When the Stars Fall (Follow the Stars · Book One)

Summary

Princess Mei-Ling has three thousand years of royal manners, a white tiger who steals peaches, and a betrothal to a demon emperor she would rather die than marry. So she runs. Straight through a rune-door, out of the sky, and into a frozen northern forest, where the first person she meets holds a knife to her throat. General Aelric of the Wolf Legion is scarred, silver-haired and famously grim. He doesn’t smile, he doesn’t trust strangers, and he definitely doesn’t want a runaway princess and her sharp-tongued maid Jingfei turning his outpost upside down. Within weeks, Jingfei has taken over his kitchen, his second-in-command has fallen hopelessly in love with her, and Aelric is secretly arranging tea. But a war is coming to the north, the demon emperor has not stopped looking for his bride, and the stars that brought Mei-Ling here may be about to take her away.

Prologue

Long before empires rose and fell, before names held power and kings crowned themselves divine, there lived an ancient spirit at the edge of all things. She was neither born nor summoned. She was twilight given form, and only the world itself knew her true name.

Those who came later called her Novera, the Guardian of Crossings.

In the age before memory, the realms were one. Two sister worlds lay entwined by sky and spirit, like the two halves of a split peach still clinging to the same stone.

In the East lay Shenzhouya, the Graceful Divine Land. Its mountains floated on rivers of cloud. Its seas were ruled by four Dragon Kings in palaces of pearl, and above it all the Jade Heavens kept their endless ledgers of fate. There, incense curled from ten thousand shrines, and every hill, river and kitchen hearth had a god of its own who expected to be thanked.

In the North lay Zvjezdano Nórland, the Celestial Northlands. It was a country of pine and frost and starlight, where the sky burned green on winter nights and ravens carried the words of the gods. There, the old powers carved their laws in runes, and the norns sat at the roots of the world, spinning the threads of every life.

Between them grew the Great Tree.

The East called it Fusang, the tree where the tired suns came down to rest. The North called it the Ash of the Worlds. Its roots drank from wells older than gods, and its branches held both skies at once. For an age, the two realms sang in harmony. Spirits and elves, immortals and dwarves crossed freely along its boughs, trading silk for amber and songs for stories.

But peace withers quickly in the hands of pride.

When the old gods fell and mortals rose, envy poisoned unity. Sorcerers sought dominion over death. Kings made pacts with monsters. Demon lords in the East and frost-giants in the North each claimed the Tree as their own, and in the war that followed, its branches twisted and the bridge between the realms cracked. The worlds split like shattered glass, and each forgot the other had ever existed.

Only Novera remembered.

From the dying bark of the Tree she carved three runes. Each was etched with a sliver of untamed magic and the echo of a choice. They were not weapons of conquest. They were seeds of defiance, a way for the lost, the broken and the bound to cross what should no longer be crossed.

“One will rest in the ocean’s bones,” she whispered, “one in the heart of ice, and one beneath a lotus bloom. They are not keys. They are invitations.”

With the last breath of her fading form, she gave a warning.

“Whoever dares to wield a rune does not escape fate. They awaken it.”

Then she was gone, scattered into stardust and memory.

Or so the world believed.

But a spirit who has guarded every crossing does not simply end. She only crosses again. Novera’s stardust drifted down through the ages like seeds on the wind, and wherever it settled, something was born. A fox in the high snows. A fisherwoman on a grey northern shore. A healer. A wanderer. A star. Life after life, she lived and loved and died and forgot, and lived again, learning what it was to be small, and mortal, and afraid, and brave.

And always, without knowing why, she found herself drawn back toward the places where the runes were sleeping.

The runes remained, waiting for someone bold enough to use them.

Waiting, perhaps, for her.
