Prologue
On a hot summer day in 1919, a small piece of fruit struck a young girl on the head. She reached up to rub the spot where it had hit her, smiling at the young man sitting beside her. He gazed into her beautiful brown eyes. He took her hand to help her up, returning her shy smile.
The two walked along the beach, their feet brushing against the soft sand.
“Catch me if you can!” she called out, running off in the opposite direction.
“Hey! Wait!” he shouted, chasing after her.
He caught her hand again to stop her, and they both burst out laughing. They sat down where the waves lapped at their feet. Breathless, his heart racing, he gradually stopped laughing and narrowed his eyes as he leaned closer to her. She leaned in too, closing her eyes, until their lips gently brushed against each other.
She pulled back slightly and let out a nervous giggle. He did the same.
“Come on, I have something to show you,” she said, glancing at him to signal that he should follow.
“Of course, Laia. I’m right behind you,” he replied, following her.
She led him to a large white house with blue windows, adorned with colorful flowers and hanging plants. Taking his hand, she led him up the stairs to her bedroom.
“Sit here,” she whispered, pointing to the bed as she rummaged through her belongings. At last, she found an envelope and turned toward him. He was already seated, holding a gift of his own.
“Oh... you...” she murmured, noticing the gift in his hands.
“Yeah, I...” he stammered, smiling nervously. “I bought it for you at one of the shops you showed me yesterday. Here. I thought you’d like it.”
“Thank you! I have something for you, too,” she said, handing him the letter as she accepted his gift.
She unwrapped it to reveal a beautiful photo album with a purple cover, decorated with delicate flowers just like the ones that adorned her home.
“It’s... it’s beautiful!” she exclaimed, smiling as she gazed into the boy’s hazel eyes. He was reading her letter, his expression filled with amazement.
“I knew you’d like it. And your letter... I love it!” he replied. “But I have one more surprise. Look under your blanket!”
“Let me see,” she said, lifting the blanket.
The moment she saw what lay beneath it, her eyes filled with emotion. A sparkle appeared in them, and a wide smile spread across her face.
“I’ll remember this summer forever.”
“Yes. This beautiful summer of 1919,” he replied with a smile.
