The Milestone
The morning of Mallory’s eighteenth birthday started with the kind of crisp, golden sunlight that made everything feel cinematic. When she walked out onto the front porch, her parents were standing by the driveway, a massive red bow plastered across the windshield of a brand-new, charcoal-gray Jeep Wrangler.
Mallory gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. It was everything she had ever dreamed of—rugged, sleek, and entirely hers.
"Happy birthday, sweetheart," her dad said, handing her the keys with a proud grin. Her mom rushed in for a tight hug, whispering how proud they were of the young woman she was becoming.
By afternoon, Mallory’s backyard was buzzing with laughter, music, and the unmistakable scent of burgers on the grill. She had invited her closest high school friends—Maya, Chloe, and Sam—along with a few others from her track team. They spent the first couple of hours crowding around the Jeep, taking selfies in the driver's seat and blasting the newly synced Bluetooth speakers.
For Mallory, life felt golden. But high school dynamics are fragile things, and not everyone at the party was celebrating her joy.
