Part 1
The scent of copper and expensive cologne always followed Spencer, a intoxicating blend that made Valentina’s pulse quicken before she even saw him emerge from the shadows.
To the rest of modern society, Spencer Vance was a brilliant, reclusive forensic sculptor—a man who used clay and skeletal remains to recreate the faces of the forgotten dead for the police department. But to Valentina Cruz, he was something entirely different. He was her perfect, devastating vice.
Valentina was a clean-up specialist. When the wealthy and powerful of the city made messily fatal mistakes, she was the one who arrived in the dead of night, dressed in sleek, form-fitting black silk, armed with industrial chemicals and a silent, seductive disposition to erase the evidence. They operated on opposite sides of the same grim coin: Valentina made people disappear; Spencer brought them back.
They met on a rain-slicked night in a high-rise penthouse, both called to a scene by a mutual, highly dangerous client who had panicked. While Valentina was smoothly wiping down a marble countertop, her movements slow and deliberate, Spencer was studying the angles of the victim's jawline with an eerie, sensual fascination.
"You missed a spot beneath the baseboard," Spencer had murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that brushed against the back of her neck like a velvet caress. "Capillary action forces blood into the porous wood. It will betray your beautiful work in three days."
Valentina hadn't flinched. She had slowly stood up, her dark eyes locking onto his sharp, aristocratic features, deliberately letting her gaze linger on his mouth. "And you're taking too long looking at a ghost. The police will be here in twenty minutes."
"I don't look at ghosts, Valentina," Spencer had replied, stepping into her personal space until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips. "I look at architecture. And your architecture is immaculate."
That was the night the dance began.
Their courtship was not built on flowers or candlelit dinners; it was forged in the intoxicating thrill of the city’s underbelly. They expressed their affection through a series of twisted, deeply intimate challenges. Spencer would leave microscopic clues at his official crime scenes—a specific knot, a trace element of a rare perfume—just to see if Valentina could deduce his presence. In return, Valentina would clean a scene so perfectly that Spencer, working for the police days later, would find absolutely nothing but a single, pristine white rose left in the drainpipe, smelling faintly of her skin.
It was a beautiful, lethal game of hide-and-seek. They loved each other because they were the only two people alive who truly understood how a touch could mean life or death.
Then, the game grew dangerously hot.
A ruthless syndicate leader discovered their connection. Seeking to eliminate Spencer’s forensic tracking and exploit Valentina’s cleaning network, he kidnapped Valentina, dragging her to an abandoned meatpacking plant on the edge of the docks.
When Spencer received the ransom note—a single polaroid of Valentina tied to a chair, her shirt slightly torn, looking entirely unbothered and intensely alluring—the clinical, detached artist vanished. The monstrous precision he usually reserved for his sculptures turned into a primal, protective fury.
He arrived at the meatpacking plant alone, carrying nothing but a leather briefcase of sculpting tools. The syndicate guards laughed when they saw the slender artist walk through the door.
The laughter didn't last.
Spencer didn't rely on brute force; he used speed, fluidity, and absolute precision. Moving through the dimly lit corridors like a phantom, he bypassed the perimeter security with quiet finality, his movements almost looking like a dark, elegant waltz.
When he finally kicked open the door to the back room, the syndicate leader panicked, pulling a silver pistol and aiming it directly at Valentina’s chest.
"One step, sculptor, and it's over," the man snarled.
Spencer stopped. His face was entirely expressionless, but his eyes were burning with a dark, possessive heat. He kept the leader's attention locked forward, refusing to back down, drawing the man's focus completely into his orbit.
The leader blinked, momentarily thrown by the artist's cold, alluring composure.
"You should have looked behind you," a voice whispered, smooth as aged whiskey.
The leader didn't even have time to turn. Valentina, who had silently picked the lock on her restraints minutes ago using a hairpin, slipped up behind him, her movements effortless. With a quick, practiced strike, she incapacitated him, sending him crashing heavily to the floor.
Valentina stood over the fallen man, her breathing even, her poise entirely intact. She slowly unbuttoned the top constraint of her leather gloves, looking up at Spencer with a fierce, dark warmth filling her eyes.
"You took your time," she noted, her voice dripping with playful malice.
"The traffic on the bridge was terrible," Spencer replied softly, his voice dropping an octave as he walked up to her. He didn't look at the chaos around them; he only looked at her. He took her face in his gloved hands, his thumbs tracing her cheekbones with absolute reverence before sliding down to her neck. "Are you alright, mi amor?"
"Always," Valentina whispered, leaning into his touch, her lips brushing against his palm.
She looked around the room, taking in the chaotic aftermath of the confrontation. A faint, teasing smile played on her lips as she ran a finger down Spencer’s lapel. "This is a terrible mess, Spencer. It will take hours to clean this place up properly."
Spencer wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, eliminating every inch of space between them. The cold, concrete backdrop of the warehouse faded away. "Then let me help you. Consider it a date."
The syndicate leader remained unconscious on the floor, completely ignored. In a world full of ordinary people, Valentina and Spencer had found a strange, seductive sanctuary in each other's darkness. Together, they prepared to clean the scene, ready to handle the situation just as they always did, one breathless, immaculate step at a time.
