Summary

travel story following two families on a one-week journey across Nepal. Beginning in Kathmandu, the families immerse themselves in the rich culture of the valley—exploring the bustling streets of Thamel, the ancient stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, and the historic brick courtyards of Patan Durbar Square. The journey continues overland along the scenic Prithvi Highway and through the historic hill town of Bandipur before arriving in Pokhara. There, the story captures unforgettable moments of adventure and peace: rowing across Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple, watching the sunrise over the Annapurna range from Sarangkot, paragliding high above the valley, and exploring the depths of Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. The story concludes with a memorable return to Kathmandu, market shopping for local treasures, and a farewell cultural feast before heading home with lifelong memories of the Himalayas.

The Departure Horizon

The fluorescent hum of an international airport terminal at four in the morning has a distinct clarity. Rolling suitcases click rhythmically against tile floors, espresso machines hiss in the distance, and traveling groups sit under bright gate lights awaiting boarding. The transition from daily routine to international travel begins long before an aircraft leaves the tarmac; it starts in these quiet, expectant hours. Auditing passports, checking baggage weights, and navigating security lines form a familiar rhythm when traveling in a joint-family group. The shared excitement creates an underlying momentum that overrides sleep deprivation.

When the departure announcement finally echoes across the gate area, the walk down the jetway feels like stepping across a threshold into a different pace of life. Inside the cabin, the low hum of jet engines settles into a steady vibration. As the aircraft takes off and climbs through the early morning overcast, the urban grid below dissolves into a sea of clouds illuminated by gold and copper sunlight. Three hours into the flight, the terrain beneath changes dramatically. The flat plains give way to rolling green foothills, terraced farmlands clinging to steep slopes, and deep river gorges.

Through a break in the high haze, a jagged white line appears on the northern horizon—the high Himalayas, their snow-covered ridges piercing the sky well above the cloud layer. Landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu instantly introduces a change in atmosphere. The air carries the distinct scent of damp earth, woodsmoke, and dry spices. Stepping out of the arrivals terminal into the mountain breeze, yellow marigold garlands offer a warm, traditional welcome. The drive into Kathmandu exposes the vibrant energy of the valley: colorful motorbikes weave through narrow streets, fruit carts line the sidewalks, and ancient brick arches stand beside modern storefronts. The journey through the capital has begun.

UNDER HIS ROOF

Deborah Gabriella: The book has an unexpected plot twist, but no clues making you look forward to it. Making the story feel last minute and unplanned. The chemistry between the lead characters is shown extremely well. There's a good build up, in that regard. However with a bit more drama, maybe not between the couple ...
