Chapter 1: The Girl Who Came Home
Chapter One — The Girl Who Came Home
Carrie Ingalls stepped off the stagecoach with a leather satchel, a stack of notebooks, and the unmistakable feeling that Walnut Grove had been waiting for her. The prairie wind tugged at her bonnet, carrying the scent of wheat and dust and memory.
She had left Walnut Grove as a girl. She returned as a woman with ink-stained fingers and a stubborn streak that had gotten her hired at The Walnut Grove Gazette—a newspaper that needed someone who could write more than crop prices and church announcements.
“Carrie Ingalls,” Mr. Hanson said, greeting her at the depot. “You’re just in time. Harriet Oleson’s already furious.”
Carrie blinked. “I haven’t even written anything yet.”
“That’s why she’s furious,” he said. “She heard you’re going to.”
Carrie smiled. She’d missed this place.
