always been insecure about the way she looked.
She constantly worried about what people thought of her, especially about her appearance. She never felt confident enough to believe that someone could genuinely like her.
Until one day, something happened that she never expected.
She met the most popular girl in college.
The girl smiled at her and casually said, “There’s a guy who has liked you since your second year of college.”
She stared at her in disbelief.
“Me?”
The girl nodded, then handed her a phone number.
“He’s too scared to tell you himself. So… call him.”
Her hands trembled as she took the number.
“He’s too scared to tell you himself. So… call him.”
Her hands trembled as she took the number.
She went home, sat on her bed, and stared at the screen for several minutes before finally gathering the courage to dial.
The call was answered on the first ring.
“Hello?”
Her heart started racing.
“Who is this?” she asked nervously.
The voice on the other side gave her a name.
The name of her crush.
She couldn't believe it.
She had liked him since high school, but she had always been too scared to confess her feelings.
That night, she told him everything.
And after that, they started talking every day.
She told him about the good things that happened to her, the bad things, the little things that nobody else cared about. Sometimes, she even told him about how her parents scolded her.
He always listened.
He never judged her.
Whenever she felt overwhelmed, he would calm her down and simply stay there for her.
For the first time, she felt like someone actually understood her.
Then one day, she called him while crying.
She had been hurt because people at college had been making fun of the way she looked.
“I feel so embarrassed,” she whispered through her tears.
He stayed silent for a moment.
Then she asked, “Can you meet me in person?”
He hesitated.
Instead of giving her the answer she wanted, he made an excuse.
His words hurt her more than she expected.
She wiped her tears and finally said,
“If you don't meet me on my graduation day, I'll stop talking to you.”
There was silence on the other end.
Then he finally replied,
“I'll come. But on one condition.”
“What?”
“No matter what happens, you have to hear me out.”
She agreed.
And then she started preparing for her graduation day.
The day finally arrived.
She looked for him everywhere.
Minutes turned into hours.
But he didn't come.
She tried not to lose hope.
Eventually, her name was called.
She walked onto the stage, collected her diploma, and heard a loud cheer from somewhere in the auditorium.
She looked down.
And froze.
The person standing there wasn't her crush.
It was the popular boy from her high school.
The boy she had known for years.
She hurried down from the stage, confused and upset.
Before she could say anything, he spoke.
“I liked you too.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“I've liked you since tenth grade.”
She couldn't speak.
He continued,
“The second year of college… that story was a lie.”
Her confusion only grew.
“I knew you were scared to confess your feelings, because I was scared too. So I planned everything.”
She stared at him.
“I was the one on the call.”
Her eyes widened.
“And that popular girl you met?”
He smiled.
“She’s my twin sister. She helped me.”
She should have been angry.
She should have walked away.
But instead, she smiled.
“I knew.”
Now it was his turn to look shocked.
“How?”
She laughed softly.
“Your sister told me the truth. On the day we decided to meet, she told me that the number she gave me was yours, not his.”
He looked at her, waiting for the rest.
“But I wasn't searching for him anymore.”
She smiled.
“I was searching for you.”
He remained silent.
She continued,
“Because for the last two months, it was you who listened to me. Not him.”
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Then they both laughed.
Together.
For the first time, she didn't feel insecure about the way she looked when she laughed.
Because, for the first time, she had someone who cared about her inner beauty, not her outer appearance.
And suddenly, she understood something.
Sometimes, the person you think you're looking for...
isn't the person who was really there for you all along.
