Chapter 1: THE STORY
Sometimes a normal day, a normal routine could be the beginning of a new chapter in our lives . An inevitable change that is brought about by our need for validation and constant attention from other people. Emily was about to find out how a simple post could change the turn of events for the next few months. She was about to board a ship that would capsize while she was in it and all she had was her identity. She was not ready for what would later become a lesson and a painful one at that. Maybe that was her fate or was it her wrong choices and naivety that made her dine ,hope and fall for this stranger who left as fast as he came , almost as though he never existed but no she had not imagined him, he was real and the pain was real.
Emily was the kind of girl who could spend an entire day at home and be perfectly happy about it. She was a pretty , petite 5''3 girl still learning the world and it's ways . She was quiet, shy, and a little introverted. A lover girl at heart, although she rarely admitted it out loud.
Most of her days were spent at home, working remotely in administration. Her laptop was usually on her lap most of the time or somewhere nearby, her phone always within reach, and her world comfortably contained within the walls of her home.
She didn’t have a huge circle of friends.
Jenny was one of the few people she was genuinely close to. They hung out often, talked about everything and anything , laughed about things that probably weren’t funny to anyone else, and occasionally convinced each other to leave the house when staying in became too comfortable.
Other than that, Emily kept to herself and she liked it that way.
She had been single for quite a while.
Long enough that being alone had become normal.
She wasn’t unhappy about it. She had learned to enjoy her own company. But somewhere underneath that independence was a soft, romantic part of her that still believed in love.
She wanted a connection.
The kind that made you look at your phone and smile for no reason.
The kind that made ordinary days feel a little less ordinary.
She just wasn’t actively looking for it.
Then one ordinary day, while scrolling through Instagram, Emily noticed that someone had liked her story.
A picture she had posted out of boredom and also because she thought it looked pretty.
She clicked on the profile.
And frowned.
There was almost nothing there.
No real photos. No obvious information. No clues about who this person actually was.
An empty profile.
Mysterious, she thought.
Then a message appeared.
“You look so beautiful.”
Emily looked at the screen for a moment before typing back.
“Thank you.”
The reply came quickly.
“I would like to get to know you. Can I have your number?”
Emily smiled to herself.
Straight to the point.
She looked at his empty profile again.
There was something slightly strange about giving her number to someone she knew almost nothing about.
But curiosity was already getting the better of her.
She typed:
“Okay, but you are mysterious.”
She gave him her number.
A few moments later, her phone buzzed.
“This is my number. You are so pretty. Send me more pictures.”
Emily smiled.
She sent him a few pictures.
He liked them and made sure she knew it.
There was something flattering about the attention. It was simple, but it felt good.
Emily wasn’t going to pretend she didn’t enjoy being admired.
Then she asked him for his pictures.
Tyler sent them.
She looked at them and immediately understood why he had been so confident.
He was good-looking.
Very good-looking.
He was 5''9 , a height which she considered perfect.
He was muscular, the type you knew spent a considerable amount of time in the gym and an equally considerable amount of time thinking about what he ate.
He seemed to command attention wherever he went , he looked like he could reach deep within one's soul .
From the pictures, she could tell there was an arrogance streak about him .
She told him.
And just like that, the conversation began to flow.
Late-night conversations that somehow turned into early-morning conversations.
They started with the easy things.
Hobbies.
Interests.
Likes and dislikes.
The little details people usually exchange when they’re getting to know each other.
Tyler told her that he was an Army veteran.
Emily asked questions.
He answered.
He had just the right answers , he seemed to know what to say , how to keep his image spectacular.
She shared things about herself too.
The conversation kept growing.
And somehow, without either of them announcing it, they stopped having a conversation and started having a constant connection.
They talked almost every minute of the day.
What are you eating?
What are you doing?
Where are you?
What do you like?
What don’t you like?
It was as if they were trying to learn everything about each other all at once.
In two days the conversations had already moved beyond texting.
There were phone calls.
And his voice…
His voice was deep, strong, almost commanding. It had a quality that made me pause the first time I heard it.
And unfortunately for Emily's sanity, it suited him.
Then video calls.
Emily would see his handsome face on her screen while they talked about absolutely everything and nothing.
They were getting to know each other’s habits, personalities, preferences, little quirks.
It was fast.
Maybe too fast.
But at the time, Emily didn’t think about that.
Somewhere between all that she stopped seeing him as a stranger.
She imagined what it would be like to have him beside her , she giggled at the thought of it.
She was enjoying it. Smiling at his messages as she analyzed them.
After being single for so long, there was something intoxicating about suddenly having someone who seemed interested in every little detail of her life.
Someone who gave her attention.
Her quiet days weren’t quite so quiet anymore.
Her phone was always lighting up.
And Tyler was becoming a part of her routine almost as quickly as he had appeared in her life.
Then, almost as quickly as the conversations had begun, Tyler started making his feelings clear.
From the very first day, he told her he was attracted to her.
He wanted every part of her .
He wanted her to be part of his life.
He wanted to know if she was single.
If she had other prospects.
Emily told him she was single.
His response wasn’t what she expected.
He claimed to be single too.
He told her this was the deepest connection he had ever experienced.
That he felt as though he had known her his entire life.
And somehow, Emily understood what he meant.
She felt it too.
There was an ease between them that made the short amount of time they’d known each other feel almost irrelevant.
They talked as though they were continuing a conversation that had started years ago.
It was strange.
It was exciting.
And it was moving incredibly fast.
By the fourth day, Tyler was already becoming possessive.
He wanted her to be his girl.
Then he said the words.
He had fallen in love with her.
Emily stared at her phone.
Love?
Already?
She couldn’t ignore how quickly everything was happening.
She questioned him about it.
It had only been a few days, they had not met yet .Technically she did not know this man.
Was he toying with her or was this real?
How could someone fall in love after only a few days?
Wasn’t this moving too fast or was she over thinking it?
Tyler reassured her. He was convincing , very convincing.
He told her that it didn’t matter whether it took days or months.
His feelings would remain the same.
He felt like he had known her for a lifetime.
He wasn’t going anywhere.
He sounded so sure .
Strange enough she agreed that she felt the same about him.
This man had managed to get into her mind and perhaps her heart which she had guarded so strongly.
And somehow, those feelings quieted the questions in her mind.
Maybe this was just different.
Maybe sometimes you really could meet someone and simply know.
Maybe all she needed was to allow herself to be loved and desired.
Maybe all the time people spent getting to know each other wasn’t always necessary.
Maybe, just maybe, she had finally found the connection she had been waiting for.
Emily didn’t know it yet, but she was standing at the beginning of something that would change her understanding of love, attachment, and herself.
At the time, though, she was simply a woman sitting at home, smiling at her phone because a mysterious man from Instagram had told her he had fallen in love with her.
And she believed him.
