The Storm and the Reality
The quiet in the living room felt heavier than any loud argument could have been. Sitting on the couch beside Malcolm, fifteen-year-old Ashley kept her eyes fixed on the coffee table. Her parents sat across from them, processing the news that Ashley was three months pregnant.
Ashley and Malcolm had been together for four years, navigating middle school dances, teenage milestones, and shared dreams. But this moment was entirely different. Her parents were hurt, shocked, and deeply anxious about what this meant for Ashley's future.
"You are going to finish school, Ashley," her father said, his tone firm despite the strain in his voice. "No matter how hard this gets, your education isn't something you can drop. We will support you, but you have to finish."
Her mother nodded, wiping away a tear. "It’s going to take discipline and sacrifice. From both of you."
Malcolm took a deep breath and spoke up, acknowledging the weight of the situation and promising to stand by Ashley every step of the way. When the meeting ended, Ashley walked up to her bedroom, her mind racing. Turning sixteen was supposed to be about driving permits and high school traditions; now, it was going to be about balancing doctor appointments, homework, and preparing to become a mother.
