CHAPTER 1: THE SHADOW WITHIN PART 1
The rain falling over the metropolitan area didn't cleanse the city; it only made the existing grime slicker, turning it into a surface that reflected the lights.
On the 14th floor of that luxury glass apartment complex, Unit 1402 was filled with artificial warmth. Soft jazz music played from a premium wireless speaker. David stood in the sleek, minimalist kitchen, casually pouring red wine into two crystal glasses. In the living room, Elena leaned back on the velvet sofa, her eyes glued to her smartphone, occasionally turning toward the kitchen to flash a fake smile.
To anyone looking from the outside, they appeared to be the perfect modern couple. But to the dark shadow watching them through a high-powered digital lens from the opposite building's rooftop, they just looked like living filth in this world.
The figure pulled its tactical black hood further down, adjusting it to fit perfectly over its face. Its breathing was slow and rhythmic; the freezing cold wind didn't affect it in the slightest. Having hacked the building's main breaker network, it was monitoring Unit 1402's digital grid on a tablet. It wasn't killing them for money. Nor was it killing out of anger. That shadow was waiting to destroy a fake life in this world. Lust without love. A lifeless relationship.
With a single swipe on the screen, the figure executed the command.
Snap.
The entire block plunged into pitch darkness. The jazz music stopped instantly. The hum of the refrigerator ceased, and a terrifying, heavy silence spread throughout the apartment.
"David? What happened to the power?" Elena's voice echoed in the dark, carrying more irritation than fear.
"Must be a grid failure because of the storm," David replied,
tapping his phone screen to turn on the flashlight. A small beam of white light sliced through the darkness of the kitchen. "Stay there. I'll check the breaker panel near the back entrance."
David stepped out of the kitchen, his phone light scanning the floor. He didn't hear the sound of the balcony glass door opening silently behind him. He didn't see the black figure blending into the darkness of the long hallway.
As David reached the utility closet near the back door, he felt the room's temperature drop significantly. He reached out to open the metal panel, but before his fingers could touch the latch, a large gloved hand from behind clamped tightly over his mouth, suffocating him.
An iron grip choked David's neck, yanking him backward with immense force.
David's phone slipped from his hand and fell to the hardwood floor with a clatter, its flashlight beam casting erratic shadows across the ceiling.
David struggled violently to escape; his elbow hit the kitchen counter hard, causing a ceramic vase to crash to the floor and shatter. Its pieces scattered around them. The black figure didn't flinch. Its grip was like a vice. Moving in a cold, calculated manner, the figure swung David around and slammed his spine brutally against the marble kitchen island.
Crack.
The sound of crunching bone echoed through the silent apartment. David gasped for air, his eyes widening in terror at the terrifying, unidentifiable black mask hovering just inches above his face. He tried to fight back, throwing a punch at the masked face, but the psycho casually caught the punch mid-air and twisted David's wrist until the joint popped.
"David?! What was that noise?!" Elena's voice called out from the living room, accompanied by the sound of her rapid footsteps. Her phone light's beam bounced off the hallway wall.
The figure didn't waste another second. Raising a large, blunt tactical weapon, it struck David's head with tremendous force. David's body went lifeless instantly, his head slumping to one side on the blood-spattered marble counter. The crimson wine he had been drinking mingled with the dark, thick blood oozing from his head.
When Elena entered the kitchen, her flashlight beam landed directly on the scene. The white light illuminated the masked figure standing over the motionless body of her partner.
She froze completely. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers and fell, angling upward to light the psycho from below like a monster in a horror film. She opened her mouth to scream, but the sound caught in her throat when the figure turned its dark, piercing gaze toward her.
The high-pitched ringing of Elena's fallen phone was the only sound echoing in the dark apartment. The screen glowed white on the hardwood floor, piercing the darkness and illuminating the expanding pool of blood around David's head.
Elena didn't look at the blood. Her eyes were fixated entirely on the black tactical hood of the figure standing over him. For a fraction of a second, the sheer unimaginability of the moment kept her rooted to the spot. Then, with a pure jolt of adrenaline, her survival instinct kicked in.
She turned and tried to run toward the front door, but the dark hallway betrayed her. Her foot caught the edge of a large ceramic planter. She stumbled and crashed hard into the drywall.
Before she could regain her balance, a cold rush of air hit her. The figure moved with terrifying, fluid speed. Before she could scream,
