Summary

Zarak Safi is twelve when insurgents burn his father's school and his home in Darband, a village on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Hidden in a cellar with his five-year-old brother, he survives the night that kills everyone else he loves. Six years later he has carried smuggled goods over the deadly passes, taught himself English from a scorched dictionary, and watched his best friend drift toward the man who destroyed his family. Then he saves an American convoy, and a U.S. captain hands him an offer that could change everything: a chance to join the U.S. Army. But in the Kunar mountains, every choice has a price. And the mountains don't forgive. A coming-of-age war drama about brotherhood, grief, courage, and hope.ice has a A coming-of-age war drama about brotherhood, grief, courage, and hope.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and events are either the product of the author's imagination or used fictitiously. Although the story is set against the real backdrop of Afghanistan's Kunar border region, the village of Darband, its people, and every character in these pages are invented. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or to actual events is purely coincidental.

Content note: this story contains war violence, the death of family members, grief, armed conflict, and references to child labor and smuggling. Reader discretion is advised.

lblomme: I always love a story where good overcomes evil. The sad start, the growth, and ultimate strength of the main character was well done. The story never lagged and ultimately delivered a happy ending even for characters who were less than stellar. Well done!
