Chapter 1
Emma’s P.O.V.
Today was gonna be a meteor shower! Noah and Jake helped me find the best spot to watch it. I really wanted to capture the meteor shower with my camera.
As I was setting up my camera stand to check the angle, Gia and Troy arrived.
“Hey! Em, what are you doing?” Gia asked, coming towards me.
“Hey, guys! Today, there’s gonna be a meteor shower. Noah and Jake are helping me find the best angle to capture it. So, prepare your wish lists!” I informed them.
“You believe in meteor shower wishes?” Noah asked.
Duh!
“Yes.” I nodded seriously.
“Then do you believe in Santa?” Jake teased me and earned a smack from Gia.
“Ow!”
Deserved.
“Did you make your list?” Troy asked me with a soft smile.
“Yes,” I said, showing it to them.
Was my list so long that all of them opened their eyes in shock?
“That’s a huge list,” Troy said.
“Whenever I saw a shooting star, my dad would tell me to make a wish. I’d get so excited that I’d forget what to wish for, so he told me to write them down,” I explained, telling them the story behind my wish list.
“You sure you didn’t forget anything?” Jake asked me.
“Just how many wishes do you want to make?” Gia asked.
“Eh, about 50?”
“Let me read what those 50 wishes are!” Jake said, taking my list.
Jake read my wishes aloud.
Emma’s Wish List 🌠
May my family always be happy and healthy.
May my friends always stay by my side.
May the world be free from pollution.
May every endangered animal find a safe home.
May I travel around the world someday.
May I see the Northern Lights.
May I learn to play another musical instrument.
May I never lose my love for nature.
May everyone find someone who truly understands them.
May Troy...
I quickly snatched my list back.
“Hey, let me finish reading!” Jake complained.
“That’s enough!” I said, hiding my list.
“So, guys, prepare your wishes!” I said and sat on the bench, pretending to write more wishes.
Thank God! I had snatched the list back before Jake could read that wish.
May Troy always be safe and happy.
May Troy like me a little.
I liked Troy. But I knew he didn’t like me back. Sad as it was, I hadn’t given up. It wasn’t like I’d ever confessed to him. I couldn’t dare to, to be honest. I was scared.
Why was I scared?
First, I was scared of being rejected by him.
Second, I didn’t want to risk our friendship.
Third, if he rejected me—which he would!—things would become awkward between us.
So, for now, I was stuck with my one-sided, unrequited love for him.
Robo Knight, who knew when, had come and was watching me silently.
“What’s wrong, Robo Knight?” I asked.
“What are you writing?” he asked me.
“Wishes,” I answered.
“What are wishes?” he asked me.
Mmm... How should I explain?
“Wishes are dreams. Dreams are hope. Without them, we humans can’t live,” I explained with a smile.
“I do not understand,” he replied.
“What are dreams? And what is hope?” he asked, raising more questions.
I blinked.
Oh.
Maybe that wasn’t the best explanation.
“Let me explain,” Troy said, stepping forward.
“Robo Knight, a dream is something we want to achieve. For example, our dream is to protect the Earth and make it a better place.”
Robo Knight nodded slightly, encouraging him to continue.
“A wish is something we want to happen. Like Emma wishing for a world free from pollution.”
“Correct,” I added with a nod.
“And hope?” Robo Knight asked Troy.
“Hope is believing that something good is possible, even when we don’t know what will happen,” Troy explained. “We hope that, by working together and trusting our team, we can defeat our enemies and protect the Earth.”
“So, a dream is something we want to achieve, a wish is something we want to happen, and hope is the belief that we can make a difference?” Robo Knight asked.
“Exactly!” Troy replied with a smile.
“Ohhh, now I understand!” I exclaimed.
Everyone turned to look at me.
“What?” I asked innocently.
“You’re the one who needed the explanation, Emma,” Jake pointed out.
“Hey! I knew that already!”
“Of course you did,” Gia said, giggling.
“Guys!”
They burst into laughter while I crossed my arms and pouted.
Honestly, why were my friends like this?
Later, on our way to Ernie’s Brainfreeze, our morphers alerted us to a monster attack.
Today’s monster was called Dream Snatcher. He ate people’s dreams and hopes.
How cruel!
As we were fighting, I didn’t realise how close he had come to me until he attacked. Before I knew it, I was down.
Troy’s P.O.V.
Being a Ranger came with big responsibilities. But it also gave me friends who were just like family. Hanging out with my Ranger friends was fun. Noah, the science genius, was a nice guy. Jake was fun. Gia was serious. And Emma was cute.
Ahem, I mean kind.
Get this straight in your head, Troy. Emma is a good friend. A friend.
I repeated it in my mind like a mantra.
Today, while I was hanging out with the others, Emma told us about the meteor shower that was going to happen tonight.
She told us to make lists of the wishes we wanted to make. Jake teased her, while Noah questioned the science behind it.
Seeing her enthusiasm, I asked her whether she had made her list. She showed us her super-long list, and Jake snatched it to read.
I’m sure I heard my name in her wish, but by then, Emma had taken her list back.
What had she wished for me? I was curious.
Knowing her, she had probably wished for my good health or something. Thinking about it, I smiled.
Haha, later, it was really funny seeing her confuse the meanings of dreams, wishes, and hope while trying to explain them to Robo Knight.
So, I helped her explain dreams, wishes, and hope to Robo Knight.
Whenever I explained the meaning of a word, she would nod like a bird and praise me for explaining it nicely.
God, she’s so goddamn cute.
How can she be so cute?
No, Troy. You can’t have feelings for her. You have to be the perfect leader.
I reminded myself as I dismissed any crush or romantic thoughts.
The day went by, and all was good. We were on our way to Ernie’s Brainfreeze when our morphers rang, alerting us to the monster attack.
All I remember is that we were fighting a monster who called himself Dream Snatcher and said he stole people’s dreams and ate them.
In the blink of an eye, that monster attacked Emma.
I saw Emma demorph and faint.
I was scared.
I ran towards her.
“Emma!” Gia screamed.
I tried shaking Emma, hoping she would wake up. It was futile.
“Emma!” I called her name.
“Emma, wake up!”
No response.
Suddenly, deep roots formed beneath her.
They were the roots of her dreams and wishes that the monster had stolen and eaten.
No. No. No. How could it be? How could anyone snatch my Emma’s dreams?
I was terrified.
I couldn’t stop the attack. I couldn’t protect her.
Robo Knight was about to cut the roots when Noah stopped him.
“You can’t, Robo Knight. It’ll hurt her. It’s the root of her dreams.”
“Emma, please wake up,” Gia cried.
“Emma, remember your dreams,” I told her.
“Remember your super-long list!” Jake told the unconscious Emma.
“You wanted to travel. See the Northern Lights,” I repeated the wishes I’d heard Jake read out earlier.
Maybe Emma heard us. Soon, the roots disappeared.
We looked at the other victims, but they still had roots. Only Emma’s roots were gone.
“How?” Gia wondered.
“She has 50 wishes to be fulfilled. You know Emma will never forget or lose her dreams. That’s the type of girl she is,” Jake answered.
Right. Emma was the type who strongly believed in her dreams.
We had to protect her and the people whose dreams were stolen.
“Robo Knight, stay here and protect Emma while we go defeat Dream Snatcher,” I commanded.
Thankfully, Emma saved the people with her optimism. She made them realise their dreams once again and thus became free from Dream Snatcher.
Emma told us to leave the fight to her and Robo Knight, and I let her.
Seeing her fight and knowing she was alright calmed me.
She’s okay now.
At the meteor shower, while she was fixing her camera on the stand, I stared at her.
I really could have lost her today. Emma, without her dreams, is not Emma. Emma is cheerful, optimistic, kind, and really, really good.
I looked at the meteor shower, which had already started.
Emma quickly sat beside me.
“Let’s wish for all the dreams and wishes we want to come true.”
I stared at her. She had her eyes fixed on the meteor shower. I looked at the shower.
If this really is real...
Then can I be greedy enough to ask for the safety of our planet and to have Emma’s heart?
